LIFE - DEATH - RESURRECTION--- REVELATION 14: 11?

Revelation 14:11?

Will sinners live in a painful hell-fire for eternity?

                                                by

                                         Keith Hunt

The subject of DEATH, natural immortality of the Soul, the
RESURRECTION, and the reward of the wicked (do they burn in a
hell-fire for ever?), has been covered by the late Dr. Basil
Atkinson, and by myself, in numerous studies on this Website (see
under "Death, then what?" - "Enoch, Moses and Elijah" - "Mansions
in the Sky?" - "Will we get to heaven?").

There is one other passage, that gives people trouble, and
that is Revelation 14:9-11. It has not been covered in-depth, so
I want to try and do that in this study. But first there are
important Bible study principles we must understand.

     1. There are passages in the Bible that are indeed hard to
understand. The apostle Peter acknowledge such was the case in
referring to the apostle Paul's writings. "And account that the
longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved
brother Paul also according to the wisdom given him has written
unto you. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these
things; in which ARE SOME THINGS HARD TO UNDERSTAND, which they
that are unlearned and unstable, wrest, as they do also the
other scriptures, unto their own destruction" (2 Peter 3: 15-16).

God has at times, inspired some passage of Scripture to be
"hard to understand" on the surface, or putting it another way,
seemingly to contradict many plain easy to understand passage and
verses of the Bible.

     2. People "unlearned" as Peter said, do often west or
misunderstand these hard to understand passage, to their own hurt
and even destruction. I do not think Peter had in mind here, when
he said "unlearned," those who did not have "theological degrees"
or theological training in some established Theology school,
after all Peter himself had none of that, for he was a fisherman
by trade. No, I think Peter meant by using the word "unlearned"
as those who had not studied the Bible from cover to cover,
reading it all, and able to rightly put together ALL passages and
verses on a particular subject, knowing that you understand the
hard verses in the light of the easy plain verses, not the other
way around. And that there cannot be any contradictions in God's
word, although there may seem to be some.

     3. On just about all Bible subjects there are plain easy to
understand verses on that particular subject. Those verses should
be taken first and THEN the hard verses SECOND. When we do this,
in that order, we can usually come to understand and interpret
the hard verses.

     4. It is important to remember that the original Old
Testament and the original New Testament of Hebrew and Greek (the
old being written in Hebrew and the New written in Greek) did NOT
have punctuation of sentences and paragraphs.

     5. It is important to have in mind some of the keys to be
able to understand some of the passages in the prophetic books,
like Revelation. I have covered the basics of those in another
study called "Points on Prophecy" which I ask the reading to
study. It is under the heading "Prophecy" on this Website.

     6. The Bible does use "figures of speech" at times. So much
so, that Dr. Bullinger thought it necessary to write a one
thousand plus page book on the subject of "Figures of Speech in
the Bible."

Now, with the above in mind and in hand, I think we can come
to understand Revelation 14: 9-11.

We enter by knowing that the Bible has many clear, plain,
easy to read verses, that show us that mankind was not ever given
a natural immortal soul, that death is death, not life, and that
people do NOT continue to think, speak, and walk around a heaven,
if they have been "good Christians" nor do they burn forever with
moans of pain in some fire that never burns them up, if they died
being "unsaved."
These verses then in Revelation 14: 9-11 do NOT contradict
the rest of the Bible passages on this subject of natural
immortality and hell-fire.

The context of Revelation 14 9-11 is NEAR the very end of
this age, when the end-time Babylon will come crashing down. It
is very near the time when the Son of man comes in a cloud with a
crown on His head, to reap the harvest of human lives (verses
14-20). We see that those who worship the beast and his image
shall "drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out
without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and shall be
tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy
angels, and in the presence of the Lamb" (verse 10.

This ties in with 2 Thessalonians chapter one. "And to you
who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be
REVEALED from heaven with His mighty angels. In flaming FIRE,
taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who shall be punished with
everlasting destruction (the destruction is everlasting or as the
Greek can be read, "age-lasting" destruction - the 1,000 year age
that is now going to commence with Jesus' coming in powerful
glory) from the glory and power. When (the time frame) He shall
COME to be glorified in His saints (when the saints will be
resurrected to glory in the resurrection at Jesus' return) and to
be admired in all them that believe...in THAT day" (verses 7-10).

Yes, Jesus shall come with angels, on a cloud, to punish
many wicked and to raise the dead saints and glorify them. All
this I have covered in detail in many other studies.
This passage in 2 Thessalonians is the same time as that in
Revelation 14: 9-11.

Jesus will use some kind of fire power to torment and
destroy His enemies. If fire is thrown at you, and you are on
fire, it is indeed torment and pain until you are dead.

So far, nothing too unusual here. The enemies of Jesus, will
upon His return, be put to death in the torment of fire and
brimstone. Their death will not be some painless "lethal
injection" of a drug that puts you to death quietly and
painlessly, but the death of Jesus' enemies at His coming will be
fire-fully horrific, and be torment until they are dead from the
fire and brimstone.

Then we have the words in verse 11, "And the SMOKE of their
torment ascends up for ever and ever...."

Notice, it does NOT say, "And they were living for ever and
ever in painful torment" or "And they lived forever in the fire,
with painful suffering."
It is the SMOKE of their TORMENT, yes the end result of the
fire and brimstone that will kill them, put them to death (and we
have seen in the many other studies on this Website exactly what
death IS), is that they will die, and the atom particles of the
smoke of the fire that burns up those physical humans, will in
one sense, go up floating around for ever, or as the Greek reads,
"the ages of the ages."
When do atoms, that you can no longer see with the human
eye, of burned things that fire consumes, ever not be atoms?
Then, the phrase "the ages of ages" in this context (it is
used of God Himself in chapter 5: 14, and that context is
obviously meaning "eternity" as God is and will live for
eternity) may well be a figure of speech used by the inspired
writer, John the apostle, to tell us that their destruction by
fire and brimstone, is very permanent, for the conditions
of their death at this time. Sometimes in the Old Testament, the
word "forever" in regards to some things was "forever, within the
limit of conditions." The reader can look at the word "forever"
in Strong's Concordance, and see that sometimes as used in the
OT, it was forever within conditions, and did not mean for
eternity.

Here I think John has ended his thought on the enemies of
God, which he started back in verse 9. He has finished his
telling us that those enemies of God who worship the beast and
his image, and who are living right up to the very coming of
Jesus in a cloud, with the angels, will be killed with fire and
brimstone and will be burned up as that is what physical fire
does, it burns things up, and the smoke ascends, the atoms of
fire and smoke eventually become invisible to the human eye, but
they are still up there, for all practical purposes (maybe no
practical purpose) for ever so to speak. For again I say,
when does physical atoms of anything physical give up being
physical atoms. I think only if God tells the physical to not be
physical and to not exist as physical any longer. Remember it is
written that God created all the physical and none physical
(spirit creatures etc.) of the whole universe from that which did
not exist (Colossians 1: 15-17).

I believe this is where we should have a full stop. After
the words "for ever and ever."
Then John goes back to another thought and to another time
period. The time period is when those enemies of God are fully
worshipping the beast and its image. They are living their
physical lives under the beast and its image. They have decided
to follow and live as the beast and its image tell them. They are
in a "big brother is watching you" life and society. Think what
it will one day be like to have the beast power and its image
ruling over millions of people. A dictatorship, a power that
governs your every move, how you must think, how you must act,
how you must live your life 24 hours a day. It matters
not whether it is day or night, if you are awake, if you are
doing anything while not sleeping, you must be governed by this
beast and its image power. Step out of line with its teachings,
orders, wishes, governance, and you are heading for such trouble
that such actions could cost you your life. The book of
Revelation tells us that many true Christians will indeed die
under the end-time Babylon beast and its image, when it rules
many nations.
Those who live under its power will have to watch their
every step, even their words of speech, certainly how they act in
their work time and in their leisure time. It will indeed be the
time when the all seeing eye of the Babylon beast will be
monitoring every person alive under its rulership. Such a way of
life for those under the beast and its image can hardly be said
to be "rest." God through the apostle John, said such people
living and worshipping the beast and its image will have "no rest
day or night."
This has nothing to do with after they are dead. It has
nothing to do with them having a natural immortal soul, that will
be punished forever in some fire that gives them pain but never
burns them up. It has all to do with when they are living their
physical life under the dictatorship of the Babylon beast power.
Truly they will have no peace of mind, they will have no mental
rest, no emotional rest, they will be in constant mental turmoil
knowing they are being watched in everything they say and do, at
night time or in the day time.
Christians will have peace of mind, they will have rest in
mind, for although they may be put to death for NOT worshipping
the beast and its image, they know they are one with God the
Father and Jesus Christ. Those who will keep the commandments of
God and have the faith of Jesus, may die under the beast
government but they will have "rest" both in their minds and in
the grave, until Jesus returns to raise them from the dead
into glorified life (Rev. 14:12,13; 11:15-19).

