JEREMIAH--- A PROPHET FOR TODAY #2

Jeremiah For Today!

Chapters 5 to 9

CHAPTER 5

We now enter a number of chapters that over and over again
DENOUNCE the sins of Israel and Judah. During this time of 2008
as I write, when the election for the President of the United
States of America is in full swing, and emotions and expectations
are high once more, just as they were for the time when Bush was
elected for the White House (he's now going down in history as
the least popular President in the popular rate polls since
Richard Nixon [when he had to re-sign from being President]); to
say that our leaders are FAR from God, far from turning our
nations back to the true ways of the Lord, far from taking away
some gross sins such as abortion and same sex marriage, would
seem to most people as FANATICAL in perspective. That perspective
is still mild when you listen to how the Eternal speaks to Israel
and Judah through the book of Jeremiah.

God asks us to run through the streets of Jerusalem (hence
Judah - the Jews in the Holy Land) and see if you can find a man
that executeth JUDGMENT, that SEEKS TRUTH; if you can God says He
will pardon that city and the Jewish people. God says many may
say He lives, but in practicality they talk with falsehood. The
Lord's eyes are on the real truth of the matter. He has at times
stricken them, consumed them, in many different ways, BUT they
still will NOT be CORRECTED, they have made their faces harder
than a rock; they REFUSE to RETURN to Him. They are FOOLISH, they
know NOT the WAY of the Lord, nor the judgment of God. Some of
their old famous men did know the way of God, but the moderns
have broken that knowledge, they are corrupt and simply do not
know the ways of the true God of Israel. They have transgressed
in many ways and their backsliding has increased. God cannot
pardon them. The children have also forsaken the path of truth
and righteousness, and have moved into sexual sins as never
before, like neighing horses they have fallen into adultery and
into the harlot's house.
God says, "Shall I not visit with punishment for these
things; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?"
The answer is obviously YES He will punish (verses 1-9).

The DESTROYER is to come! But not to make a full end. Her
battlements are to be taken away, there will be no defence in
that day.
Is this just said to Judah? No, it is said to BOTH the House
of Israel and the House of Judah, for BOTH have dealt
treacherously against the Lord (verses 10-11).

Oh, you Jews, and you people of North-Western Europe and the
British Commonwealth and the United States of America, you may
say NO EVIL will be upon us, neither shall you see the sword or
famine: but your prophets shall become as wind, the word of truth
is not in them, so indeed they shall be taken away as with the
wind (verses 12-13).

This prophecy is for BOTH Judah and Israel. Listen O house
of Israel, a mighty nation, an ancient nation, a nation you do
not understand, they are mighty as their past history has shown
only too well during the 20th century, with starting two world
wars. They shall eat your fruit, they shall impoverish your
fenced cities with the sword (verse 17). This is the nation of
Assyria (the German people today) and God will again use them to
punish Israel and Judah (see Isaiah 10).

There will not be a full end. When they ask as to why this
punishment, it is for your serving false gods and forsaking the
holy ways of the Lord. So in serving strange gods you will serve
strangers in the land that is not yours (verses 18-19).

All this is to be declared in the House of Israel and
published in Judah (verse 20). Ah, yes, as Israel had already
gone into captivity decades before Jeremiah walked the streets of
Jerusalem, this is a prophecy not so much as for his day, but for
the time of the end, when Israel and Judah will FALL TOGETHER
under the heel of the modern Babylon the Great.

All the tribes of Israel are FOOLISH people, they have no
understanding, which means their leaders are just as foolish and
just as much without understanding. They are a people with eyes
but they see not, with ears but they hear not. Will you not fear
the God who sets the bounds of the sea and the sand? You are a
people that have a REVOLTING AND REBELLIOUS HEART! You will not
fear the One who gives the rain. Your iniquities and sins will
hold the good things from you; among you are found WICKED men,
like those who set a trap. You have perverts and bi-sexual, you
have homosexuals, you have child molesters, and all who seek
after the sins of wrong sexuality (verses 21-26).

We as a people are full of DECEIT, whereby many become waxen
rich in material wealth. We are FAT, we pass-over the deeds of
the wicked; we judge not as we should the cause of the fatherless
and the needy. Yes we do some things for such people, but obviously
it is not enough as God sees it. We will spend trillions of dollars
in Space exploits while we do not enough for the needy and the widows
and the orphans. Shall God not visit with punishment such a people?
Yes, He says He will!

Your prophets O Israel and Judah, do give false prophecy. Your
priests bear rule out of their own mind, and you love to have it
so. They tell you what you want to hear; the truth of God they
and you do not want. So what can you do to stop the end result of
it all? Nothing! (verses 27-31).

It is only a matter of TIME, the WHEN of God's punishment is
up to Him, but the certainty of it is only a matter of time. If
our nations will not REPENT of our sins we WILL face all that is
written. God is no respecter of persons. Many nations in past
history have FALLEN because of their sins and wickedness. It
shall come upon us as it came upon them!

CHAPTER 6

A prophecy directly to Zion and Jerusalem, hence the people
of Judah.

The daughter of Zion is to prepare for WAR, the dark of the
night is come and she is to be destroyed. It is Jerusalem that is
to be visited for as a fountain cast out its water so she is
casting out her wickedness; there is violence; before the Lord
there is continual grief and wounds. God cries out for her to be
INSTRUCTED, lest He make her DESOLATE, a land not inhabited. But
the Eternal One knows their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot
harken to Him. The Word of the Lord is a reproach to them; they
have no delight in it. So the Lord is weary of holding back His
fury, He will pour it out. All, young and old, man and woman,
will feel His anger. It must be so for from the least of them to
the greatest of them all are given to covetousness; from the
prophet to the priest every one deals falsely. They have tried to
heal the bruise of the people by saying, "Peace, peace; when
there is no peace" (verses 1-14).

The people of Judah and Jerusalem, are NOT ashamed of the
ABOMINATIONS of sin that they practice; they do not even blush;
so they shall indeed fall with those that fall: at the time God
says it is to happen it will come to pass (verse 15).

I have said it many times already. The people of the land we
call Israel today are SECULAR!! They are not even trying to
follow the ways of the Lord. They have rejected Him and His word,
they will not accept Jesus the Christ as Messiah, as their Lord
and King.
Some, like this Website, try to tell them to TURN and to
serve the Almighty, to walk in the good and perfect way so true
peace and rest they can have, but they WILL NOT DO SO! God then
says, "Hear, O earth: behold I will bring EVIL upon this people,
even the very thing they think about (war and death) BECAUSE they
will NOT harken unto My words, nor to My LAW, but they REJECT it!
(verses 16-19).

There will come a people from the NORTH country, a GREAT
NATION from afar. They will have the weapons of war; they are
cruel; THEY WILL HAVE NO MERCY; THEY ROAR LIKE THE SEA, THEY WILL
COME AS MEN OF WAR TO DESTROY JERUSALEM, to lay bare the daughter
of Zion (verses 22-23).

God tells the daughters of His people: "Gird you with
sackcloth, and wallow yourself in ashes: make ready to mourn, as
for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the SPOILER SHALL
SUDDENLY COME UPON YOU" (verse 26).
Why will the spoiler come? Because, "They are all grievous
REVOLTERS, walking with SLANDER: they are as BRASS and IRON; they
are all CORRUPTERS ... the WICKED are not plucked out of them.
People round about shall call them REPROBATE SILVER, because the
Lord will REJECT them (28-30).

Many may be saying the Lord is too hard on the people of
Judah and Jerusalem. Many will look and say are they not just
trying to live life as others do in other nations. And maybe that
is so, but they are not just anyone in any nation, they are the
children of Judah, one of the tribes of Israel called and chosen
to be a special people in the world, a people to show all others
the true ways of the true God. They are to be a light of
righteousness in a dark world. But they have REJECTED the
teachings of the Lord; they go about doing their own thing; they
have like the rest of Israel, thrown God out of the window,
rejected His LAW. They just live according to what seems right to
them, but that way ends in death and destruction. It will come,
for what a man sows that shall he reap.

CHAPTER 7

Jeremiah is now commanded to stand in the gate of the Lord's
house and proclaim:

"Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah, that have some
resemblance of religion. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,
AMEND YOUR WAYS AND YOUR DOINGS, and you will continue to live in
this place. Trust not in lying words, 'We are the temple of God,
the temple of God.' It is only by THOROUGHLY AMENDING your ways
and doings, executing JUDGMENT one with another and your
neighbor. If you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and
the widow, if you shed not innocent blood, neither walk after
other gods to your hurt. Then I will cause you to dwell in this
place, in the land that I gave to your fathers. But you trust in
LYING words, that cannot profit you. Will you steal, murder, and
commit adultery, and swear falsely, and worship and serve gods
that are no gods, then come and say to me, we have the freedom to
do these things, we will do anything we like to do" (verses 1-
10).

The CONTEXT of this chapter is in the time of Jeremiah, what
was taking place and what God was going to do to Judah and
Jerusalem, but it is still a lesson for us today. As they say
history often repeats itself IF people will not learn the lesson
of history. So as we read this prophecy set in the time frame of
the days of Jeremiah we still need to take it to heart, for the
same overall lesson applies to the Jews today who live in the
temple of God, the holy land, we call the State of Israel.

From the New-Living Translation:

11 "Do you think this Temple, which honors my name, is a den of
thieves? I see all the evil going on there," says the LORD. 12 "Go
to the place at Shiloh where I once put the Tabernacle to honor
my name. See what I did there because of all the wickedness of my
people, the Israelites. 13 While you were doing these wicked
things," says the LORD, "I spoke to you about it repeatedly, but
you would not listen. I called out to you, but you refused to
answer. 14 So just as I destroyed Shiloh, I will now destroy
this Temple that was built to honor my name, this Temple that you
trust for help, this place that I gave to you and your ancestors.
15 And I will send you into exile, just as I did your relatives,
the people of Israel."