I see this passage of Scripture in Revelation 14 being
divided into two sections, two thoughts if you will. The first
starts with verse 9 and ends with "for ever and ever" in verse
11, and there we should put a full stop. It is the thought and
the teaching of what will happen to those who worship the beast
and its image, and who are alive at the coming of Jesus in power
and glory. They will be killed in a death of fire and brimstone.
Then the second thought and teaching begins in verse 11 with
"And they had no rest." This thought is concerning "rest" of the
peace of mind. Those worshipping the beast and its image will
have no rest of mind when awake either night or day, while those
who serve God and keep His commandments and have Jesus' faith,
will have rest in peace of mind, even if they rest in the sleep
of death from the persecution of the beast power.

This section of inspired Scripture does not in any way
contradict all the plain easy to understand passages of Scripture
that tell us that man does not have a natural immortal soul, that
if a person dies being a sinner and unsaved, that they will burn
in a hell-fire that will give them physical pain for all
eternity.

God is a kind and merciful God. If someone does not want to
be "saved" into His Kingdom and eternal life, then they will one
day be burnt up and be ashes under the feet of the righteous.
They will die and will never exist again, their punishment for
turning down God's gift of salvation through Jesus Christ will be
that they die and do not exist in any way, shape, or form, with
no thoughts, mind....just simply not existing. For those
accepting Jesus as their savior and serving God, there will be
GLORIFIED LIFE that can hardly be imagined, so great and so
wonderful will it be for all eternity.

OTHERS BESIDES THE TWELVE

LAZARUS

Dr.Trever has furnished in ISBE a thorough biography of St.
Lazarus up to the time following his being raised from the dead:

"LAZARUS, laz'a-rus (Lazaros, an abridged form of the Hebrew
name Eleazar, with a Greek termination): Means 'God has helped.'
In the Septuagint and Josephus are found the forms Eleazar, and
Eleazaros. The name was common among the Jews, and is given to
two men in the New Testament who have nothing to do with each
other.
"The home of the Lazarus mentioned in John 11:1 was Bethany. He
was the brother of Martha and Mary (John 11:1,2; see also Luke
10:38-41). All three were especially beloved by Jesus (John
11:5), and at their home He more than once, and probably often,
was entertained (Luke 10:38-41; John 11).
"As intimated by the number of condoling friends from the city,
and perhaps from the costly ointment used by Mary, the family was
probably well-to-do. In the absence of Jesus, Lazarus was taken
sick, died and was buried, but, after having lain in the grave
four days, was brought back to life by the Saviour (John
11:3.14.17.43.44). As a result many Jews believed on Jesus, but
others went and told the Pharisees, and a council was therefore
called to hasten the decree of the Master's death (John
11:45-53).
"Later, six days before the Passover, at a feast in some home in
Bethany where Martha served, Lazarus sat at a table as one of the
guests, when his sister Mary anointed the feet of Jesus (John
12:1-3). Many of the common people came thither, not only to see
Jesus, but also the risen Lazarus, believed in Jesus, and were
enthusiastic in witnessing for Him during the triumphal entry,
and attracted others from the city to meet Him. (John
12:9.11.17.18) ("The Intertional Standard Bible Encyclopaedia,"
G. H. Trever, p.1860)

THE LATER LIFE OF L ZARUS

On the island of Cyprus there is a very firm and ancient
tradition that Lazarus fled from Jerusalem about the year 60 A.D.
It would seem that this is an unnecessarily late date
although we have little more than tradition to go on in
determining it.
A pamphlet published by The Church of St.Lazarus in Larnaca,
Cyprus, written by A.Patsides, records the local tradition:

"We do not know the names of his parents, because the Holy
Scriptures mention nothing on this point. The only thing we know
from them is that Lazarus had two sisters, Martha and Mary. Our
Lord visited many times their home in Bethany and it is known
that true friendship existed between him and his family. The
feelings of Christ towards Lazarus are described in the Gospel of
John, where we learn that, when our Lord was informed about his
illness and the death of his friend, He hastened to Bethany and
raised Lazarus from death, giving by this action joy to the
unfortunate sisters, who received such a severe blow by the death
of their brother.
"On account of this incident the Jews searched for Lazarus in
order to kill him, because many people believed in Christ.
Lazarus, to avoid their revenge, was compelled to visit Cyprus
and Citiurn about 60 or 63 A.D., according to an old tradition,
which can be relied upon.
"In Citium, Lazarus became the spiritual leader of the town,
where he was bishop for thirty years. According to the same
tradition Lazarus died in Citium, where his tomb is preserved up
to the present day.
"When Leo the Wise was emperor of Byzantine, the dead body of St.
Lazarus was found and carried to Constantinople (890 A.D.)."
("St.Lazarus and His Church in Larnaca," Ch.A.Patsides, p.2)
A guidebook about Cyprus, by Robin Parker, which is both
well written and comprehensive, affirms: "According to tradition
St.Lazarus, after he was raised from the dead by Christ, came to
Cyprus where he became the first bishop of the See of Kitium. The
empty tomb, in which the relics of the saint were covered, has
been preserved and may be seen in the floor of the bema."
("Aphrodite's Realm," Robin Parker, p.108 )
When the author visited the tomb of Lazarus in Cyprus, the
Greek priest there explained that the body of Lazarus had
sometime in the past been moved to Marseilles in France. He did
not seem to know the details nor the date. It is probable, as
Patsides said, that the bones of Lazarus were indeed removed from
Constantinople in the 9th century and taken to Marseilles. The
relics have since disappeared from Marseilles, but there is some
documentation that at one time they were there.
So firm indeed is the tradition that it opens a question as
to whether Lazarus might not have traveled from Cyprus to
Marseilles and have ministered there? This is not to say he could
not also have eventually returned to Cyprus and died there, but
there is more than a little indication that Lazarus spent some
time preaching in Marseilles. Knowing the typical moving about of
those who lived in the Apostolic Age, one can scarcely raise a
serious objection to Lazarus having ministered in Cyprus, as did
Paul and Barnabas, and then having gone on to Marseilles. But, it
is also not impossible that he may have returned to Cyprus to
retirement and death.
Later his bones were most surely removed to Constantinople,
and still later returned, not to Cyprus but to Marseilles, with
which he had an early association. J.W.Taylor, who is a
fascinating writer, describes the story of Lazarus in Marseilles
as follows:

"If you land at Marseilles and go by the Quai de Ia Joliette to
the bottom of the Rue do la Cannaiere, and then take any of the
lower turnings on the right, you will find that you are skirting
the older quay of Marseilles, and that as you bear again to the
right and follow the Rue Saints at some little height above the
sea, directly in front of you, on an eminence, is the old church
of St.Victor.
"It has rather the appearance of some old dungeon or fortress
than that of a church, but the church you enter is only of
secondary importance. It conceals something far more interesting
underneath it. A door on the south side of the nave leads down to
a subterranean church, large and lofty, which dates from the
fourth Century. This was built by the Cassianite monks, and from
its position has been untouched and could not well be destroyed
through all the centuries since.
"All this vast fourth-century church has been visibly built
around a still older natural cave or grotto known as the original
first-century church or refuge of St.Lazarus.
"Near the entrance to this is a carving of vine-leaves dating
from the fourth century, and grouped near are old chapels
dedicated to St. ssian, St.Victor and other saints. The bodies of
the saints, however, have been removed. Two sarcophagi stones,
said to date from the second century, were too solid to be rifled
of their contents and still remain.
"The great height of this underground abbey church, its darkness,
its stillness, the few scattered but perfect round pillars
supporting the roof, and the first-centiury chapel which is
enshrined by it, all combine to produce a picture of early
Christian life and architecture, striking and irresistible.
"No explanation that I know of has been, or can be, offered other
than that offered by tradition - that here was the place where
Lazarus of Bethany lived preached and ministered and died, and
that therefore within some two hundred or three hundred years
afterwards this church was built in honour of his menory and to
enshrine his body which was then present here.
"And all through the ages ever since this faith has been firmly
held, and lives as strong today as ever. If we come back from the
crypt or subterranean church into the (upper) church of St.
Victor, at the west end of the nave, under the organ-loft, we
find a life-sized statue of St.Lazarus, his left hand holding
the crosier, his face upturned to heaven, and underneath the
statue two pieces of stone removed from the old sepulchre at
Bethany out of which our Saviour raised him." ("The Coming of the
Saints," J.W.Taylor, p.188-189)

"Some further reference may be needed to St.Lazarus and to
Restitutus - the man born blind, of St.John's Gospel (John 9).
There was at one time (as we are told by Rabanus) a Life of St.
Lazarus very analogous to that of St.Mary and St.Martha, but
no complete copy of it exists, some fragments only of his "Life"
(which were formerly incorporated in the Office for St.
Lazarus' Day at Marseilles and Autun) Wing been preserved.
"These appear to have been taken from a "Life" which, was written
by the monks of the Abbey at Bethany, a church and monastery
having been erected at Bethany before the ravages of the
Saracens, to guard the tomb from which our Lord was said to have
raised St.Lazarus.
"The extracts, according to Faillon ("Monuments Inedits," vol.
ii, p.114, etc.), read as follows:

"'Tradition states flat St.Lazarus, after the ascension of Jesus
Christ, remained for a time in the company of the Apostles, with
whom he took charge of the Church which was at Jerusalem. After
this he went to the Island of Cyprus in order to escape from the
persecution which arose about Stephen. [This would indicate an
earlier date for Lazarus having come to Cyprus than A.D.60. -
ED.]
"'Having filled there for several years the office of a
missionary priest, he entered into a ship, and traversing the
sea, by the grace of God arrived at Marseilles, the most
celebrated town of Provence. Here, exercising the functions of
his priesthood, he served God, to whom he had entirely
consecrated his life, in righteousness and true holiness. He
preached the work of Life to those who had not yet received it,
and gained many converts to Jesus Christ ... We, who occupy his
old house at Bethany--that is to say, his former tomb - and
perform our religious duties at the place of his first
interment, humbly pray to Jesus Christ, by the merit of St.
Lazarus, our patron and His own especial friend, that He would
deign to lead us by His goodness, so that we may rejoice in His
help during this present life and be associated with Him in the
joys of eternal life hereafter.'" (Ibid., p.121-22)
"There is no doubt that this tradition, much as it is given in
the Life of Rabanus, was accepted by the whole Latin Church for
over a thousand years. For proof of this we have only to turn to
the Breviary of St.Martha's Day, July 29th. There we find a
lection for the second nocturne which tells how Mary, Martha and
Lazarus, with their servant Marcella, and Maximin, one of the
seventy-two disciples, were seized by the Jews, placed in a boat
without sails or oars, and carried safely to the port of
Marseilles. Moved by this remarkable fact, the people of the
neighbouring lands were speedily converted to Christianity;
Lazarus became bishop of Marseilles, Maziminus of Aix, Mary lived
and died an anchoress on a high mountain of those parts, while
Martha founded a convent of women, died on the fourth day before
the kalends of August, and was buried with great honour at Tara-
scon. [The date of this tradition is not the first or second
century since a reference to an elder as a "priest", or to Mary
as an "Anchoress" is at the earliest, 3rd century. - ED.]
"The oratory and cathedral at Arles (1152), which commemorates
St.Trophimus - the Church of St.Martha at Tarascon (1187-1192),
and the crypt of the old Abbey of St.Victor at Marseilles,
dating from the fourth century, which forms a lasting memorial to
St.Lazarus, all hear witness to the faith and devotion of those
who built them. (Ibid., p.106-107)

"Roger de Hovedon (730-1200) in his third volume dealing with
events which happened between 1170 and 1192, gives a good
description of Marseilles, and writes:

"'Marseilles is an episcopal city under the dominion of the King
of Arragon. Here are the relics of St.Lazarus, the brother of
St.Mary Magdalene and Martha, who held the bishopric here for
seven years after Jesus had restored him from the dead.' ("Roger
de Hovedon," edited by W.Stubbs:, Longmans, 1868, vol. iii, p.
51)
"Another is from old Church literature. In 1040, in the bull of
Benedict IX (relative to the establishment of the Abbey of St.
Victor, at Marseilles, after the expulsion of the Saracens), we
find the history of the foundation of the Abbey of St.Victor in
the time of the Emperor Antonine, of its building by St.Cassien,
and of its enshrining the sufferings and relies of St.Victor, his
companions, Hermes and Adrian, and St.Lazarus, who was restored
from the dead by Jesus Christ.'" (Ibid., p.108)

"The ancient church records and Lyons confirm the same facts:

"'Lazarus returned to Gaul from Britain to Marseilles, taking
with him Mary Magdalene and Martha. He was the first appointed
Bishop. He died there seven years later.'
"He was the first Bishop of Marseilles and built the first
church, on the site where the present cathedral stands. In the
few years, he lived to teach at Marseilles he founded other
churches. His zealous preaching and kindly disposition left a
deep impress in Gaul, to such an extent that he is better
remembered in France than is Philip, regardless of the
latter's long sojourn in Gaul. In many quarters he is regarded as
the Apostle of Gaul and his relics are greatly treasured to this
day. At Marseilles, Lyons, Aix, St.Maximin, La Sainte Baume and
other places there still remain numerous monuments, liturgries,
relies and traditions to his immortal memory. He was the first of
the original Bethany band associated with Joseph to die. As the
records state, he died a natural death seven years after
returning to Marseilles ... which would place the date of his
death between A.D.44 and 45." ("The Drama of the Lost Disciples,'
George F. Jowett, p.163,164)

The dates suggested above are not compatible with the other
traditions, which have greater acceptance among students of
tradition.
The information furnished by Taylor and Jowett is not
generally accepted by church historians but since it contains
some valuable documentation not to be easily found elsewhere, the
above is quoted for what it may be worth.
Whatever else may be true, the very least of what may be
said about Lazarus is that he is firmly associated with both
Cyprus and Marseilles, France.

GOD'S DIET LAWS #12--- ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

Protein and 7 Points for Health

Answers to some questions

The following is taken from an old book (published in 1971), yet
still indeed very up to date for the most part. The author Paavo
Airola, Ph.D., N.D. was at the time a world-famous Nutritionist.

He lays out the IDEAL way to eat, which for a lot of us would be
hard to follow, but many things we can do IF we take a little
time and effort.

the book the following is taken from is called "ARE YOU
CONFUSED?"

QUOTE:

High or Low Protein Diet Which Is Better ?

This is the most controversial question among American health
authorities and health-conscious people. No other issue of
nutrition is affected more by personal likes and habits than the
issue of animal proteins. Many of America's most respected health
writers have recommended a high-protein diet as a must for
optimum health. During my lectures the question of proteins
brings the most heated arguments.
A high protein requirement is the absolute must of any
"respectable" American health system. We are so brainwashed by
this "high protein-low carbohydrate" myth that even a mere
suggestion of possible erroneousness of this premise would
jeopardize one's credibility. Yet, practically all of Who's Who
in the European health field are unanimous in their endorsement
of a low protein diet, particularly low animal protein diet, as
the diet most conducive to good health and long life. The
empirical evidence in support of the low protein diet is equally
impressive.

HIGH OR LOW PROTEIN DIET - WHICH IS BETTER?

Why the high-protein craze?
The scientific fact that your body is made mostly of proteins may
be largely responsible for the high-protein myth. It is true, of
course, that proteins are vital nutritive elements and are
absolutely necessary in your nutrition. But the present
recommendation of "lots" of protein in the diet is based on
antiquated research of the 19th century. Most of the advocates of
the high-protein diet repeat in a parrot-like fashion the
erroneous conclusions made by the 19th century German researchers
Von Liebig, Von Voit, and Max Rubner. These scientists came to
the conclusion that man's minimum daily requirement of protein
was 120 grams. Although these conclusions were based on very
primitive and unscientifically conducted research - where, for
example, no distinction was made between animal and vegetable
protein, or between raw and cooked protein - much of today's
argument for a high protein intake is based on the calculations
of these German scientists. Nutrition courses in our universities
and medical schools today are teaching the protein requirement
tables made by these 19th century men. This in spite of the fact
that the latest research from various parts of the world shows
that our actual protein need is far below that which it was
previously believed to be.
Of course, the commercial motive even here has played a decisive
role in building up the high-protein cult. There are huge
economic interests - the multibillion dollar livestock, dairy and
meat-packing industry - involved in promoting the high-protein
diet. These industries sponsor most of the protein research. And
through the powerful advertising in every media, including the
"Beef for Health" stickers on automobile bumpers, they see to it
that you never forget that you need "lots of protein" for health.
We have been brainwashed by the high protein propaganda from
every possible direction for half a century.
How much protein do you actually need?
During the last few decades, a growing number of independent
researchers have been showing that our present beliefs in

ARE YOU CONFUSED?

regard to protein are outdated and that the actual daily need for
protein in human nutrition is far below that which has long been
considered necessary.
World-famous Swedish nutritionist, Dr. Ragnar Berg, whose works
on nutrition are used as text books in many medical schools, made
an extensive research on protein and concluded that 30 grams of
protein in the daily diet is a generous allowance.
Finnish scientist, Dr. V. O. Siven, arrived at the exact same
amount - 30 grams. American scientist, Dr. R. Chittenden, found,
in his extensive experiments with athletes and soldiers, that 30
to 50 grams of protein a day is sufficient for maximum physical
performance. He also demonstrated that physical performance in
sports and heavy physical work is better on a low protein diet.
Dr. D. M. Hegsted, of Harvard University, found that 27 grams a
day is the average person's daily need for protein. And research
made by Dr. William C. Rose has shown that only 20 grams a day of
mixed proteins (of which only about 2/3 are so-called complete)
is sufficient for our needs. The recent studies by German
Professor, Dr. K. Eimer, showed that athletes' performance
improved after they switched from a 100 gram-a-day animal protein
diet to a 50 gram-a-day vegetable protein diet. And, finally,
recently a Japanese researcher, Dr. Kuratsune, showed that 25-30
grams of protein a day is sufficient to sustain good health.
Based on all this recent research, and taking into consideration
great variation in the protein need of each individual, the
generous conclusions would be that 40 to 50 grams a day of
protein, up to 2/3 derived from vegetable sources, is sufficient
for optimum health.

Can you get too much protein?