Yes, the House of Israel had already gone into captivity
when Jeremiah was sent to warn Judah and Jerusalem. God is no
respecter of persons. Sin eventually brings destruction and
death. All empires, large or small, have faced the result of
their sins and their rebellion. In the original captivity of
Israel and Judah we had about 100 years between each of their
captive punishments, but in the last days, at the time of the
end, all prophecy shows BOTH Israel and Judah will fall TOGETHER!
We see here that PHYSICAL anything, does not win favor with God
over heart-felt obedience and walking in His true ways and
commandments.

Judah's Persistent Idolatry

16 "Pray no more for these people, Jeremiah. Do not weep or pray
for them, and don't beg me to help them, for I will not listen to
you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing throughout the towns
of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 No wonder I am so
angry! Watch how the children gather wood and the fathers build
sacrificial fires. See how the women knead dough and make cakes
to offer to the Queen of Heaven. And they give drink offerings to
their other idol gods! 19 Am I the one they are hurting?" asks
the LORD. "Most of all, they hurt themselves, to their own
shame." 20 So the Sovereign LORD says: "I will pour out my
terrible fury on this place. Its people, animals, trees, and
crops will be consumed by the unquenchable fire of my anger." 21
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Away
with your burnt offerings and sacrifices! Eat them yourselves! 22
When I led your ancestors out of Egypt, it was not burnt
offerings and sacrifices I wanted from them. 23 This is what I
told them: 'Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be my
people. Only do as I say, and all will be well!'"

Here is one of the key sections of Scripture that show
"animal sacrifices" were NOT originally a plan of God for Israel
to have as part of their worship towards the Lord Almighty. It
was ADDED because of their hard-heart and to give emphasis to SIN
and to that which is WRONG and CORRUPT and EVIL. The shedding of
animal blood was to give emphasis to the fact that SIN can only
be cleansed and washed away by the blood of the Messiah Savior.

24 "But my people would not listen to me. They kept on doing
whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their
evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward. 25 From the
day your ancestors left Egypt until now, I have continued to send
my prophets - day in and day out. 26 But my people have not
listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and
sinful - even worse than their ancestors. 27 Tell them all this,
but do not expect them to listen. Shout out your warnings, but do
not expect them to respond. 28 Say to them, 'This is the nation
whose people will not obey the LORD their God and who refuse to
be taught. Truth has vanished from among them; it is no longer
heard on their lips. 29 0 Jerusalem, shave your head in mourning,
and weep alone on the mountains. For the LORD has rejected and
forsaken this generation that has provoked His fury.'"

The Valley of Slaughter

30 "The people of Judah have sinned before my very eyes," says
the LORD. "They have set up their abominable idols right in my
own Temple, defiling it. 31 They have built the pagan shrines of
Topheth in the valley of the son of Hinnom, where they sacrifice
their little sons and daughters in the fire. I have never
commanded such a horrible deed; it never even crossed my mind to
command such a thing! 32 So beware, for the time is coming," says
the LORD, "when that place will no longer be called Topheth or
the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
They will bury so many bodies in Topheth that there won't be room
for all the graves. The corpses of my people will be food for the
vultures and wild animals, and no one will be left to scare them
away. 34 I will put an end to the happy singing and laughter in
the streets of Jerusalem. The joyful voices of bridegrooms and
brides will no longer be heard in the towns of Judah. The land
will lie in complete desolation.

CHAPTER 8

1 "In that day," says the LORD, "the enemy will break open the
graves of the kings and officials of Judah, and the graves of the
priests, prophets, and common people. 2 They will dig out their
bones and spread them out on the ground before the sun, moon, and
stars - the gods my people have loved, served, and worshipped.
Their bones will not be gathered up again or buried but will be
scattered on the ground like dung. 3 And the people of this evil
nation who survive will wish to die rather than live where I will
send them. I, the LORD Almighty, have spoken!

When God decides to punish there is no messing around as we
say, it is punishment that will bring much sorrow, pain, and
finally full and deep repentance.

Deception by False Prophets

4 "Jeremiah, say to the people, 'This is what the LORD says: When
people fall down, don't they get up again? When they start down
the wrong road and discover their mistake, don't they turn back?'
5 Then why do these people keep going along their
self-destructive path, refusing to turn back, even though I have
warned them? 6 I listen to their conversations, and what do 1
hear? Is anyone sorry for sin? Does anyone say, 'What a terrible
thing I have done'? No! All are running down the path of sin as
swiftly as a horse rushing into battle! 7 The stork knows the
time of her migration, as do the turtledove, the swallow, and the
crane. They all return at the proper time each year. But not my
people! They do not know what the LORD requires of them.

Knowing the ways and commandments of the Lord, knowing His
mind, having the mind of Christ in you, is the key to having God
walk with you. It would seem that when Israel and/or Judah fall
into sin they just cannot turn out of it. It seems to be our
nature that makes it extremely difficult to turn from sin once we
are deeply caught in its clutches. It would seem only HARD
PUNISHMENT gets the Israelites out of deceptive sin and a stiff-
hard-heart, towards correctly serving the Almighty One.

8 "How can you say, 'We are wise because we have the law of the
LORD,' when your teachers have twisted it so badly? 9 These wise
teachers will be shamed by exile for their sin, for they have
rejected the word of the LORD. Are they so wise after all? 10 I
will give their wives and their farms to others. From the least
to the greatest, they trick others to get what does not belong to
them. Yes, even my prophets and priests are like that. 11 They
offer superficial treatments for my people's mortal wound. They
give assurances of peace when all is war. 12 Are they ashamed
when they do these disgusting things? No, not at all - they don't
even blush! Therefore, they will lie among the slaughtered. They
will be humbled when they are punished, says the LORD. 13 I will
take away their rich harvests of figs and grapes. Their fruit
trees will all die. All the good things I prepared for them will
soon be gone. I, the LORD, have spoken!"

The ones who are supposed to be wise, the ones who are to
teach the way and law of the Lord, have FALLEN SHORT, they have
MISSED THE MARK, they have REJECTED THE TRUTH, they are as Jesus
said the blind who lead the blind, and both shall fall into the
ditch. Death and destruction shall come on all the leaders and
those who follow them, in their wrong way of life.

14 "Then the people will say, 'Why should we wait here to die?
Come, let's go to the fortified cities to die there. For the LORD
our God has decreed our destruction and has given us a cup of
poison to drink because we sinned against the LORD. 15 We hoped
for peace, but no peace came. We hoped for a time of healing, but
found only terror. 16 The snorting of the enemies warhorses can
be heard all the way from the land of Dan in the north! The whole
land trembles at the approach of the terrible army, for it is
coming to devour the land and everything in it - cities and
people alike.'

17 "I will send these enemy troops among you like poisonous
snakes you cannot charm," says the LORD. "No matter what you do,
they will bite you, and you will die."

Such is death, such is knowing you are sent to die for your
sins and rebellious ways. God will eventually punish the children
that He loves, to correct them, to bring them back to serving Him
in spirit and in truth. It is one of the great written lessons of
God dealing with Israel and Judah through the centuries. SIN
finally brings DEATH!

Jeremiah Weeps for Sinful Judah

18 My grief is beyond healing; my heart is broken. 19 Listen to
the weeping of my people; it can be heard all across the land.
"Has the LORD abandoned Jerusalem*?" the people ask. "Is her King
no longer there?" "Oh, why have they angered me with their carved
idols and worthless gods?" asks the LORD. 20 "The harvest is
finished, and the summer is gone," the people cry, "yet we are
not saved!" 21 I weep for the hurt of my people. I am stunned and
silent, mute with grief. 22 Is there no medicine in Gilead? Is
there no physician there? Why is there no healing for the wounds
of my people?

Do YOU weep at times for the sins of Israel and Judah today?

We have many terrible and huge sins ... crimes, killings, drugs,
drunkenness, sexual immorality, adultery, abortion,
homosexuality, lesbianism, same sex marriage, broken homes, hate,
violence, child abuse, and on and on it goes. We have an outward
form of religion but it has no power to make our nations live
closer to the way of the Lord. We have doctors, medicine,
hospitals, but there is no real healing of our hearts and minds.
The overall of the way our nations live has angered the Holy One.
He will have to punish us, a very severe punishment, to bring us
back to Himself in humble repentance.

CHAPTER 9

1 "Oh, that my eyes were a fountain of tears; I would weep
forever! I would sob day and night for all my people who have
been slaughtered. 2 Oh, that I could go away and forget them and
live in a shack in the desert, for they are all adulterous and
treacherous."

Judgment for Disobedience

3 "My people bend their tongues like bows to shoot lies. They
refuse to stand up for the truth. And they only go from bad to
worse! They care nothing for me," says the LORD.
4 "Beware of your neighbor! Beware of your brother! They all take
advantage of one another and spread their slanderous lies. 5 They
all fools and defraud each other; no one tells the truth. With
practiced tongues they tell lies; they wear themselves out with
all their sinning. 6 They pile lie upon lie and utterly refuse to
come to me," says the LORD.

7 Therefore, the LORD Almighty says, "See, I will melt them in a
crucible and test them like metal. What else can I do with them?
8 For their tongues aim lies like poisoned arrows. They promise
peace to their neighbors while planning to kill them. 9 Should I
not punish them for this?" asks the LORD. "Should I not avenge
myself against a nation such as this?"
10 "I will weep for the mountains and wail for the desert
pastures. For they are desolate and empty of life; the lowing of
cattle is heard no more; the birds and wild animals all have
fled.
11 "I will make Jerusalem into a heap of ruins," says the LORD.
"It will be a place haunted by jackals. The towns of Judah will
be ghost towns, with no one living in them."

12 Who is wise enough to understand all this? Who has been
instructed by the LORD and can explain it to others? Why has the
land been ruined so completely that no one even dares to travel
through it?

Are you friend wise enough to understand what the God of
Israel has here written and preserved? Can you see behind and
beyond the nice sounding politics of those who would desire to be
your leader of your Nation, your State, your Province, your Town
or City. Yes, they may be sincere, they may want to see good
things coming to pass, a better future, better prosperity, better
health, equal pay for equal work, a greener economy, peace and
not war. They may say all this, promise all this, yet they do NOT
have the heart or the mind to TURN our people BACK to serving the
Holy One of Israel in spirit and in truth. No matter who comes to
lead your nation, the downward slip into more sin and a moving
away from the Word of the Lord, is and will be, ever heading
down. Are you wise enough to see the picture as God sees it?

Why did it come on Judah in the days of Jeremiah? Why will
it come on us, at the time of the end? Here is why!

13 The LORD replies, "This has happened because my people have
abandoned the instructions I gave them; they have refused to obey
my law. 14 Instead, they have stubbornly followed their own
desires and worshipped the images of Baal, as their ancestors
taught them." 15 So now, listen to what the LORD Almighty, the God
of Israel, says: "Look! I will feed them with bitterness and give
them poison to drink. 16 I will scatter them around the world,
and they will be strangers in distant lands. Their enemies will
chase them with the sword until I have destroyed them
completely."

They were to be destroyed completely, the destruction was to
be full and complete, but not every single person was to be
destroyed.

Weeping in Jerusalem

17 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Think about what is
going on! Call for the mourners to come. 18 Quick! Begin your
weeping! Let the tears flow from your eyes. Hear the people of
Jerusalem (Heb. Zion) crying in despair, 'We are ruined! Disaster
has come upon us! We must leave our land, because our homes have
been torn down.'"
20 Listen, you women, to the words of the LORD; open your ears to
what he has to say. Teach your daughters to wail; teach one
another how to lament. 21 For death has crept in through our
windows and has entered our mansions. It has killed off the
flower of our youth: Children no longer play in the streets, and
young men no longer gather in the squares. 22 And the LORD says,
"Bodies will be scattered across the fields like dung, or like
bundles of grain after the harvest. No one will be left to bury
them."

23 This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man gloat in his
wisdom, or the mighty man in his might, or the rich man in his
riches. 24 Let them boast in this alone: that they truly know Me
and understand that I am the LORD who is just and righteous,
whose love is unfailing, and that I delight in these things. I,
the LORD, have spoken!"

Are you coming to KNOW the Lord more and more? Are you
growing in grace and knowledge? Are you understanding the mind
of God more each day as you study His word?

25 "A time is coming," says the LORD, when I will punish all
those who are circumcised in body but not in spirit 26 the
Egyptians, Edomites, Ammonites, Moabites, the people who live in
distant places, and yes, even the people of Judah. Like all these
pagan nations, the people of Israel also have uncircumcised
hearts."

Truly God is no respecter of persons. All nations will be
punished in time for their sins and for the way of living that
seems right in their eyes but which are the ways of death.

This is the lesson we need to get from the passages we have
read about the original destruction that was to come on Judah in
the days of Jeremiah. It is written for our instruction, it was
recorded (see Jeremiah 30:1-3) for the time will come once more
that Israel and Judah will need to be punished for their sins, to
again go into captivity, to once more be delivered from the lands
of their enemies, to be brought, with weeping and crying, with a
humble repentant heart, back to the land of promise, under the
mighty arm of the Messiah Christ Jesus, to be the delight of God
forever more.

CHURCHES THAT ABUSE #1

Churches that Abuse!!

It is out there STRONG as ever!!

                             RONALD M. ENROTH

                                     Written 1992

Preface

This has been a difficult book to write because it is a book
that is critical of other Christians. One always runs the risk of
being misunderstood and labeled "judgmen tal" or arrogant when
you make evaluative statements regarding Christian believers and
organizations outside your own immediate circle. The book is
about churches and other Christian organizations that inflict
psychological and spiritual abuse upon members through the use of
fear, guilt, and intimidation.
However, when we refuse to pass judgment on any religious
phenomenon for fear that such judgments might violate the norm of
tolerance so prevalent in our culture, we abdicate our
responsibility to the body of Christ to sound a warning where a
warning is justified. Some boats need to be rocked, even
Christian boats. The years of research that have gone into this
book have validated for me the truth of a placard I display in my
office: "Those who make it hardest to be a Christian in this
world are the other Christians."
I can safely predict that not one of the groups discussed in
these pages will agree that they deserve such mention. They will
protest that they have been unfairly portrayed, that I have
listened to "a few disgruntled former members" whose words should
not be trusted, and who are not representative of the membership.
Let me assure the reader that the information I convey in this
book is based not on my own fanciful imagination, but on the
actual experiences of real people whose accounts can be
independently verified and who, to the best of my knowledge, have
been truthful about their encounters with churches that abuse.
Despite the defensive protestations of authoritarian leaders that
exmembers of their churches lie, distort the facts, and are
"accusers of the brethren," there is abundant evidence that a
serious problem of abuse exists in the Christian community.
Researching and writing Churches That Abuse was often a
depressing experience because in recounting their days in abusive
environments, the survivors I talked with had to re-live the pain
and confusion, and, yes, the anger. Sometimes they were
embarrassed to admit that they had allowed these things to happen
to them. They felt the absence of understanding people willing to
help them "pick up the pieces."
It is my hope that this book will provide a context for
understanding. If we have basic information about a subject, we
can sometimes take preventative action. Regrettably, it is not
always possible to "get through" to people already caught up in
abusive churches. They do not see themselves as being
manipulated, or in any danger of spiritual abuse. Hence, the
frustration of parents, relatives, and friends who try to reach
or "rescue" them. There are no easy solutions to this problem.
In the final analysis, the book presents a hopeful outlook. Not
only can individuals leave abusive churches and achieve recovery
and restoration, but there are encouraging signs that some groups
are themselves recognizing the need for change and are moving
away from the fringe toward the center. May their numbers
increase.
It is customary for authors to say that without the help of
many people their books could not have been written. That is
especially true with regard to this book because so much of it is
comprised of case histories. My greatest debt of gratitude,
therefore, is to the dozens of individuals who have shared freely
with me their personal, often painful, odysseys in abusive
churches. Only a few of their stories can be told in these pages.
But each one has contributed to my understanding of the topic
and, hopefully, all will feel they have had a part in this
project. I have tried to convey as accurately as possible what
they have told me, but I alone am responsible for any errors.
My gratitude extends to the following people who each contributed
in various ways to the success of this effort: Jamey Robertson,
Kara Bettencourt, Rebecca Coons, Hubert Merchant, Betty Fleming,
John Rodkey, and Anne Anderson.
I owe special thanks to Kevin Liu, whose assistance was
invaluable, and for whom this book has unique meaning. I remain
grateful to Herbert and Louise Moeller and to David and Dore
Charbonneau for their years of encouragement. Warren and Barbara
Landon demonstrated stability and caring when I felt alone. Thank
you, friends.
I continue to be grateful to J. Whitney Shea, who many years
ago introduced me to sociology and modeled for me not only
scholarship, but Christian compassion and a steadfast faith.