Yes, indeed. You can get too much of fat and carbohydrates,
although they are essential nutrients.Even too much of certain
vitamins or minerals is harmful and may cause ill health. And so
it is also with proteins. As essential and important as they are,
too much protein in the diet, especially cooked animal protein,
can cause serious health disorders.
Proteins in excess of actual need can not be stored by the body,
and are only burned as a fuel for energy. As an energy food,
however, proteins are inferior to carbohydrates or fats. The
digestion of proteins in excess of the actual need leaves toxic
residues of metabolic waste products, which contribute to
self-intoxication and consequent disease.
Here is a partial list of what too much protein in your diet can
cause:

Toxic residues in the tissues. Professor Kofranyi, of famous Max
Plank Institute for Nutritional Research, said, "More protein
than needed builds only more toxins."
Biochemical imbalance in tissues and resultant overacidity.
Accumulation of uric acid, urea and toxic purines in the tissues.
Diminished strength and endurance. Drs. Chittenden and Fisher
concluded that uric acid, urea, and purines of meat poison and
interfere with muscle and nerve function.
Intestinal putrefaction and resultant constipation and
auto-toxemia.
Vitamin B6 deficiency.
Arteriosclerosis, heart disease and kidney damage.
Arthritis. Recently, Dr. Gerber, professor at New York
University, said that "faulty protein metabolism" may be one of
the contributing causes of arthritis.
A good rule to follow in regard to protein is: enough but not too
much.

Meat protein versus vegetable protein

You have been told that "you need animal proteins for optimum
health." You also have been told that "only animal proteins are
complete, and vegetable proteins are incomplete." Both statements
are false. Again, in all probability they are based on antiquated
research. Dr. Thomas, in 1909, coined the term biological value
of protein.Proteins are made of amino acids.Of 20 or so amino
acids, eight are considered essential. That is, they can not be
produced within the body and must be supplied by the food you
eat. Not all foods contain all the amino acids.Foods which
contain all the essential amino acids are called the complete
protein foods. Those which lack one or more of the essential
amino acids are called the incomplete protein foods.
Until very recently it has been assumed that only animal proteins
- meat, fish, eggs and milk - contained complete proteins, and
that all vegetable proteins were incomplete. Recent research has
proven this assumption to be erroneous. Research from one of the
leading institutions for nutritional research in the world, the
Max Plank Institute in Germany, showed that many vegetables,
fruits, seeds, nuts and grains are excellent sources of complete
proteins. This is corroborated by research from many other
research centers. Soybeans, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds,
almonds, potatoes, and most fruits and green vegetables contain
complete proteins. Furthermore, recent research has established
two extremely important facts, hitherto unknown to science.

1. Vegetable proteins are higher in biological value than animal
proteins. For example, proteins in potatoes are biologically
superior to proteins in meat, eggs or milk.
2. Raw proteins have higher biological value than cooked
proteins. You need only one-half the amount of proteins if you
eat raw vegetable proteins instead of cooked animal proteins.
Potatoes, a stepchild of American nutrition, are actually
excellent health food and a good source of superior quality
proteins. In Germany, ten per cent of the average dietary intake
of protein is obtained from potatoes. It has been demonstrated
that people have lived on potatoes as the sole source of proteins
as long as six years and enjoyed excellent health. All green
vegetables have complete proteins of highest biological value.

"Where do you get your proteins?"

This is the most frequently asked question by heavy meateaters as
soon as they find out that I do not advise meat eating. Did you
ever wonder where the wild horse, who builds a magnificent body
in a couple of years, gets all his proteins? From the grass he
eats, of course. And where do about one half of the world's
population, who do not eat meat for religious or other reasons,
get their proteins?
The answer is that our Creator in his wisdom, knowing how
important proteins are for man and animal, made them a part of
every naturally occuring food. Every plant, every vegetable,
every fruit and every seed contains some protein. It is
virtuallIyimpossible not to get enough protein in your diet
provided you have enough to eat of natural, unrefined foods. The
proponents of a high protein meat diet often refer to the
big-bellied, starved African children as an example of protein
deficiency. These children suffer from protein deficiency not
because they eat a protein-deficient diet, but because they are
starving. The diet of raw vegetables, fruits, seeds, grains, and
nuts plus milk and cheese - so-called lacto-vegetarian diet, as
described in the next chapter - will supply in abundance not only
all the proteins you need but also with all the other nutritive
substances, such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fatty
acids, enzymes and trace elements.
Let me re-emphasize that the proteins in vegetables, fruits and
many seeds and nuts are biologically superior to animal proteins.
And your protein needs can be satisfied by one half the amount of
proteins if you eat them raw instead of cooked.
Common fallacies about protein
You have been told that "you need lots of protein each day. "
This is a typical example of half-truth. It is true that your
body needs proteins each day for its vital functions and
new-building of cells. But you don't have to eat proteins each
day. Your body can exist without any food, and consequently
without any proteins, for weeks and months, as evidenced by
prolonged therapeutic fasting. It is a general observation that
the protein level of the blood (serum albumin reading) of fasting
patients remains constant and normal during the whole fasting
period, in spite of the fact that no protein is consumed. The
reason for this is that the proteins in your body are in the
so-called dynamic state: they are constantly changed from one
form to another, being decomposed and resynthesized from blood
plasma amino acids. Amino acids from the old and broken-down
cells are not wasted, but are re-used for the building of new
cells. Thus the body is using and re-using the same proteins
again and again where they are needed. This shows that you don't
have to eat high-protein meals every day, although your body does
need protein every day.
Another common misconception about protein is that "only complete
proteins can satisfy your protein needs. " It is a well
established physiological fact that foods with so-called
incomplete proteins will complement one another, rendering their
total available protein content biologically complete. Tortillas
and beans, or a whole-wheat bread and cheese sandwich are good
examples. Corn, wheat or beans are, seperately, incomplete
protein foods, but eaten in the above combinations the proteins
become complete.

Are meat eaters healthier than vegetarians?

Some popular health writers (who apparently would rather be
popular than truthful) tell you that lots of animal protein is a
must for optimum health.
They will tell you that meat eaters are healthier than
vegetarians. Haven't they ever met Seventh-Day Adventists? There
are a million of them, mostly living right here in the United
States. Seventh-Day Adventists supply grand-scale scientific
evidence supporting the low-animal protein diet.
A recent study conducted by several medical doctors. show that
Seventh-Day Adventists, who do not eat meat for religious
reasons, have:

40% less coronary disease
400% less death rate from respiratory diseases
100% lower mortality rate from all causes
1000% lower death rate from lung cancer
50% less dental caries among their children

These statistics speak for themselves. They repudiate clearly the
myth perpetrated by the meat-eating propagandists that meat
eaters are healthier than vegetarians. The above is an
extraordinarily remarkable scientific study made by reputable
medical men and reported in the Journal of the American Medical
Association which shows that a large group of people, who live in
the United States under seemingly the same conditions as the rest
of us, but do not eat meat, have such superior health compared to
the rest of the Americans!
There is no better way than the empirical way to prove any
nutritional theory. If one can put the theory into practice or
see what results it has produced through the centuries, even
milleniums, of actual application - then it is worth more than
bookshelves of scientific reasoning and laboratory proofs.
Such empirical evidence of the superiority of low animal protein
diet is easily available. Here are a few convincing facts:
l. The Hunza people, living in an isolated kingdom in the
Himalayas, are considered "the healthiest people in the world" by
all researchers who studied their health condition, including,
famous British physician Dr. R. McCarrison, who lived among them
for years. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatic diseases,
high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, arthritis and many other
diseases common to western countries, are unknown in Hunza. Their
longevity and endurance are legendary. They live up to 90 and 100
and are virile, strong and active after they reach 80 and 90. All
researchers who studied them agree that their diet is the major
factor in their unusual health and longevity. The Hunza diet is a
high natural carbohydrate-low animal protein diet! Their staples
are grains, such as wheat, barley, buckwheat; fruits, mostly
apricots, apples and grapes; assorted vegetables, eaten mostly
raw; and very little milk, mostly goat milk. They eat few eggs,
and very little meat, only on festive occasions, not more often
than once a month.
2. In the last few years, researchers discovered two primitive
tribes, in different parts of the world, who lived in total
isolation from the civilized world for more than a thousand
years. One was a Yemenite tribe of Semitic origin; the other,
Maya Indians of Yucatan. Scientists who studied these people were
amazed at their phenomenal health condition, long life and
freedom from diseases. They also discovered that the diet of
these primitive people with superior health was a low animal
protein-high natural carbohydrate diet! Yemenites ate meat
occasionally and sparingly, but the Maya Indians were 100%
vegetarians, their main food being corn, beans, and vegetables.
3. Russians are known for their good health, longevity and
endurance. They have seven times more centenarians per million
than the United States. They are low protein people. 78.5% of
their protein need is derived from vegetable sources, and only
21.5% from animal sources.(In the U.S., 29% is vegetable and 71%
is animal protein!) Futhermore, a suprisingly great number of
Russia's 21,000 centenarians are total vegetarians! Russia's
health records are far better than America's. Their mortality
rate is 7.3 per thousand as compared to 9.4 in the UnitedStates.
The life expectancy of the Russian male is 70.1 - the American
male's is only 66.7 years.
4. Bulgarians are among the healthiest peoples in Europe. They
are the tallest people in south Europe and they possess great
vitality and longevity. There are more centenarians in Bulgaria
than in any other country in the world - 1,600 persons, 100 years
or over, per million of population, as compared to only 9 persons
per million among heavy meat-eating Americans. Bulgarians eat
very little meat. Their diet consists largely of black bread
(most whole rye and barley), vegetables and soured milk in the
form of yogurt and kefir. One study made by a Swedish doctor
showed that of 158 Bulgarians,.100 years or over, only 5 ate meat
regularly.