INTRODUCTION

Abusive Churches: A View From Within

Pastor Phil was in the stands watching his team participate
in a church league softball game. The game was going great, but
for some reason Pastor Phil asked the coach to substitute a
number of men in the next inning. The coach complied but left the
assistant pastor in the game. This evidently infuriated Pastor
Phil. According to the (former) coach, "He called me with his
bull horn to come to the spectator stands immediately. He was
extremely angry and asked me why I had disobeyed him about the
substitutions, pointing out that the assistant pastor was still
in the game. Without any provocation on my part, Phil was
attempting to intimidate me publicly before many people. I was
stunned! His outrage continued for the rest of the evening as he
attacked me and the team members."
The following week Pastor Phil was unable to attend the ball
game, but he gave orders to play the game "backward." That meant
the players had to bat left-handed if they were right-handed and
vice versa. All field positions were switched so that everyone
was playing in an unfamiliar location. Since the pastor couldn't
be there, he sent someone with a camera to videotape the whole
game to make sure his decree was obeyed. The point of all of
this, he said, was to "humble" the team because they were getting
too proud from winning so many games. The team members were, in
fact, humiliated and embarrassed.
The coach later confronted Pastor Phil and told him that he
was shocked and offended by his behavior. "I pointed out that I
had always done what he had asked in regard to coaching any
teams, and that his sudden outburst of rage toward me was totally
uncalled for. His only response was that I did not obey him and
therefore was not submissive to him." The coach teamed later that
most, if not all, of the team members had gone to Pastor Phil and
apologized-even though they really had nothing to apologize for.
The scene was quite different a few weeks later when television
evangelist Paul Crouch and his wife Jan were present to watch
their son Matt play ball and to shoot a video spot for their
Trinity Broadcasting Network. Pastor Phil was now "Mister
Personality," greeting all of the players, cheering them on to
victory, calling the play-by-play action while the video cameras
rolled, giving "Jesus cheers," and focusing his attention on Jan
and Paul Crouch. At the end of the game, he gathered the team
members around him, and, ever mindful of the cameras, prayed and
thanked Jesus, tears rolling down his face.
Pastor Phil is the unquestioned leader at Set Free Christian
Fellowship in Anaheim, California. He likes to present the image
of being a "cool" pastor. No jacket and tie for him. Wearing the
obligatory sunglasses and earring, he leaps to the platform, his
dark hair pulled back into a pony tail, and grabs the microphone.
"I want to welcome you to Set Free Christian Fellowship-a place
where people who love Jesus come, a place where people who don't
know Jesus come, a place where people who want to find out about
Jesus come. And it's the place, too, where a few troublemakers
come, just to try to stir up trouble. I would point out a few of
them right now, but I won't. We'll let God take care of them,
amen?"
Then Pastor Phil invites his audience to "get high on
Jesus." "Jesus Christ can just bless your brain to bits," he
tells us. "Jesus Christ can make you fly. Jesus Christ can
totally set you free-this morning."
As I glance around the large, old warehouse that is the
setting for this 10 A.M. Sunday-worship service, I am reminded of
the informal atmosphere that characterized the so-called Jesus
People gatherings that I attended and wrote about in the late
1960s and early 1970s. In fact, I felt catapulted back into that
time frame this late October morning in 1990 as I joined the
largely youthful throng walking from all directions toward the
big old building with the words SET FREE emblazoned on its side.
Men from the church were directing auto and pedestrian traffic. A
few people warmly welcomed me as I approached the entrance.
Before the service begins, the sounds of a Christian rock band
announce to the visitor that this is no ordinary church. People
are noisily milling everywhere, searching for the hard-to-find
seats on the folding chairs cramped across the floor. Around the
sides and back of the building, bleacher seating is also rapidly
filling up.
The crowd of several thousand is composed primarily of young
adults, with some people in their middle years, but very few over
sixty. The audience is a mixture of Hispanics and whites, with a
scattering of blacks. Quite a few children are there, many of
them in the company of single mothers. Most of the folks at Set
Free this morning are casually dressed-shorts or jeans, a few
women displaying bare midriffs. What is especially noticeable is
the presence of many males dressed in biker garb-black motorcycle
vests and sleeveless denim jackets, some with "Jesus" inscribed
on the back. Others proclaim, "Trained to Serve Jesus at Set
Free." Beards on the men and heavy make-up on the women are the
norm. Except for the biker crowd, the atmosphere is again
reminiscent of the earlier Jesus People rallies, complete with
the "one-way" finger sign popping up here and there throughout
the audience.
The music is raucous and the crowd is enthusiastically
responsive. They love the rock 'n rap gospel music. They cheer,
whistle, and stomp when Pastor Phil says, "You don't have to wear
a holy face here." No sir, this is California casual. Pastor Phil
urges his audience, many of whom have backgrounds on "the
street," to feel at home, and to forget about hymnals and fancy
clothes. He promises us that we will not be hearing a three point
sermon. And no poems. Just sit back, relax and enjoy "The Lord's
Most Dangerous Band." "We're family," Pastor Phil reminds us.
Loud, upbeat music dominates the first half of the service. The
Set Free Gospel Choir is introduced and Phil banters with his
audience. "I'm gonna dedicate this in prayer for Mick Jagger that
he get saved; he might be able to sing here at Set Free one of
these days." The performers on the platform are "jumpin' for
Jesus." One of the female vocalists sports a broad-brimmed hat
that rivals the $1.98 special wom by Minnie Pearl of the Grand
Ole' Opry. Other performers wear Jesus T-shirts.
Just before testimony time, Pastor Phil brings on the
popular rap group, the Set Free Posse. He alerts the audience to
"listen up" for the "heavy" doctrine contained in the lyrics. For
those unfamiliar with the term "doctrine," he explains that in
"regular" churches it means "teaching." Then he announces the
title of the song: "Don't Be a Wimp!" "Wimp" is one of Pastor
Phil's favorite words. From the response of the congregation, it
is obvious that most of them know he is mocking traditional
churches and their concern for doctrine. It soon becomes apparent
how lightweight the lyrics are. The audience claps rhythmically
in approval. Everyone is having a fun time.
Just before his morning talk, Pastor Phil introduces two
young women who give dramatic testimony to Christian conversion.
One claims that her recent past had included involvement with
drugs and Satanic cults. She says that she had been a "breeder"
Satanist and that one of her babies was a victim of child
sacrifice.
Pastor Phil's talk is brief and undistinguished. He wants to
preach the simple Gospel in a way that relates to some folks that
conventional evangelical churches can't relate to or even
overlook. He is effective as he stands before the crowd with open
Bible in hand, informally commenting on several verses. At the
conclusion of his talk, he gives an altar call and quite a few
people file to the front for brief counseling and a prayer,
followed by an announcement that they are now in the family of
God.
Phil Aguilar, 43, does not fit the stereotype of the typical
evangelical pastor. He is an ex-convict, a former drug addict, a
"macho" man who rides a Harley Davidson motorcycle with a license
plate that reads, "BIKER PAS," for biker pastor. His dark glasses
and black leather are almost trademarks for a ministry that
includes outreach to bikers and gangs ("Servants for Christ") as
well as to miscellaneous street people and the homeless. As drugs
increasingly penetrate the middle class, Set Free tries to
minister to the young people from the more affluent suburbs. On
Sunday mornings cars of all descriptions and dozens of
motorcycles can be seen parked in the vicinity.
Set Free also operates a network of rehabilitation homes and
ranches. Several hundred church members live in a dozen communal
residences located in an area adjacent to the Set Free building.
The ministry operates about twenty additional houses nearby, two
of them owned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). Most of
Set Free's homes are leased at low rates from the City of
Anaheim's Redevelopment Agency. Mayor Fred Hunter, an ardent
supporter of Set Free, rents two houses he owns to Pastor Phil
and his Set Free Christian Fellowship.
The Set Free rehabilitation program also includes small
ranches located in Perris, California, one near Dallas, Texas,
and another near Chicago, Illinois. These ranches, plus the urban
residential program, involve approximately five hundred people.
And it is this segment of Set Free ministries-the rehabilitation
and communal dimension-that has stirred up controversy. Some
critics have questioned the nature of the rehabilitative effort,
the physical facilities themselves, and the lack of professional
oversight. But most of the concern has revolved around the
leadership style and suffusive influence of the man in black-Phil
Aguilar. Here is an account of what happened to one couple.
Tina and Art first joined Set Free Christian Fellowship in April
of 1987 because of drug and marital problems. They had hopes of a
restored marriage and of starting a better life together. Pastor
Phil Aguilar regularly appeared on the TBN network, announcing
that anyone with problems, either drug, alcohol, or personal,
could come to Set Free for counsel and assistance; no one would
be turned away.
Tina and Art did go to Set Free and they were not turned
away. However, by the time their stay at Set Free was over, they
had divorced, Art had lost his faith and left the ministry, Tina
had remarried one of Set Free's inner circle of leaders who took
her money and possessions for a drug binge and left her pregnant
and alone with four other children. All of this occurred with
Pastor Phil's knowledge, counsel, and blessing.
When Tina and Art first moved into the Set Free homes, they
were living together in the same house and had no thoughts of
separation or divorce. Soon, how ever, when they started to
argue, they were separated by Pastor Phil into different
households. They were not in agreement with this forced
separation, but they submitted to Pastor Phil's supposed wisdom
and discernment. According to Art, "instead of us getting
together to try to work out our problems, we got separated."
Art was also not allowed to see his own children without having a
permission slip. If he saw them at church, he could watch them
from fifty feet away but was not allowed to talk with them.
Feeling frustrated and powerless, Art watched his wife become
increasingly influenced by Pastor Phil. As a young Christian, she
could neither discern nor distinguish biblical truth from Set
Free doctrine. She drifted further and further from her husband
until, because she and Art "didn't get along," Pastor Phil
counseled her to get a "worldly divorce," since a "spiritual
divorce" was not possible without having committed adultery. Tina
says about her experience at Set Free, "When you first start to
get involved, you're so naive about things, and it's really easy
to fall into becoming part of Pastor Phil's 'clique,' especially
when you're just coming off of drugs and having a lot of
problems." Art adds, "At the time, Tina and I were new Christians
who didn't know very much about the Lord, and we could have
followed any kind of cult without even knowing it. There are a
lot of people out there who twist the Word around, and there are
a lot of false prophets."
At no time did Art and Tina ever receive counsel together,
nor did Pastor Phil ever pray or share the Scriptures with them.
Art asked many times to be able to sit down with his wife so they
could talk out their problems. Each time Pastor Phil would say
that they were not yet ready. Then he counseled the divorce that
neither of them wanted. Tina thought that this was God's word. If
Pastor Phil sanctioned the divorce, then it must be right.
Set Free claims that it ministers to many downtrodden
individuals with alcohol, drug, or relational problems. Few have
anything beyond a high school educa tion. Few are Christians
before coming to Set Free. According to former members and other
sources, Pastor Phil himself has only two semesters of Bible
school education and is very negative toward formal schooling.
The theological "Master's degree" that Set Free's official
spokesman claims Aguilar was awarded is in fact a certificate
from a correspondence school in Florida, called International
Seminary. Given this information, it is entirely understandable
how individuals like Tina and Art can be swayed by Phil Aguilar's
philosophy, doctrine, and practices. Tina says, "There were a lot
of things Phil kept me from doing, and, at the time, I thought it
was okay, but I just couldn't see what he was doing. I thought
what he was doing was good for my life, and I didn't realize how
bad it is to keep someone away from her family, or to keep
grandchildren from seeing their grandparents." Tina wanted to
leave Set Free several times. Each time she was told that she was
weak and that her return to drugs was inevitable. Despite the
internal struggle, she remained in the organization, fearing a
return to drug abuse and godlessness.
At the time of her divorce, Pastor Phil came to Tina and
told her that he cared for her, that he was with her, and that he
backed her all the way in her decision to get a divorce. He also
indicated that he wanted her to stay in Set Free forever and to
make a life for herself there with her children. His counsel to
her was to stay single for at least two years so that she could
get closer to the Lord and be near her pastor. So Tina ended up
living near Phil Aguilar and his family. He would frequently come
to her room to talk with her whenever she was feeling down, and
would tell her that she "trade beautiful babies and things like
that." Phil counseled her to tell her children that their father
was "backslidden and not doing the things of the Lord."
Tina ended up getting remarried in Set Free to Peter, who,
at the time, was one of Aguilar's lieutenants. She thought that
everything was fine, but deep down began to feel that something
was wrong. However, she didn't question too much because she
thought that since Phil Aguilar was a pastor, anything he did had
to be right. "I never questioned divorce and remarriage because I
thought Phil knew what he was doing and everything was okay."
Peter and Tina also ended up leaving Set Free because they
had planned on going to Hawaii for their honeymoon-without Phil's
permission. Phil caused most of their wedding and honeymoon plans
to be cancelled, and said that if they wanted to get sun or look
at palm trees that they could spend time in the backyard of one
of the Set Free houses. They ended up living in a single room
with four children. Shortly after the wedding, Peter and Tina
moved to another city, where Peter returned to drug abuse. In the
eleven months that they were married, Peter went on four drug
binges each of several days' length. The last time, he took
Tina's personal possessions and money. When he returned from the
last binge, he declared that he was going back to Set Free to
serve God. He left on a Wednesday and on Friday he was at TBN
doing phone counseling, something that Set Free members regularly
volunteer to do. After that, Tina started to question God, but
only, she says, "because I had made Phil my god. I couldn't
understand how a pastor could allow these things to happen. I
couldn't understand how Phil could allow my husband to be lifted
up again right after he had just ripped off his wife and had been
shooting up drugs for two days. I was pregnant at the time, and I
had to have all my utilities turned off because he had stolen all
my money and I wasn't able to pay our bills." The child was not
planned; Pastor Phil would not allow Tina to use birth control.
Peter was received with open arms upon his return to Set Free. He
was never counseled to take responsibility for his pregnant wife
and children. He did attempt to return to his family but was
ridiculed and mocked for. such sentiments. Phil said, "Peter, you
wimped out on me again." Tina and the children are still alone.
Tina's brother and mother became involved in Set Free during the
same period of time that Tina and Art were involved. All have
been devastated. Louise, Tina's mother, joined because of her
concern for her children and grandchildren. A daughter-in-law and
grandchildren are now lost to her. Robert, Tina's brother, went
to Set Free for help with drug abuse. At this writing, Robert's
wife and children are still very much a part of Set Free. He is
allowed to see them for only one hour on Sundays-but only at Phil
Aguilar's Set Free Christian Fellowship.
A former Set Free staff member, who came to the organization
from the outside and who was filled with idealism over the
possibilities for service, soon discovered nothing but
frustration.
"The whole emphasis at Set Free is the idea that everybody
should live in one community. However, at that particular point,
my wife and I had just sold our house and had begun living in an
apartment. Phil was constantly pressuring us to break our lease
on the apartment and move into the Set Free homes. At that time
they had twelve homes that housed about two hundred people. He
said if I would move in, I wouldn't have the responsibility of
having to raise any more support or have to work a part-time job
in order to pay my bills, and I could be there twenty-four hours
a day ministering and having the freedom to do what God called me
to do. He also pointed out that if I ever had to leave town for
any reason, my wife would have people to fellowship with. We
became convinced that it was the right thing to do. My wife and I
took that as being wisdom from the Lord and from our pastor, so
we broke our lease and mo-ed into the homes. We also sold most of
our possessions. And, thinking that we would be there for the
rest of our lives, we took our remaining possessions and
remodeled the home which we moved into. We gave them all of our
furniture, our refrigerator, and a variety of household goods."
This was the beginning of Pat and Kerry's ordeal as youth pastors
at Phil Aguilar's Set Free Christian Fellowship. During their
stay they feel they were "used" to lend an air of respectability
to the Set Free ministry, were tom apart as a family, were
systematically removed from responsibilities when they were
becoming too successful in the youth ministry, and suffered the
loss of Kerry's sister, Stacee, to the intense thought reform of
the group and to Aguilar's son, Geronimo.
Pat was a youth pastor at an Anaheim church when he met Phil
Aguilar. He was full of zeal for God, was considering full-time
ministry, and had numerous non traditional ideas that he believed
were needed in order to reach the youth of today. He was having a
hard time finding a church that would be willing to implement
activities that would make church exciting and a place where
young people could go and feel like they could belong twenty-four
hours a day.