High or low?

The scientific and empirical evidence presented in this chapter
clearly shows that the diet most conducive to optimum health and
long life is not the high protein, but the high natural
carbohydrate-low animal protein, diet. Americans eat more meat
and more proteins than most other nations in the world .
Americans also lead the world in cancer, heart disease,
arthritis, obesity, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis,
mortality rate, miscarriages and birth deformities, and other
degenerative diseases. Heart disease is our greatest killer. By
the way, studies have shown that a low protein vegetarian diet
can prevent 97% of coronary occlusions, or heart disease.
This presentation should, however, not be misconstrued to imply
that you should minimize the importance of protein in your diet.
You need, to be sure, good protein in sufficient amounts for the
proper functioning of all your organs, and for the maintenance of
good health. But because proteins are so important it does not
automatically follow that you can eat unrestricted amounts of
them.
Low animal protein-high natural carbohydrate diet holds the
greatest potential for optimum health, prevention of disease ,
greater vitality and extended longevity.
This is not a theory, hypothesis or wishful thinking, but a
firmly established scientific conclusion, based on the latest
research and empirical facts.......

THE SEVEN BASIC RULES OF SCIENTIFIC VITALIZING NUTRITION FOR
OPTIMUM HEALTH AND LONG LIFE

1. EAT ONLY NATURAL FOODS
Your body is a living organism, a part of a complex universe and
subject to the laws of nature. It must be nourished by natural,
organic food elements in their natural, unaltered state in order
to survive and function in good health.
What are natural foods? Foods grown on fertile soil under natural
conditions, and consumed in their natural state are natural
foods. Foods grown in depleted soils with the help of chemicals
and processed by heat, irradiation or chemical treatment, are not
natural foods.
Here are some examples:
Eggs laid by hens running outdoors in sunlight and eating grass,
seeds, insects and worms - and in the company of roosters! - are
natural, fertile eggs, with dark yolks and full, nutritional
value. But eggs produced by "cooped-up" chickens in an "egg
factory", by hens who never see daylight or rooster and are fed
only synthetic medicated mash, are not natural eggs. Such eggs
are infertile, they will not produce chickens, their yolks are
pale, their chemical composition is altered, their vitamin
content is lower and their total nutritional value is way below
that of a natural egg. Among other things, eggs produced by
coopedup chickens contain twice as much saturated fats as the
natural eggs do.Such eggs can not possibly sustain the health of
those who eat them.
Natural, raw, unpasteurized milk has more vitamins and enzymes;
the proteins and minerals of such milk are easily digested and
assimilated by the body. Pasteurization reduces the vitamin and
enzyme content and makes minerals, fatty acids and proteins less
assimilable and digestible.
Natural fruits, vegetables and grains should grow in healthy,
humus-rich soils, without chemical fertilizers or toxic sprays.
Natural foods contain more protein, more vitamins, more minerals
and other nutrients, particularly the vital enzymes, than the
canned or packaged, unnatural or processed foods bought at your
supermarket.
It should be kept in mind that our knowledge of food composition
is very incomplete. Scientists who tried to feed test animals a
synthetic diet composed of all the nutritive substances known to
science, have found that animals could live in seemingly good
health, and even have reproductive capacity. However, from the
second and third generation, animals lost their power to
reproduce and the whole strain gradually died. Also, their health
condition and the growth rate were adversely affected by the
synthetic diet. These experiments prove that natural foods
contain more than just all the known or discovered nutrients.
When you eat natural, unprocessed and unadulterated foods, you
will get the benefit of all these undiscovered, but vital,
substances as well.
That your health and your longevity are in a direct relationship
to the naturalness of the foods you eat is a well-established
scientific fact. Dr. Weston A. Price, Vilhjalmur Steffansson, Dr.
McCarrison, Arnold DeVries, and many others, who made extensive
travels and studies of diet habits and their relation to health
and longevity of practically every "primitive" people in the
world, have found that when the diet was made of natural, fresh,
unprocessed foods, grown in their own environment, the people had
no disease or tooth decay. Conversely, where they discovered
people subject to dental decay and various other degenerative
diseases of civilized man, they invariably found that they ate
denatured, cooked, processed foods, and that white flour, canned
foods, and white sugar had made their way to them from more
"civilized" countries.
Moreover, regardless of the composition of the diet - whether it
was exclusively vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, predominantly meat
or largely dairy-product diet - as long as the foods were
natural, unprocessed, and largely eaten raw, the people
maintained vibrant health, lived long, and enjoyed youthful
vitality. Arnold DeVries has studied the historical records of
the North and South American Indians, Eskimos, Asians, Africans,
Australian aborigines, New Zealand Maories, and people living on
Pacific and Atlantic islands, and found that all of them enjoyed
glowing health, great fertility and almost incredible endurance.
Diseases were almost unknown. Women had fast and painless
childbirths, and were usually back to their work in the fields an
hour later. Men could run all day without fatigue. There was no
tooth decay, or loss of sight or hearing, or gray hair. Although
statistical life expectancy was low because of the poor
sanitation, most of those who survived lived to be 100 years or
over. DeVries also found that as soon as "civilized" foods were
introduced to these people, their health began to decline.
Childbirth became painful and prolonged; tooth decay made its
impact; vitality and endurance abated; and they gradually became
subject to all the diseases of "civilized" people.
Synthetic, denatured, altered and devitalized foods will not
sustain health, but will inevitably bring about a degeneration of
normal bodily functions and ultimately disease and premature
aging.

2. EAT ONLY WHOLE FOODS
Whole foods are simply foods which still contain all the
nutrients nature has put into them - not less and not more! -
complete, unfragmented, unrefined, neither fortified nor
enriched. Whole wheat bread, potatoes in jackets, brown rice,
sugar cane, oranges - are whole foods. White bread, instant
potatoes, polished rice, white sugar and orange juice - are not
whole foods. They are fragmented, concentrated or refined foods
from which important nutrient factors have been processed out,
destroyed, or removed. More than 90% of all the foods on the
average American table today have been tampered with in one way
or another, and most of the vital nutrients have been either
taken out of them or destroyed.
Breakfast cereals, processed oils, fruit juices, all products
made with white sugar and white flour are typical examples of
such fragmented, devitalized and adulterated foods. Every time a
natural substance is removed from a food, the natural balance is
disturbed. Every time a chemical is added to the food, the
natural balance is also disturbed. Every time food is refined or
fragmented, such as extracting sugar from sugar cane or sugar
beets, or separating the wheat endosperm (from which wheat flour
is made) from the whole wheat kernel - the natural balance is
disturbed. When you eat such fragmented foods, they disturb the
normal bio-chemical and metabolic processes within your body.
It took thousands of years for your body to adjust its
bio-chemical processes to the composition of natural foods. When
suddenly the composition of foods is altered, your body is not
able to re-adjust its chemical processes. This causes havoc in the
body chemistry with disease as the ultimate result.
The two worst examples of fragmented foods are white sugar and
white flour - these two nutritionless monstrosities, disguised
under the name of food, are responsible more than anything else
for the deterioration of health in civilized countries. During
World War II, in European countries, the consumption of white
flour and white sugar was sharply reduced due to rationing. The
statistics also showed a sharp reduction in the incidence of many
degenerative diseases during these years, notably a sharp
decrease in diabetes. Note, that although the use of refined
carbohydrates decreased, the consumption of whole, natural
carbohydrates, such as whole grains, actually increased during
the war. This proves that natural, whole carbohydrate foods are
health-promoting, whereas refined carbohydrates are detrimental
to health.
Whole wheat, for example, is a good source of vitamin E. But it
would take more than 200 slices of white bread to secure a proper
daily requirement of this vital vitamin, because most of it has
been removed with the wheat germ in processing. The same goes
with the B-vitamins, minerals, best proteins and the natural oils
of the wheat. If you eat enriched bread, do not think you get
these nutrients anyway, since they allegedly have been added to
the bread. None of the vitamin E, oils, minerals, or proteins
have been added; and from more than 15 vitamins of the B-complex
that have been removed in processing, only 3 have been returned
in insignificant amounts. If this is enrichment, I d like to know
what is impoverishment!
The American housewife, brainwashed by T.V. commercials, feeds
her family "enriched" white bread, believing that it will help to
build "stronger bodies in ten different ways". But in the
refining process, the white bread has lost 65 to 75% of all the
important natural vitamins and minerals, and only a few of them
have been replaced with inorganic, synthetic chemical vitamins
that lack the nutritional resemblance to the organic life-factors
that were removed. Gene nutritionist said that such "enrichment"
is similar to robbing a man of his wallet, watch and glasses, and
giving him a bus token to get home on! Because vitamins are
synergistic in their action, when part of a complex, such as one
or more B-vitamins, has been removed, serious deficiencies are
likely to arise. Enrichment may actually do more harm than good.
The value of whole, unrefined foods was dramatically demonstrated
on a grand scale during the First World War. Denmark was plagued
by a serious food shortage. The government assigned Dr. M.
Hindhede, the director of the Danish Institute of Nutrition
Research, to design a program for protecting the nation from the
hunger threat. The first action of Hindhede was to increase the
whole-grain production by limiting the livestock production and
curtailing the sale of meat, and thus saving grain for human
consumption. Production of alcoholic beverages was banned for the
same reason. Also, grain processing was stopped and only
whole-grain bread and cereals were allowed to be sold. Farmers
were directed and encouraged to produce more grain, green
vegetables, fruits, milk and butter, instead of meat.
These simple, but from a nutritional standpoint revolutionary
changes in eating habits, resulted in spectacular and rapid
changes in the health condition of the whole nation. The death
rate dropped over 40% in one year. Diseases that affected other
European countries, including the dreaded influenza epidemic,
by-passed Denmark. In only a few years, Denmark became the
healthiest nation in all of Europe!
In those regions of India where polished white rice is the staple
food, the incidence of diabetes and peptic ulcers is much higher
than in the other regions, such as Punjab, where instead of rice
the dietary staples are coarse wheat and corn.
In Africa, where natives eat large quantities of sugar cane,
there is virtually no diabetes or dental caries. When these
natives, however, move to the cities and begin to eat white
sugar, they rapidly develop caries, diabetes, ulcers and other
diseases of civilization. Dr. John Yudkin, of London University,
has conclusively demonstrated that white sugar and white flour
products are the major cause of heart disease.
Whole foods are an absolute must for optimum health. Whole foods
contain not only complete nutrition, but also all the enzymes and
other factors necessary for the proper, effective digestion and
good assimilation of each particular food. When some of the
vitamins, minerals and enzymes are removed, as in the case of
white sugar or white flour, as well as other refined or processed
foods, the digestion and assimilation is incomplete - with
nutritional deficiencies and disease as the ultimate result.