Pat's father-in-law introduced him to Phil Aguilar. All that
they knew of Set Free at the time was that it was an inner-city
ministry that helped the poor and needy and reached out to the
afflicted and those in prison. According to Pat, "From the
outside, everything seemed to be exactly what I was looking for."
At their first meeting, Pastor Phil impressed Pat as being a very
charismatic type of person. "He was very lively and full of
enthusiasm. He was very non-traditional: an ex-gang member,
ex-drug addict, ex-con, a Harley Davidson biker who wore all
black, always wore his dark Ray-Ban sunglasses without taking
them off, had tattoos all over his body, and was of Mexican
descent." Pat shared with Pastor Phil his vision concerning youth
and his desire to open a youth center in Anaheim. He also shared
with him the fact that he had a possible invitation from a church
in Northern California to go and minister there. Aguilar declared
that Pat would not be going there, but that God was going to call
him to stay in Anaheim, and that he would ultimately be working
with Set Free.
Initially discounting Pastor Phil's predictions, Pat and
Kerry began attending Set Free, and, at first, it appeared to be
a "real Christian utopia." Phil would call Pat's family on stage
and introduce them as the "Boone family" or "the clean-cut
family." This was in a congregation consisting primarily of
ex-gang members, ex-drug addicts, and ex-alcoholics. Pat's family
was given exceptional treatment during that initial period, and,
over the course of weeks, began to grow very attached to Phil
Aguilar and Set Free. Then Phil offered to make Pat Set Free's
very first youth pastor. However, he would have to live by faith
and raise his own support.
Immediately after this offer, Pat and Kerry were
"coincidentally" visited by a member of Set Free with a word from
the Lord concerning their staying in Anaheim, as well as offers
of financial support. They were convinced they should stay at Set
Free.
For the first three months, life and ministry were great.
Pat was having great success, ministering to two hundred high
schoolers and being asked to consult with state agencies.
According to Pat, "Things were perfect, and we thought we had
found the place that the Lord had told us to go and spend the
rest of our lives." However, things changed once they decided to
move into the Set Free homes.
Although Pat was eventually appointed overseer of the three
main Set Free homes that housed about eighty persons, he and
Kerry began to notice inconsistencies in both the Set Free
Fellowship and in Phil Aguilar's life. The red lights began to go
on. Phil surrounded himself with non-educated and court-appointed
individuals needing supervision. Many could not read and depended
on Phil for teaching and the interpretation of Scripture. These
persons were not afforded any education at Set Free and,
according to Pat, they "literally fear Phil and they serve Phil."
New Christians would be sent to TBN (the Trinity Broadcasting
Network) to staff the telephone counseling lines-a "blessing"
that was required of Set Free members, even if they were not yet
completely free of their own addictions. Any questioning of
Phil's decisions or any indications of "irresponsibility"
resulted in a stay at "the Ranch," a five-acre dirt facility
outside of Perris, California, consisting of a few
ten-by-ten-foot modular rooms and an outdoor woodheated shower.
The times away from Set Free at the ranch were ordinarily set
aside for spiritual growth, a place where "you could go to be
closer to the Lord." But sometimes it was used just as a place of
punishment. Phil would separate parents and children by sending
young children, he would separate husbands and wives by sending
one or the other, and he would separate mothers, daughters,
brothers, and sisters. People put up with such treatment and
stayed with Set Free because many knew that if they left, they
would not have anywhere else to go.
Things were no more consistent with the Scriptures in
Aguilar's personal life, Pat soon learned. While claiming that he
had taken a vow of poverty and that he had had to move forty-two
times in his ministry, he would go out to eat lunch and dinner
frequently, wear fifty dollar shirts, outfit his children in
expensive shoes and clothing, and buy various accessories for his
motorcycles. Meanwhile, Pat and Kerry's weekly food budget for
the twenty-five persons in their communal house was two hundred
dollars. Phil also had access to many different motorcycles and
cars. He headed up car and motorcycle "ministries" and would give
motorcycles to devoted followers so that they could participate
in these church-sponsored "outreach" activities. To downplay his
expensive habits, Aguilar would dress in cutup t-shirts, shorts,
and army boots, according to Pat.
Perhaps reflecting on his own meager theological education,
and revealing his personal feelings of inadequacy, Pastor Phil
would sometimes comment that "the only thing worse than an old
Christian was an educated Christian." Yet, he would discipline
his followers by calling them "spineless wimps," "babies," or
"uneducated." He would sometimes ridicule and humiliate people in
public.
Personal quirks also resulted in inconsistency in practices
as well as doctrine. Persons seeking assistance at Set Free
received differential treatment according to their connections
with influential people and how much they could benefit Pastor
Phil. Pat's youth ministry was severely curtailed when the former
youth director, an influential and financially supportive woman,
wanted her position back. Pat and Kerry believed that their
family was being used as a public relations tool to further
Pastor Phil's ministry and offset his biker image.
Pat and Kerry's relationship with Kerry's parents was
severely strained to the point that, at the end of their time
with Set Free, they were told essentially that Kerry would have
to choose between her parents or the Set Free ministry. Kerry's
parents could only see their grandchildren when they worked as
nursery volunteers on Sunday. They were labeled as being a
hindrance to the work of God.
Kerry's sister, Stacee, is still a member of Set Free,
having married Phil Aguilar's son, Geronimo. She has been turned
against her family, and, on several occasions when visiting with
Stacee, Kerry and Pat have been told that they "stir up trouble"
and "cause division" by wanting to see her. They feel that Stacee
has succumbed to the "Christian macho" environment promoted by
the Aguilars. She is "supposed to treat her husband as if he were
the Lord," according to Pat. She was up, serving her husband food
and drink, hours after the birth of their first child. Her
husband does not participate in the care of the baby, preferring
to wait until the time the child can communicate with him.
Speaking of her brother-in-law, Kerry observes: "He continually
goes off and does whatever he wants, which usually doesn't
include Stacee." Stacee continues to defend and build up her
husband. A common complaint of former Set Free members is that
many of the men in the church treat women like doormats.
Phil allows no elders in the church, claiming that he alone is
responsible before God for all of his flock. Thus, internal
accountability is nullified. Also, as shepherd of the communal
flock, Phil requires permission notes for all aspects of life.
Pat was not allowed to oversee his family as husband and father,
but was expected to consult with Phil on all matters.
According to Pat, because of these and other areas of
disagreement, "I finally got to the point where I was about to
lose my wife and child. Kerry was being tormented psychologically
and was increasingly negatively affected by the ministry."
Eventually, Pat was taken to a football practice to be told that
he was being a "wimp" because he wasn't able to control his wife
and keep her away from her mother. He was told that he had to
decide whether he was going to be in control of his family and
"get some guts," or leave the ministry. After consulting with two
other Set Free leaders who also admitted that they had considered
leaving, Pat was told that if he was going to leave he must do so
very quietly so that he didn't stir up any problems.
One evening Pat and his wife did leave very quietly, but
when they returned to pick up their furniture, they found that
everything had been removed from their room and locked up. As
they began to load what was left of their belongings, Pastor Phil
came by to help them pack. Here is Pat's account of what
followed.
"I told him that he didn't have to help us. His response was
that the sooner he got us out of there the better. After we had
loaded everything, he began to verbally attack me, hoping to get
me to physically attack him. He began to discredit me by calling
me a spineless wimp and a baby. He said that I was sowing discord
in the ministry and causing other people to leave. When I
responded using Scripture, he didn't answer, but continued to
belittle me in front of my wife and all the people in the homes.
I am sure he was trying to provoke me to anger so that I would
physically attack him. That would prove to all the observers that
I was indeed an `outlaw,' which is Set Free jargon for a
backslider or a rebellious person."

Six months after Pat and Kerry left to become involved in
another Christian ministry elsewhere in the state of California,
they returned to Set Free to visit Kerry's sister, Stacee, who
was now pregnant with her first child. Phil eventually showed up
and the first thing he said to Pat was, "Hello, el wimpo. Wimpo
is back in town." He came up to Pat, gave him a hug, and asked
him what he was doing there. "I told him that I was just visiting
and then he told me that I better leave right away. He again said
that I was trying to sow discord. He called me a loser and a
spineless wimp. He proceeded to inform me how God wasn't doing
anything with my life and how miserable I was. He said that my
family life was down the tubes and that was the reason I was back
in town. After a few more minutes of his verbal abuse, Phil's
secretary, Lois, joined in and began to tell, me that I was
treading on dangerous ground. She said that if I continued to act
that way toward Phil, God would probably take my life because I
was messing with a man who was anointed by God."
As Pat tells it, Phil became even angrier. "He started to
pat me on the head and make some kissing gestures at me. Then he
came up and kissed me right on the lips and said, `Now what are
you going to do about that?"' Pat told Phil that he would pray
for him because he was really confused_ and: that God was going
to deal with him severely if he chose to continue on his present
path. That was the last time Pat and Kerry saw Pastor Phil
Aguilar.
It is Pat's opinion that "Phil Aguilar is a very confused
individual who is selfish, chauvinistic, prideful, jealous,
arrogant, and extremely authoritarian. He will do anything to
advance his organization, his ministry, or his business." Before
Phil became a Christian, he was nicknamed "King Cobra." The day
that e kissed Pat on the lips, Pat remarked that the "Cobra" had
never died, but still lived on. Pastor Phil turned, looked at
Pat, and walked away.

This book is about people who have been abused
psychologically and spiritually in churches and other Christian
organizations. Unlike physical abuse that often results in
bruised bodies, spiritual and pastoral abuse leaves scars on the
psyche and soul. It is inflicted by persons who are accorded
respect and honor in our society by virtue of their role as
religious leaders and models of spiritual authority. They base
that authority on the Bible, the Word of God, and see themselves
as shepherds with a sacred trust. But when they violate that
trust, when they abuse their authority, and when they misuse
ecclesiastical power to control and manipulate the flock, the
results can be catastrophic. The perversion of power that we see
in abusive churches disrupts and divides families, fosters an
unhealthy dependence of members on the leadership, and creates,
ultimately, spiritual confusion in the lives of victims.
And victims they are. In this book you will meet some of the
casualties of spiritual abuse. They will tell you in their own
words why they were attracted to authoritarian religious groups
and what the impact of that involvement has meant. They will
share the pain of leaving an abusive church and the struggle to
readjust to life on the "outside." For many of them, life in an
allencompassing Christian environment has been so devastating
that they find it difficult sometimes to read their Bibles,
attend church, or even believe in God.
Much has been written about battered wives and child abuse.
Here you will read about battered believers and abused
Christians. The people in this book, for the most part, define
themselves as born-again Christians.
The churches and leaders that abused them are evangelical or
fundamentalist in theological orientation. However, churches that
abuse are on the margins, or just outside the circle, of the
mainstream evangelical subculture as it exists in North America.
That is, they would not ordinarily seek membership in
organizations like the National Association of Evangelicals or
financially support missionary and humanitarian organizations
such as World Vision International. Their children would not
participate in Young Life or Youth for Christ, and they would not
encourage their young people to attend mainstream evangelical
colleges like Westmont and Wheaton, or even Bible schools like
the Moody Bible Institute. Their pastors would not read
Christianity Today magazine.
I have spent several years researching this book and have
interviewed hundreds of abuse victims in order to learn about
their experiences. I have also talked with many other people
whose lives have touched former and current members. I have used
a tape recorder consistently, but not always. As much as possible
in this book, I want to convey the feelings, the attitudes, and
the experiences of the people themselves - in their own words - a
view from the inside. There will be a minimum of analysis and
commentary. In terms of methodology, my mentor is Harvard social
psychiatrist Robert Coles, author of the celebrated series
Children of Crisis. Like him, my aim is "to approach certain
lives, not to pin them down, not to confine them with labels, not
to limit them with heavily intellectualized speculations but...
to approach, to describe, to transmit as directly and sensibly as
possible what has been seen, heard, grasped, felt...."

Each chapter contains one or more case studies as well as
anecdotal material from interviews and other sources.
Occasionally I have presented a composite case history; that is,
I have combined two or three people into one individual.
Sociologists are concerned about the validity and reliability of
their data. I feel that the case studies presented here are
reasonably representative. I believe that the people who shared
their experiences with me were being truthful and I am equally
certain that the leaders of their former churches would assert
that these ex-member accounts are exaggerated or, at the least,
distorted. Although I did not use formal questionnaires and do
not claim that my findings have any "statistical significance," I
feel that I have identified patterns of behavior that can be
independently verified using standard behavioral-science
methodology.
In addition to employing informal, in-depth interviews of
former members, I have visited some of the churches mentioned,
listened to countless hours of taped sermons and talks by the
pastors under discussion, and talked with relatives and friends
of individuals who are currently members of such groups. Whenever
possible, I have attempted to interview those in leadership. In
all but a few instances, I identify the pastors and churches
referred to in this book by their actual names. The names of all
former members have been changed.
Sociologists look for patterns in human behavior and in
social institutions. As you read the following pages, a profile
of pastoral and spiritual abuse will emerge. Abusive churches,
past and present, are first and foremost characterized by strong,
control-oriented leadership. These leaders use guilt, fear, and
intimidation to manipulate members and keep them in line.
Followers are led to think that there is no other church quite
like theirs and that God has singled them out for special
purposes. Other, more traditional evangelical churches are put
down. Subjective experience is emphasized and dissent is
discouraged. Many areas of members' lives are subject to
scrutiny. Rules and legalism abound. People who don't follow the
rules or who threaten exposure are often dealt with harshly.
Excommunication is common. For those who leave, the road back to
normalcy is difficult.

The patterns of abuse, the mechanisms of response and
coping, and the similarities in outcome have become clear to me
as I have attempted to understand the phenomenon of authoritarian
churches. At times, when hearing a person's odyssey for the first
time, I am tempted to say, "Stop, let me tell you the rest of the
story." I am reminded of a comment made by Robert Coles regarding
his research experience. He notes that "some observations and
considerations keep coming up, over and over again-until... they
seem to have the ring of truth to them. I do not know how that
ring will sound to others, but its sound after a while gets to be
distinct and unforgettable to me " 2

A Shepherd looks at the GOOD SHEPHERD

The One true Sheepfold

                                      by

SETTING THE STAGE

BEFORE WE BEGIN our study of this section of Scripture it is
essential to set the stage on which our Lord stated the three
parables contained in John 10. Only in this way can we comprehend
clearly the truths He was teaching.
His own contemporaries, those to whom He addressed these
ideas, were totally baffled by them. In fact, His hearers were so
bewildered that some accused Him of being mad, or under the
control of an evil spirit. They insisted that such statements as
He made deserved death by stoning.
On the other hand there were those who, having just seen Him
restore sight to the young man born blind, felt sure that what He
said contained truth. It was bound to, since He could perform
such miracles.
So it was that a storm of controversy raged around Christ.
People were polarized by His parables. Some said He deserved to
die. Others hailed Him as a Savior.

Down the long centuries of time since that desperate day in
which He declared Himself to be the Good Shepherd, the
controversy has continued over what He really meant. Scholars,
teachers, theologians, academics, and preachers have all applied
themselves to this passage of Scripture. Commentaries and books
of various kinds have dealt with these parables. The diversity of
views, and explanations given, leave one almost as perplexed as
the people of Jesus' own time.
Consequently it is no easy thing to be invited to do a book
on John 10. Yet it has been undertaken in humility and with the
full knowledge of what others have written previously. It is not
intended to discredit what has been drawn from these parables by
other teachers. They are fully entitled to their views. But it
should be said at the outset that the approach which I have taken
is a very distinct, personal one. It is based, not on the concept
of the nation Israel, referred to in the Old Testament as God's
flock, the people of His fold; nor on the New Testament emphasis
of the church being Christ's little flock; but rather on my
simply belonging to Him as an individual.
The reasons for this are neither theological nor doctrinal.
They are the practical realities of the setting and events in
which these statements were made by Christ. And if, with open
minds and gently receptive spirits we look at what transpired
during the days immediately preceding this passage, it will be
seen that the personal approach is valid.
Jesus was nearing the end of His public life. An increasing
hostility was building up against Him from the ecclesiastical
elite of His time. The religious leaders of His day felt
threatened by His enormous popularity and appeal to the common
people. The plain people applauded Him openly. His winsome words
drew them with magnetic and positive power.
This continuous polarization around Christ created a
constant storm center of controversy. The Scribes, Sadducees, and
Pharisees tried every tactic to attack Him whenever He appeared
in public. The masses on the other hand came to love Him with
great affection. His healing, helping, and heartening life had
restored and lifted so many of them.