3. EAT ONLY LIVING FOODS
Dr. Robert Bell hit the nail on the head when he said, "Man is
the only creature upon this earth who spoils his food before he
eats it." Man's slow degeneration to the present inferno of
diseases started with the discovery of cooking. Since then man
seems to have been using his creative imagination and unlimited
inventiveness for devising newer and newer means of ruining the
nutritional value of his food. The latest of these devices is
irradiation. Now you can buy potatoes, yams, onions, and other
vegetables that do not sprout and will keep "fresh" forever. What
this irradiation with atomic rays does to the lifesustaining
power of the food nobody really knows, as yet. The only thing the
processors are concerned about is, of course, the marketing
convenience and the longer shelf life.
Cooking destroys enzymes 100%. Enzymes are vital catalysts,
absolutely essential for the proper digestion and assimilation of
the food, as well as for all other functions in your body. Nobel
Prize Winner, Professor Virtanen, from Finland, has demonstrated
that in the process of chewing raw foods, new active substances
are formed in the mouth with the help of enzymes. It is estimated
that about 600 various enzymes are essential for human health,
but all enzymes in foods are destroyed in cooking. In addition,
cooking destroys many of the vitamins. Watersoluble vitamins B
and C are particularly vulnerable to the effect of heat and
cooking. Minerals also are depleted by cooking and are usually
thrown away with the cooking water.
Prolonged storage, freezing, drying, salting and canning, are all
more or less destructive to the nutritional value of the food.
Fresh vegetables stored at room temperature for only one day lose
up to 50 per cent of their vitamin C. Blanching and freezing
destroys vitamins B1 and B2. Since the average American diet
consists up to 90 per cent of cooked, frozen or otherwise
processed foods, it is no wonder that half of the population is
suffering from various degrees of vitamin deficiencies and
malnutrition.
Raw, living foods contain all the nutritive elements in the right
proportion and balance. Contrary to the popular notion, most
foods in their raw state are easier to digest than the same foods
in their cooked state. This is particularly true of all fruits
and most vegetables and grains.
Even moderate heating destroys nutritional value of foods.
Pasteurization of milk destroys some of the vitamins and all of
the enzymes. Lewis J. Silvers, M.D., says that at least three
factors in milk are destroyed by the process of pasteurization:
an anemia-prevention factor, an ulcer-prevention factor, and an
arthritis-prevention factor.
The therapeutic value of raw foods is well known. In most
European biological clinics raw foods are used in healing of many
common diseases, such as cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis,
etc. The famous Gerson cure for cancer is based primarily on raw
foods and raw juices. In animal tests, arthritis was
experimentally caused by feeding animals cooked foods
exclusively.
Raw, living foods are equally known for their prophylactic (or
disease-preventive) value. Furthermore, raw foods act as a
cleansing agent on the digestive and eliminative systems and are
the best preventive measure agains constipation.
The aging-preventive and rejuvenative property of raw foods was
scientifically demonstrated and explained in European and
Japanese research. Raw plant foods increase the micro-electric
tension in cell tissue, as was discovered by the Viennese
scientists investigating cell permeability. Increased
micro-electric tension in the cell tissue improves cell
oxygenation, stimulates cell metabolism, increases the cell's
resistance to aging, speeds the process of cell renewal - in
short, improves the cell's metabolism and prevents biochemical
suffocation. Japanese researchers at the University of Kyushu
have shown that raw plant foods contain substances that help the
body in its fight against disease-producing agents.
In terms of application, many would find eating raw foods
exclusively too difficult. But you should make an effort to eat
fresh, raw foods as much as possible. At least two thirds of all
foods eaten should be in their natural, raw state. Practi- cally
all fruits and vegetables can be eaten raw. If cooking is
absolutely necessary, food should be cooked as little as
possible, preferably steamed with little or no water. All broth,
of course, should be used also.
Eat all nuts raw.You will discover that they are much tastier and
easier to digest in their raw state, than when they are roasted
and salted. Many seeds and grains can be eaten raw, especially
when they are Sprouted.* Raw, unpasteurized milk is available at
better health food stores.
Remember, cooked food is dead food. Only living foods can build
healthy bodies.

4. EAT ONLY POISON-FREE FOODS
I must admit that it is much easier to give such advice than to
follow it in today's poisoned world. Poisons in food are the
greatest menace to health today. It is almost impossible to
obtain food stuffs that are free from poisonous residues and
additives. Fruits and vegetables contain residues of dozens of
poisonous pesticides, waxes, bleaches, artificial colorings and
preservatives. Meat, milk, butter and poultry contain, in
addition to DDT and other insecticides, residues of hormones,
antibiotics and other drugs used to speed animal growth.
Processed meats, bread, cereals, and canned foods and drinks are
loaded with some of the nearly one thousand different chemicals
which are now used in the food-processing industry. And many of
these have never been tested for their possible toxicity!
There is a growing concern among world scientists that mankind is
committing slow suicide by poisoning himself with all these
foreign substances in his food and his environment. Many of the
newest diseases are directly related to the poisons in our foods.
The growing incidence of birth deformities is one of the most
conspicuous diseases attributed to the poisonous drugs and
residues in foods.
The American public is becoming more and more aware of the
dangers of DDT, malathion, parathion, and other pesticides in
foods. The beginning of a new decade, the seventies, brought one
hope of a nation-wide awakening in regard to the environment. DDT
was banned in several states in 1969, and in 1970 the Federal
Government took action of restricting DDT use in the whole
country. But one of the gravest dangers to our health, of which
we only seldom hear, is a gradual but universal leadpoisoning. In
Europe, scientists are alarmed at the incredible speed with which
lead is poisoning our environment. Lead comes to the atmosphere
mostly from the automobiles which burn gasoline treated with
lead.It pollutes the air, settles in the soils and is absorbed by
the fruits and vegetables. Tests made in Germany show that some
of the vegetables, especially carrots, contain deadly amounts of
lead. Many poisonings from eating lead-containing carrots were
registered. Lead has a degenerative effect on the central nervous
system and affects genetic forces, as found by Russian
scientists. Even in small amounts it causes degenerative changes
in the liver, kidneys, heart and other organs.
Every effort, therefore, should be made to obtain poison-free
organically grown foods. They are often available in health food
stores. If supermarket-quality vegetables are used, they should
be washed carefully or peeled. Cucumbers, green and red peppers,
tomatoes, celery, carrots, apples, pears, grapes, and cherries
can be washed and brushed in warm water with soap or mild
detergent, then rinsed well several times and finally rinsed
under cold running water to remove the traces of soap.

Remember, just rinsing produce in cold water will do no good;
most sprays and waxes are oil-soluble and plain cold water will
not remove them at all.