He entered Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles,
or Booths, with His men. It was a festival commemorating
Jehovah's care of His people during their long wilderness
wanderings after their exodus from Egypt. The Master immediately
came under attack. In John 7 we see some claiming Him to be a
"good man"; others insisting He was a "deceiver." And they would
have lynched Him, if they could, but His hour of arrest had not
yet come.
Then, on the last day of the feast He was assailed again.
Some asserted He was truly "the Christ." His antagonists on the
other hand claimed that Christ could not possibly come from
Galilee. Officers were sent to arrest Him but failed to do so,
declaring instead, "never man spake like this man!" So once more
He was spared from the clutches of His opponents.

On the next day (the 8th day or the last Great Feast day -
Keith Hunt) He returned to the city and was confronted by the
Scribes and Pharisees with a young woman caught in an illicit
sexual relationship. She was to be stoned, but to bait Jesus the
frightened girl was brought to Him. Instead of condemning her, He
forgave her but instructed her to go and sin no more.
The girl's accusers were furious. They engaged in a dreadful
diatribe with Jesus in which He insisted upon His oneness with
the Father. For this they again determined to stone Him to death.
Yet He eluded them and escaped. All of this is described in John
8.
Later He was met by a man blind from birth. In a remarkable
manner He touched the sightless eyes and the blind man saw when
he went to bathe them in the pool of Siloam, as instructed. Out
of deep gratitude the healed man gave glory and praise to his
benefactor. This precipitated another angry controversy with the
religious skeptics and leaders.
Because he believed in the Christ the poor fellow was
excommunicated from the religious life of his people. Jesus met
him again and declared His own identity. The healed man was
ecstatic and overwhelmed with adoration.
But to the Pharisees our Lord declared bluntly that they
were both blind and steeped in sin and self-righteousness. All
their religiosity had done them not one bit of good.

It is on this pathetic theme that John 9 concludes.
In blazing, bold contrast, Christ had personally touched and
entered both the lives of the young adulteress and this
supposedly sinful, blind man. He had brought them into an
intimate, new relationship of abundant living with Himself.
Put into the language of the New Testament, these two individuals
had discovered what is meant by "Christ in me," and "I in
Christ." They had both entered into that dynamic new dimension of
living which Christ Himself later referred to as "[Abiding] in
me, and I in you."

(And, note again, it was the Last Great Feast day that this all
took place. The time when the multitudes of the spiritually
blind, who were not called to repentance in their life time, will
be raised in the White Throne Judgment day of Revelation 20, and
be given the Bible and the book of life will be opened to them.
They will see the truths of God. They will be given a chance of
seeing salvation laid before them. If they will, their blinded
eyes of the mind will see the Great Shepherd, and they will
accept Him as their personal Savior - Keith Hunt)

To depict and dramatize this remarkable relationship with
Himself He then proceeded to tell the three parables of the
Shepherd and His sheep in the next chapter.

By contrast, in Psalm 23, David the author writes from the
standpoint of a sheep speaking about its owner. In John 10 the
approach is the opposite. Our Lord, Jesus the Christ, here speaks
as the Good Shepherd. He describes His relationship to His sheep;
we, the common people, who have come into His ownership and under
His care.

WHAT IS A SHEEPFORLD?

It is an enclosure open to the wind. It is an enclosure open
to the scrutiny of the owner. It is an enclosure not covered in,
roofed over, or shielded from the eyes of the shepherd.
It is not a barn, shed, or closed-in structure.
Its walls, open to the sun, the sky, stars, rain, and wind
may be made of rough-laid stones, sun-dried bricks, timber, mud
and wattle, or even tightly packed thorn brush, called a corral
in some places, a kraal in others, and a boma in parts of Africa.
The main purpose of the sheepfold is to provide protection
for the sheep - especially at night and in stormy weather. Its
high thick walls are a barrier that prevents thieves or, to use a
modern parlance, rustlers from invading the flock to plunder the
defenseless sheep.
The enclosing walls are also a safeguard for the sheep
against all sorts of predators. These vary, depending upon the
country in which the sheep are kept. In some areas it is a case
of keeping out wolves or jackals. In others, especially parts of
Africa, lions, leopards, and even hyenas are guarded against.
Even then, despite the barricade of thorn brush, there are
occasions when predators will prowl around a sheepfold stealthily
searching for some spot where they can leap over the enclosure to
capture and kill their prey. This produces panic among the flock.
The carnage is terrifying and the losses among the flock can be
enormous. For the sheep owner the raids on his sheep represent
serious financial reverses which may take years to recover.
I had a neighbor whose flock was raided one night by a
cougar. By daybreak more than thirty of his finest ewes lay dead
on the ground. Fences and walls had been cleared by the powerful
predator without it ever passing through a gate or open door.

"Sheepfold," besides being the name for an enclosure where
sheep are generally kept at night, is also a term for managing
sheep. In sheep countries we often speak freely of "folding"
sheep. By that we mean the much wider sense in which a flock of
sheep are said to be "enfolded" by a certain owner or sheepman.
The sheep come under his special management and his direct
control continuously. He folds his flock exactly as he sees fit
in order that they will flourish and prosper under his care.
Folding sheep is another way of saying a shepherd is managing his
flock with maximum skill. It is to say that he handles them with
expertise, moving them from field to field, pasture to pasture,
range to range in order to benefit them as much as he can, as
well as to enhance his own land.

So a sheepfold conveys the idea of the special relationship
a sheep has to the ownership and care of a certain shepherd. And
when our Lord, who referred to Himself as the Good Shepherd spoke
these parables, He saw the overall picture of the unique
relationship between Himself and His followers - between Himself
and those who had come under His good hand for the management of
their lives.

He begins this first parable by asserting that anyone who
forces a way into the "sheepfold" other than by the proper
doorway or entrance may be a thief or robber. In other words, He
is saying that my life is a sheepfold to which He alone, the Good
Shepherd, is the rightful owner.
Within the fold of my life there are all kinds of people who
come in and out. There are the members of my immediate family
circle, my wife, children, grandchildren, cousins, or more
distant relatives. Then there are friends, neighbors, business
associates, schoolmates or strangers who from time to time pass
in and out of the circle of my life.
In reality none of our lives are totally closed in, roofed
over, and so completely sealed and safeguarded as to forestall
the entry of others. Each of us is a sheepfold in our own
private, individual way. We are within a fold, a circle, a life,
which really cannot be roofed over.
It is true some of us may have high walls of self-defense
erected around us. We may even go so far as to try and enclose
ourselves completely to forestall invasion from others, and we
may feel we have actually succeeded in this. However, we may fool
ourselves into believing that we can withdraw into our own
secluded little domain where we are exempt from the entrance and
intrusion of others.
Christ's assertion is that in fact this is simply not
possible. It is true I am in an enclosure. It is true I live
within a limited circle which, however, is shared by others who
enter it. But over and beyond this my life is surrounded and
enfolded by the encircling care and provision of a providential
God. Nor is it closed off from His loving care and concern. It is
in fact wide open to the wind, the wind of His gracious Spirit.
There is no way He can be kept out, any more than the wind
blowing across the countryside can be kept out of an open
sheepfold.
The truth that there is no one anywhere who can escape or
elude the coming of God's Spirit, is portrayed in exquisite
detail in Psalm 139. There is no way known to man in which he can
prevent the gracious presence of God's Spirit from making an
impact on the fold of his life. We are surrounded by Him; we are
found by Him; we are touched by Him. His impact is upon us. We
are beneath the influence of His hand ... His person ... His
presence!

O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my
downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought
     afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art
     acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou
knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before,
and laid thine hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot
attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit?
or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up
into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell,
behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning,
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there
shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the
night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth
not from thee; but the night shineth as the day:
The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
     (Ps.139:1-12)

In the light of all this we must conclude quietly that though we
may be able to exclude others from our lives, to a degree, we
cannot do this with Christ. He comes to us again and again
seeking entry.

(True, IF you are being called of God. What Keller did not
understand is that God is NOT calling everyone to Himself in this
life time. Psalm 139 was from David, a man called of God to be
His child. Then indeed there is no hiding from Him anywhere. The
truth of the matter is that the Lord is NOT giving salvation to the
masses. Most today are spiritually blind, only the election
of grace can know the Good Shepherd. See Romans 9 through 11.
There is a plan of salvation being worked out by the Father. All
will have a chance for salvation in the time frame that is of
God. This plan of salvation is fully explained and expounded upon
in studies on this Website - Keith Hunt)

He does not force His way in. He does not gate-crash my life
or yours. He chooses to enter by the proper entrance which is
really His privilege. Yet He is so gracious in requesting our
cooperation in this.
Still, in fear and apprehension we often exclude Him, while
at the same time, unknowingly, we are invaded by adversaries.
Many who force their way into my life, who slip in by means
that are cunning, who impose themselves by devious and
destructive tactics; often are bent on deceiving and destroying
me. They are thieves and predators who are determined to plunder
and exploit me as a person for their own selfish ends.
We live in a world and society rife with those who hold and
propagate false teachings, false philosophies, false ideologies,
false concepts, false values, and false standards of behavior. We
are approached on every side by those who would penetrate our
lives to pillage them if they could. Their aim is to exploit us.
They would rob us of the rich benefits which could be ours as the
sheep of God's pasture.

(Yes, when called by God, Satan the Devil often works overtime,
sending and doing his best to side-line us, to prevent the Spirit
of the Lord from leading and teaching us, so we move from being
called to being chosen. There is a full study on this Website
entitled "Called and Chosen - When?" - Keith Hunt)

Sad to say that in many lives they have actually succeeded.
People have been pillaged. Countless lives have been robbed by
the enemy posing as proper owners. Yet in those same lives, in
those very sheepfolds, the door has never been opened to the Good
Shepherd who really does have the right to enter, and who in
truth is entitled to their ownership and care.
This is one of the enduring enigmas of human behavior that
is so baffling. We human beings will allow all kinds of strange
ideologies and philosophies to permeate our thinking. We will
allow humanistic standards and materialistic concepts to actually
rob us of the finest values that would otherwise enrich us. We
permit false aims and ambitions to penetrate our thinking and
dominate our desires, scarcely aware that in so doing we are
forfeiting the richest values our Good Shepherd intended for us.
On every side we see people robbed, not necessarily of
materialistic possessions, but of the much more enduring assets
of eternal worth and duration.