5. EAT HIGH NATURAL CARBOHYDRATE-LOW ANIMAL PROTEIN DIET
You have learned in the previous chapter that the diet with the
greatest potential for optimum health and long life is a high
natural carbohydrate-low animal protein diet. This is contrary to
what you have read and heard from present-day nutritionists and
"authorities". Even the most respected nutritional advisors and
health writers in the United States have been so misled by the
high-protein propaganda and by the misleading protein research,
sponsored by the meat-packing and dairy industries, that they
also fell prey to this high-protein myth. They continue repeating
the well-established lie that "we can never get enough protein",
This, in spite of the following facts:
• Americans, who eat more protein than any other nation, are also
the most disease-ridden people in the world. All nations known
for their good health and exceptional vitality and longevity live
on a low animal protein-high natural carbohydrate diet.
Now, before you misunderstand me on the carbohydrate issue, let's
make it clear that I am speaking of natural carbohydrates. Of
course, what you have heard about the harmfulness of a high
carbohydrate diet is true - if you mean refined carbohydrates
such as white sugar and white flour products.. In fact, of all
the underlying causes of ill health in civilized countries, I
would list the refined carbohydrates, such as white sugar and
white flour, and all foods made with them, as the number one
cause. When I recommend a high natural carbohydrate-low animal
protein diet I mean that the emphasis in your diet should be on
fresh natural fruits and vegetables and unrefined, whole seeds
and grains - all natural carbohydrate foods. These foods are the
staples of the healthy and long-lived Hunzas, Bulgarians,
Russians, Central American Indians, etc., as you have seen in the
previous chapter.
The most perfectly balanced diet is a diet rich in organically
grown fruits and vegetables and raw or sprouted whole grains,
seeds and nuts. Lacto-vegetarians can use raw unpasteurized milk,
yogurt and homemade cottage cheese from organically raised
animals. Fortified with such foods as cold-pressed vegetable
oils, honey, wheat germ and bran, brewer's yeast, kelp, and dry
fruits, this high natural carbohydrate-low animal protein diet
will supply you with all the required nutrients - vitamins,
minerals, trace elements, enzymes, proteins, fatty acids,
carbohydrates, and other vital substances - in a natural, pure,
and easily assimilated form.

6. SYSTEMATIC UNDEREATING AND PERIODIC FASTING
Would you like to learn the two most important health and
longevity secrets? Here they are: 1) systematic undereating, and
2) periodic fasting (see Chapters 8 and 9 on Fasting).
Not only what you eat but how much you eat is of vital importance
for your health. The latest scientific research shows that
overeating is one of the main causes of man's ills, and that,
conversely, undereating is singularly the most important health
and longevity factor.
Russian statistics show that one common characteristic of all
Russian centenarians is that they are all moderate eaters and
have been such throughout their lives. Dr. C. M. McCay, of
Cornell University, has shown that overeating is the major cause
of premature aging. Systematic undereating, on the other hand,
increases longevity and decreases the incidence of the
degenerative diseases.
Recently, scientific studies involving earthworms, conducted by a
recognized educational institution, showed that fasting worms
periodically, every other day, caused them to live 50 times as
long as usual!
Food eaten in excess of actual bodily need acts in the system
as a poison. It interferes with digestion, causes internal
sluggishness, gas, incomplete assimilation of nutrients,
putrefaction, and actually poisons your whole system. Compulsive
gluttons - overeaters - are usually always hungry because they
are undernourished. "Overfed, but undernourished", as so
correctly expressed by H. Curtis Wood, Jr., M. D.
Poor digestion and assimilation of nutrients caused by chronic
overeating causes nutritional deficiencies. Although the
compulsive glutton is fat, his body craves food because it is
starving for minerals and vitamins and other needed substances.
The less you eat, the less hungry you feel, because the food is
more efficiently digested and better utilized. Unbelievable? But
true - try it! And see the difference in the way you feel.

7. CORRECT EATING HABITS
It is important not only to select and prepare foods properly,
but to eat them properly as well.
Slow eating and good mastication are essential for good health.
It is far better to skip a meal than to eat it in a hurry. Good
chewing increases assimilation of nutrients in the intestinal
tract and makes you feel satisfied with a smaller amount of food.
Saliva contains digestive enzymes; therefore, well-chewed and
generously salivated food is practically half-digested before it
enters the stomach......

CHRISTIAN FEASTS AND CUSTOMS #6--- CHRISTMAS

 CHRISTIAN  FEASTS  AND  CUSTOMS

by FRANCIS  WEISER (1952)

NAMES  AND   GREETING

Liturgical Names •

The original Latin names for Christmas are: Festum Nativitatis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi (the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ) and the shorter form, Dies Natalis Domini (the Birthday of Our Lord).

From these Latin names most nations obtained their popular terms for the Christmas feast: II Natale in Italy, La Natndad in Spain, Natal in Portugal, Nadal in southern France, Nadolig in Wales (and probably the Gaelic NoUaig, as well). The Greek Genethlia means "Nativity," as do the names for Christmas in Hungarian (Kardcsony) and in most of the Slavic languages: Boze Narodzenie (God's Birth) in Polish; Rozhdestvo Khrista (Christ's Birth) in Russian and Ukrainian.37

The French word Noel can be explained as either coming from the Latin natalis (birthday) or from the word nowel which means "news." In an old English Christmas verse the angel says:

I come from hevin to tell

The best nowellis that ever befell.

It is possible that both explanations are right. Noel and nowel may be words of different origin that have become identical in meaning because they are pronounced the same.38

Popular Names •

The English word Christmas is based on the same pattern as the old names for other feast days in the liturgical year, such as Michaelmas, Martinmas, Candlemas. The first mention of the name, "Christes Maesse," dates from the year 1038. It means "the Mass of Christ." The English nation (as did all Christian nations at the time) acknowledged the Sacrifice of the Mass as the most important part of the Christmas celebration. For instance, the word in the Dutch language was Kersmis (the Mass of Christ); the old Dutch form is Kerstes-misse or Kersmisse, the German, Christmesse.

The German word for Christmas, Weihnacht or, in the plural form, Weihnachten, means "the blessed (or holy) night." Similar terms meaning "the holy night" are used in some Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Yugoslavian). The Lithuanian word Kaledos is derived from the verb Kaledoti (to beg, to pray) and has the meaning "Day of Prayer."

Yule •

The origin of the word yule is disputed. Some scholars say it comes from the old Germanic word Jol {Jul, Giul), meaning a turning wheel (in this instance the sun wheel rising after the winter solstice). A better explanation, however, might be the Anglo-Saxon word geol (feast). Since the greatest popular feast in pre-Christian times was the celebration of the winter solstice, the whole month of December was called geola (feast month). This name was preserved in the English and German languages, and later applied to the Feast of Christmas: Yule in English, and Jul in German.39

Merry Christmas •

When this greeting was originally used, the word merry did not mean "joyful, hilarious, gay," as it does today. In those days it meant "blessed, peaceful, pleasant," expressing spiritual joys rather than earthly happiness. It was thus used in the famous phrase "Merry England."

The well-known carol "God rest you merry, gentlemen" is an excellent example of the original meaning of merry. The position of the comma clearly shows the true meaning (that the word is not an adjective describing "gentlemen"), and therefore is not "God rest you, joyful gentlemen,"but "God rest you peacefully, gentlemen." 40

LITURGY

The Vigil of Christmas •

The Mass of December 24 is not the original vigil Mass of the feast, but was inserted later, during the fifth century. The actual vigil Mass, following the night service of prayer, was the midnight Mass at St. Mary Major, which is now the first Mass of Christmas Day. Another unusual feature of this Mass is its joyful and festive character. Unlike the other vigils, in which the penitential note is stressed, the Mass of the Christmas vigil is jubilant, filled with holy joy. That the vestments are of penitential color appears almost an incongruity when one studies the Mass text. 41

The spirit of this joyful and jubilant vigil has asserted itself in the observance of the faithful through all the past centuries. In the countries of central Europe people just could not see how this day should be as strict and painful a fast as other fast days of penitential character. While gladly keeping abstinence from meat all through the day, they felt justified in reducing the strictness of fasting as to the amount of food. Thus a legitimate custom of "joyful fast" (jeiunium gaudiosum) was established in such countries for this one day of the year. 42

Three Masses •

A custom that reaches back to the early centuries of Christianity is the celebration of three Masses on the Feast of the Nativity. It was originally reserved to the pope alone, and did not become universal until the end of the first millennium when the papal books of ceremonies had been adopted by the FranMsh Church. 43

The first Mass originally was connected with the vigil service at the chapel of the manger in the church of St. Mary Major in Rome. 44 There Pope Sixtus III (440) had erected an oratory with a manger, which was considered a faithful replica of the crib at Bethlehem.45 The pope celebrated the Holy Sacrifice about midnight, in the presence of a small crowd, since the chapel could not hold many people.

The public and official celebration of the feast was held on Christmas Day at the church of St. Peter, where immense crowds attended the pope's Mass and received Communion. This was the third Mass as it appears in todays Missals. Under Pope' Gregory VII (1085) the place of this Mass was changed from St. Peters to St Mary Major, because that church was nearer to the Lateran Palace (where the popes lived).46

In the fifth century, the popes started the custom of visiting at dawn, between these two services, the palace church of the Byzantine governor. There they conducted a service in honor of Saint Anastasia, a highly venerated martyr whose body had been transferred from Constantinople about 465 and rested in this church which bore her name. The whole Byzantine colony in Rome gathered at their church on Christmas Day for this solemn visit of the Holy Father. In later centuries, when the power and prestige of the East Roman Empire waned, the popular devotion of Saint Anastasia declined. The Station in her honor was still kept, however, and has been retained in Missals up to the present day. Instead of the original Mass in honor of Saint Anastasia, another Mass of the Nativity was substituted, in which the saint is now merely commemorated. This is the second one of the three Masses on Christmas Day.47

As the texts of the Roman Missal show, the first Mass honors the eternal generation of the Son from the Father, the second celebrates His incarnation and birth into the world, the third His birth, through love and grace, in the hearts of men. According to'the contents of the respective Gospels, people came to call the first Mass "Angels Mass," the second "Shepherds Mass," and the third "Mass of the Divine Word." 48

There are no special liturgical ceremonies other than the three Masses on Christmas Day. The feast, however, is usually celebrated with great splendor and solemnity in all churches. The color of the liturgical vestments is white, in token of its joyful and consoling character.

Midnight Mass •

The first Mass is usually said at midnight on Christmas because of the traditional belief that Christ was born at that hour. There is, of course, no historical evidence to uphold this pious belief, which has its source in the following text from the Book of Wisdom (18, 14-15):

For while all things were in quiet silence, and the night was in the midst of her course, Thy almighty word leapt down from heaven from Thy royal throne, as a fierce conqueror into the midst of the land of destruction.

As the context shows, these words refer to the slaying of the first-born in Egypt; but the medieval theologians applied it as a prophetical reference to the Incarnation of the Divine Word. A beautiful Latin hymn of the fourth century, "Quando noctis medium" expresses this common belief in our Lord's birth at midnight:

When the midnight, dark and still,

Wrapped in silence vale and hill:

God the Son, through Virgins birth,

Following the Fathers will,

Started life as Man on earth. 49

In the liturgy of the Church, midnight is not assigned as the official time for the first Mass. It is merely prescribed that it be said in node (during the night). Hence in some places the first Mass is celebrated before dawn, at four or five in the morning. During earlier centuries (400-1200) the Roman regulations prescribed that the first Mass should be celebrated ad galli cantum (when the cock crows), which was about three o'clock in the inorning.50 A relic of this custom is found among the Spanish-speaking people, who even today call the midnight Mass Misa de Gallo (Mass of the Cock).

FOLKLORE

Legends •

The sacred character of the night from December 24 to 25 has been acknowledged from ancient times by the term "Holy Night." Popular traditions of the Middle Ages ascribed to this night a hallowed and mysterious note of celebration and wondrous goodness. A spirit of peace and adoration was thought to prevail over the whole world, and nature was pictured as taking part in this joyful observance. Many of these legends are| still alive today and form a charming part of the folklore of Christmas.

The cattle in the stables fall on their knees at midnight on Christmas; so do the deer in the forest.51 The bees awake from sleep and hum a beautiful symphony of praise to the Divine Child; but only those can hear it who are dear to the Lord.52 The birds sing all night at Christmas; their voices become sweeter and more melodious, and even the sparrows sing like nightingales. In the Orient there is a legend that during Holy Night all trees and plants, especially those on the banks of the Jordan, bow in reverence toward Bethlehem.53

On Christmas Eve the water in wells and fountains is blessed by God with great healing powers and heavenly sweetness. Mysterious bells are heard pealing joyfully from the depths of deserted -mines, and cheerful lights may be seen blinking at the bottom of lonely shafts and caves.54

Other legends tell of how animals talk like humans at midnight. Their favorite language seemed to he Latin. In an old French mystery play the cock crows with a piercing voice,. "Christus notus est" (Christ is born); the ox moos, "UbiF' (Where?); the lamb answers, "Bethlehem"; and the ass brays, "Eomusr (Let us go!).55 In central Europe the animals in the stable are said to gossip about the public and hidden faults of those who listen in on their conversation.56

One of the oldest Christian legends is the charming story related by Saint Gregory of Tours (594) in his Libri Miroculorum (Book of Miracles) concerning the well of the Magi near Bethlehem. The people of Bethlehem made a practice of going there during Christmas week, bending over the opening of the well and covering themselves and the opening -with blankets or cloaks to shut out the light of day. Then, as they peered into the dark well the star of Bethlehem, according to this pious legend, could be seen moving slowly across the water—but only by those who were pure of heart.57

Another legend inspired the popular belief that the power of malignant spirits, of ghosts and witches, was entirely suspended during the Christmas season. The mystical presence of the Christ Child made them powerless; no harm could be done to men or beasts or homes. Shakespeare has made this legend immortal by these familiar lines from Act I, Scene 1 of Hamlet:

Some say ilxat ever 'gainst that season comes Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long: And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad; The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike, No fairy takes, no witch l%as power to charm, So hallow'd and so gracious is the time.

It was an old and comforting belief that the gates of Paradise were open on Christmas at midnight, so that any person dying at that hour could enter Heaven at once.58 Another legend considered every child born on Christmas especially blessed and fortunate. In addition to other gifts and privileges, such children were said to have the power of seeing spirits, and even of commanding them.59

There is the lovely medieval legend of the "Christmas angel." Every year—so the story goes—the Blessed Virgin Mary selects a number of angels and sends them out from Heaven into various parts of the world. Each angel awakens a little child from its first sleep and carries it to Paradise to sing a carol to the Christ Child. When the children afterward tell of their beautiful errand, some people will say it was just a dream; but those who know better will assure you that these children are chosen by God to be blessed with unusual favors.60

Christmas Eve •

In many European countries, especially in central and northern Europe, the family celebration takes place on the evening of December 24. The common features of this celebration are a festive meal in the evening, at which, besides various native dishes, fish is the main fare, because, according to canon law, Christmas Eve is a day of fast and abstinence among all Catholic populations. Later in the evening the family gathers to enter the festively decorated room where the Christmas tree and the presents are ready. The small children believe that the Christ Child, accompanied by angels, has decorated the tree and brought the gifts. A sign is given with a little bell, the doors fly open, and the whole family enters the room. Standing or kneeling in front of the Christmas crib, which is usually set up under the tree, they pray and sing Christmas hymns. Then they wish each other a blessed feast and proceed to open their gift packages.61

The Slavic people, and also the Lithuanians, have a touching and impressive custom which resembles the Agape (love meal) of the early Christians in apostolic times. At the beginning of the vigilia (the meatless Christmas Eve dinner) the father of the family solemnly breaks wafers (Oplatki) and distributes them, kissing each member of the household and wishing them a joyful feast. In many places these wafers are blessed beforehand by the priest.62

Another custom practiced among the Slavic people and other nations of Europe (among them Hungarians and Lithuanians) is the placing of straw under the tablecloth and the bedding of small children on straw or hay during Holy Night, in memory of the Lord's reclining on straw and hay.in the manger.63

A very old and practical tradition made it obligatory on Christmas Eve to see that the house was thoroughly cleaned, all borrowed articles returned, all tools laid aside, no lint allowed "to remain on rock or wheel," no unfinished work exposed to sight, and no task started that could not be finished by nightfall. 64

It was a widespread practice to be especially kind to animals at Christmas and to allow them to share in the joy of the feast. This tradition is still alive in northern and central Europe and .in Scandinavia. People put out sheafs of grain for the birds and give their farm animals extra fodder on Christmas Eve.65 This custom was begun by Saint Francis of Assisi (1226). He admonished the farmers to give their oxen and asses extra corn and hay at Christmas, "for reverence of the Son of God, whom on such a night the blessed Virgin Mary did lay down in the stall between the ox and the ass." All creation, said he, should rejoice at Christmas, and the dumb creatures had no other means of doing so than by enjoying more comfort and better food. "If I could see the Emperor," he said, "I would implore him to issue a general decree that all people who are able to do so, shall throw grain and corn upon the streets, so that on this great feast day the birds might have enough to eat, especially our sisters, the larks."66

Holy Night •

An inspiring and colorful sight are the Christmas fires burned on~the peaks of the Alps. Like flaming stars they hang in the dark heavens during Holy Night, burning brightly, as the farmers from around the mountainsides walk through the winter night down into the valley for midnight Mass. Each person carries a lantern, swinging it to and fro; the night seems alive with, hundreds of glowworms converging toward the great light at the foot of the mountain—the parish church.67

In some sections of England, Ireland, and Scotland, a quaint and unusually interesting custom was practiced in medieval times. One hour before midnight the big bell of the church would begin to toll its slow and solemn message of mourning, and it would thus continue for the whole hour, as if tolling for a funeral. But at the moment of midnight, just as the clock struck twelve, all the bells would suddenly ring out in a merry peal of Christmas joy. This tolling from eleven to twelve was called "the Devil's funeral," for according to the old legend, the Devil died when Christ was born.68

Another custom connected with midnight Mass is the ringing of church bells during the solemn service of Vespers, which is beld in many places directly before the midnight service.69 In America, chimes and carillons accompany or replace the bells in many churches, ringing out the tunes of familiar carols, especially the joyous invitation "O come, all ye faithful."

In Austria, Bavaria, and other countries of central Europe, carols are played from the church towers before midnight Mass; the tunes of traditional Christmas songs ring out through the stillness of the winter night, clear and peaceful, creating an unforgettable impression.70

In the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the statue of the Divine Child is placed on the altar after the first Mass and then carried in procession to the crypt, where it is laid on the silver star that marks what is believed to be the actual spot of the Lord's birth. The Gospel of Saint Luke is sung, and when the deacon comes to the words "she laid him in a manger," the statue is lifted from the floor and placed in the rock-hewn crib next to the star.71 A similar custom used to be observed in sections of central Europe, where the figure of the Christ Child was solemnly placed in the crib after the first Mass, while the people in church sang their ancient carols.72 Among the French people it is an old custom to hold a joyful family gathering and a traditional meal (reveillon) directly after midnight Mass. In Spain people promenade on the streets after the midnight Mass with torches, tambourines, and guitars, singing and greeting each other.73