(Jesus did say indeed, many are called but few are chosen. Many
called ones are robbed from moving on by the cares of the world,
the physical riches of the world, the pleasures of the world, the
whatever of the world; anything that prevents us from having the
Good Shepherd enter fully into our lives, our hearts, our minds -
Keith Hunt)

The simple solution to this whole dilemma is to discover for
ourselves that in truth the only One who really has a right to
manage the fold of my life is not myself, but God.
Most of us labor under the delusion that we have every right
to our lives; that we have the right to go where we wish, do as
we please, live as we choose, and decide our own destiny. We do
not. We belong to God. He made us for Himself. He chose us in
Christ out of love, from before the foundation of the earth to be
His own. He has bought us twice over, both through His generous
death and also by His amazing resurrection life.
Every faculty I possess in my body, mind, emotions, will,
disposition, and spirit has been entrusted to me as a gift,
bestowed by the bounty of a generous, gracious, self-giving,
self-sharing God in Christ. There is no such thing as a
"self-made" man or woman. To assert this is colossal conceit of
the first magnitude. It is an affront to the living Lord who
alone has a rightful claim on me. Even the total earth
environment, the biota, of which I am a part, and which sustains
me during my brief earth sojourn is God's doing. Only at His
pleasure is it maintained in perfect balance and poise. It
provides the precise support mechanisms which insure my survival
upon this sphere in space.

Now Christ is the visible expression of the invisible God.
He was before creation began, for it was through him that
everything was made, whether heavenly or earthly, seen or unseen.
Through him, and for him, also, were created power and dominion,
ownership and authority. In fact, all things were created
through, and for, him. He is both the first principle and the
upholding principle of the whole scheme of creation.
(Col. 1:15-17, Phillips).

In view of the fact that all of life originates with Christ
we should be able to see the reasonableness of admitting His
ownership of us. We ought to discern the inescapable conclusion
that He is entitled to enfold us with His loving care and
concern. We should recognize the fact that He is fully and
uniquely qualified to manage us with a skill and understanding
far surpassing our own.

In spite of all this He does not insist on imposing Himself
upon us. He does not override our wills. He refuses to rush into
our experience by gate-crashing His way over our decisions.
Having made us in His own likeness, free-will agents able to
choose as we wish, whether or not we shall be His sheep, enfolded
in His care, is ultimately up to us. This is a staggering
decision facing each individual.
The amazing generosity of Christ in so approaching us stills
our spirits and awes our souls before Him. Yet at the same time
He insists anyone else who attempts to invade my life as an
imposter, a counterfeit shepherd, is in truth none other than a
thief and a robber ... a plunderer of my life who will impoverish
and cripple me.

                            ...................

To be continued

NOTE:

This is all so true, and especially so true when God is calling
you to hear the Gospel and when you then can decide if you will
accept the call and move into God's realm of being CHOSEN!

By reading from this Website you are certainly being called to
hear the Gospel of Christ, and the Kingdom of God, which will
come to this earth, in the age yet to come. I pray you will go on
to accepting the Good Shepherd as your personal Savior, and so be
one of His sheep. You will then inherit eternal life when Jesus
the Shepherd comes again; you will help Him rule the world for a
thousand years, and then live with the Father in the new earth,
as told to us in Revelation chapters 21 and 22.

KNOWING GOD #36--- LAST BUT MORE

KNOWING the True God #36

The Last Chapter ... but more...

                             WHO ARE YOU, GOD?

by Dawn Yrene

Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the
rest, they burned them.... Then the LORD turned from his fierce
anger" (Joshua 7:25,26). Now there's a verse I've never written
on a three-by-five card.
What about you? Have you ever read the Bible and overlooked
information that didn't fit neatly into your personal theology?
Is it possible you do it without even noticing?

We all enjoy meditating on life-giving scripture verses like
Philippians 4:6,7 or Psalm 23. But we may nervously skim past the
instructions God gave to the Israelites in Joshua or Judges to
kill this or that group of people.
Even when I have not totally ignored uncomfortable verses, I
have been tempted to de-emphasize them. While it is not wrong to
emphasize passages that make sense or minister deeply to me,
there is a danger in ignoring aspects of God's character so that
He fits my personal image of Him.
I was doing exactly that during a dry spell in my walk with
God. While reading the first chapter of Judges, I was disturbed
at practices such as cutting off people's thumbs and big toes,
pressing captives into forced labor, and offering daughters to
those who captured cities. Those things just seemed bad. I also
couldn't understand God. Often He blessed those who annihilated a
city, but rebuked those who left survivors.
Instead of jumping over to the Psalms, I cried out, "Who are
You, God?" As always, the Spirit was ready with an answer. I
began to write down every piece of information the passage
offered about God.
Some of it was basic, but I listed it anyway. I also wrote
down information that did not fit my preconceived notions about
God. As I wrote, my dry Old Testament time, which had seemed like
an obligation, transformed into a bold experience - more like
finding clues to a mystery than performing a daily ritual. I was
getting to know God. He was still the same kind Physician who had
healed my dog when I was eight, the same artistic Genius I could
not doubt when I viewed creation, and the same patient Father who
led and protected me even through my questioning and rebellious
college years. But He was so much more!

Recently while in the book of 1 Chronicles, I skimmed over
name after genealogical name, then tried asking, "Who are You,
God?" Here's a step-by-step example of how I studied 1 Chronicles
13 using that simple question.

Start with prayer.

I express my desire to see God's character, what He loves,
what He hates, how He relates to people, why He included these
phrases in His Word, and anything else He desires to reveal to
me.

Read the passage.

After reading all of 1 Chronicles 13, I focused on verses
7-11. David and a group of men are moving the ark to the City of
David. They're celebrating and praising God with all their might.
An oxen stumbles; a man touches the ark to steady it. God becomes
angry, and the man dies on the spot. David then gets angry at
God. Out of fear, he leaves the ark with a local family.
List what you can observe about God. I include things I've
heard before, as well as information I've never considered. Here
is my list:

* God gets angry.
* He considers certain objects holy - specifically, the ark.
* He sometimes strikes people dead.

List what you can deduce about God.

For instance, a passage may not say, "God loves." but God's
actions may demonstrate His love. I'm careful not to assume
things; I try to stick to facts. For this passage, I will add to
my list:

* When God gives an instruction, He expects it to be followed
precisely.
* Even when people are worshipping Him, He may choose to
discipline those who ignore or disobey His laws.

Look up the corresponding verses listed in your Bible's
cross-reference notes.

Do they explain why God reacted a certain way? Do they
clarify any uncertainties? In Numbers 4:15, for
example, God states, "They [the Kohathites] must not touch the
holy things or they will die." Now I add to my list:

* God gave a clear warning before striking a man dead.
* God does not react in strange and unpredictable ways with
people. He makes Himself clear, or at least He does in this case.
(I will have to study more to see if He always gives clear
instructions.)

Include what God does not do.

God does not do anything in verse 11. But can His inaction
teach me about His character? David is now angry at God and
doesn't understand why God reacted as He did. What God doesn't do
to David teaches me that He doesn't strike people dead or punish
them just for being angry at Him. I can add that to my list. He
also doesn't send an angel to explain to David why the man had to
die. On my list I write:

* God doesn't always explain Himself.
* However, in order not to box in God, David did not ask for an
explanation.

Allow His character qualities into your worship.

After moving through a passage in this manner, I speak to
God about what I've discovered. Is He to be feared as well as
adored? Do I feel more thankful for the new covenant Jesus made
through His blood? I affirm that God is merciful but also that He
expects obedience. He is forgiving, but He is not lax. He heals,
but He also destroys.

Seeing God

Even in the dustiest places in Scripture, we may find a
hidden gem about the God who created all we see, gave freedom for
all to choose, made Himself nothing so that all who would follow
Him could become something, and placed it all within our grasp in
His recorded Word.
As we see God for who He really is, we'll be more prepared
to fit into His plans and live life His way, casting aside the
old boxes into which we may have tried to squeeze Him.

NOTE:

I have come to the end of this study on KNOWING THE TRUE GOD.

You can learn about the wisdom of God towards you from the book
of Proverbs. You need to remember as you study Proverbs that a
most important key to Bible understanding is that God uses
"general statement" all over the Bible. In other words there are
often "exceptions" to the rule as the saying goes. You need to
have this "a key to understanding the Bible" very much in your
mind. I have given a full in-depth study on this "Bible Key" on
this Website called "An Important Key."

The book of Ecclesiastes will give you the mind of God on other
important matters.

The "Song of Solomon" is fully expounded to you on this Website.
The mind of God on sexuality in marriage.

The "Prophets" (Isaiah to Malachi) for today are expounded for
you on this Website.

You can learn more about the true God from the life of Christ in
the Gospels. All expounded for you in "The New Testament Bible
Story."

And do not forget more about the true God is found in the
"general epistles" and "epistles of Paul" and "Revelation."

OUR HEAVENLY FATHER HAS REVEALED MUCH ABOUT HIMSELF IN
THE PAGES OF THE BIBLE. WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT
HIM IN THIS PHYSICAL LIFE OF OURS IS RECORDED AND
REVEALED TO US, AND TO OUR CHILDREN. THE SECRET THINGS
BELONG UNTO THE LORD (DEUT.29:29). WE LOOK THROUGH A GLASS
DARKLY ON SOME THINGS FOR NOW, BUT WE SHALL KNOW ONE
DAY, EVEN AS WE ARE KNOWN (1 COR.13:12).
