POET'S CORNER #8

 The Poet's Corner

For All Citizens of God's Land

LAND Of OUR BIRTH

by

Rudyard Kipling, (1906)

Land of our birth, we pledge to thee

Our love and toil in the years to be,

When we are grown and take our place

As men and women with our race.

Father in heaven, who lovest all

          O help thy children when they call;

That they may build from, age to age

          An undefiled heritage.

Teach us to rule ourselves alway,

          Controlled and cleanly night and day;

That we may bring, if need arise,

          No maimed or worthless sacrifice.

Teach us the strength that cannot seek

          By deed or thought to hurt the weak;

That, under Thee we may possess

Man's strength to comfort man's distress.

NT CHURCH GOVERNMENT #55---- ROLE OF WOMEN--- PASTOR? #1

Women's Role in the Church #10

The Role of Pastor #1

THE ROLE OF THE PASTOR

by the late Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi

CHAPTER VII

Are women any less capable than men of piety, zeal,
learning, leadership, counseling, preaching or whatever it takes
to serve as the pastor or elder of a congregation? If not, why
should women not be appointed to serve as pastors or elders?
These questions have elicited the deepest concerns of
evangelical feminists. Letha Scanzoni and Nancy Hardesty ask:

"Ordination is relevant to women who feel called to the
official ministry, and many women in all branches of the
church do feel this call of God upon their lives. Can the
church continue to deny them the opportunity to respond to
     this call?" 1

These are serious questions that demand our attention. The
answers are largely determined by one's understanding of the
nature of the church and of the role of the pastor. If the church
is viewed as being primarily a religious institution which
provides religious services to society, then its leaders will be
seen as administrators chosen on the basis of competence. This
understanding of the nature of the church would demand that women
be given equal access to the pastoral office in accordance with
the equal employment opportunitites that govern all service
institutions.
On the other hand, if the church is a spiritual family of
believers united to God and to one another by a common bond of
faith, then the pastor is a spiritual father of the "household of
God" (1 Tim 3:15: cf. 1 Cor 4:15) and the shepherd of the flock
(1 Pet 5:2). This understanding of the church, as an extended
family of believers, has important implications for the role of
women within the church.

Objectives

This chapter aims at defining the New Testament
understanding of the nature of the church and of the role of the
pastor within it, in order to determine if women can legitimately
fulfill such a role. For the sake of clarity this chapter is
divided in two parts: the first examines the role of the pastor
as representative of the congregation, the second considers his
role as a representative of Christ. Special attention will be
given in the second part of the chapter to the implications of
the male imagery of God for the appointment of women as
pastors/elders in the church.

PART I THE PASTOR AS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CONGREGATION

1. Models of Pastoral Roles

The understanding of the nature of the pastor's role within
the church determines to a large extent one's position on whether
or not a woman should serve as pastor/elder of the congregation.
Four major models of pastoral roles are generally held among
Christians and each of them has quite different implications.

Sacramental Role

A first pastoral model may be called the sacramental role.
According to this model, which is held by the Eastern Orthodox,
the Roman Catholic and to a lesser degree the Anglican church,
the pastor is seen primarily as a priest (sacerdos) whose central
function in the worship service is to preside at the eucharistic
(Lord's Supper) celebration. This view developed early in the
history of Christianity as the Lord's Supper came to be
understood as being essentially a sacramental reenactment of the
atoning death of Christ. This development led to the view that
the person presiding at the eucharistic sacrifice functioned as a
priest, acting not only on behalf of the congregation, but of the
very person of Christ.
This is the line of reasoning present in the Vatican 2
declaration, "Inter Insignores," which argues that at the
consecration of the eucharist the priest acts "in persona
Christi, taking the role of Christ to the point of being his very
image." 2 Since the priest becomes the very image of Jesus Christ
to the congregation, then it is only fitting that he should be a
man and not a woman, for Jesus was a man and not a woman.
According to these church traditions women cannot be
ordained as priests because by their very nature they are
incapable of receiving the "indelible character," that is, the
permanent divine grace conferred through the sacrament of
ordination.
This sacramental view of the priesthood founders on three
counts.
First, the New Testament makes it unequivocally clear that
there is no longer a special class of priests as the was in Old
Testament times. Christ has fulfilled and done away with the Old
Testament priesthood (Heb 5:4-6; 7:27; 9:24-28; 10:9-14). By His
sacrificial death Christ has opened to all direct access to God's
throne of grace (Rom 5:2; Eph 3:12; Heb 10:19-22). Baptized and
believing Christians need no human mediator because they are all
"a holy priesthood" capable of offering "spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pet 2:5).
Second, the Lord's Supper is never regarded in the New
Testament as a sacrifice in itself or as a reenactment of
Christ's atoning death. It is simply presented as a memorial of
Christ's sacrificial death (1 Cor 11:26). No special class of
priests is needed to preside over its celebration.
Lastly, if the priest represents the person of Christ and
not His masculinity, then the resemblance between Christ and the
priest need not be sexual but spiritual and consequently women
could represent equally well the person of Christ to the
congregation.

Functional Role

A second pastoral model may be called the functional role.
In this model the pastor is seen primarily as an administrator of
an institution known as the church. His appointment to the
pastoral office is determined by his functional effectiveness and
capacity for leadership. Churches that view themselves as
religious institutions that provide religious and social services
to the community are naturally apt to ordain women as pastors.
They see their pastor not as the "head" or "shepherd" of the
congregation, but as an effective and functional administrator.
Since women can manage businesses and institutions as effectively
as can men, their appointment to the pastoral office is seen as a
matter of necessity in order to bring the administration of the
church in line with the equal employment opportunitites of
secular institutions.
The problem with this functional model is that it reduces
the church from a community of believers to a service institution
and the pastor from a spiritual "head" and "shepherd" of the
flock to an administrator or policy setter. Administrative
competence can undoubtedly enhance the leadership role of a
pastor, but, as we shall see, it is not the fundamental Biblical
criterion for ordaining a person as pastor.
The church is meant to be not merely a functional
organization but a community of believers, the family of God. Its
pastors are not merely officials recruited without regard to
sexual distinctions as in secular institutions. Instead, they are
shepherds of the flock, appointed to represent Christ to the
people and the people to Christ. The pastor however, represents
Christ not sacramentally but functionally, that is not by
becoming the "very image" of Christ to the congregation, but by
representing the shepherding role of Christ, the chief Shepherd
(1 Pet 5:4). This double representative role requires, as we
shall see, that the person appointed to serve as pastor be a man
with specific spiritual and moral qualities.

Charismatic Role

A third pastoral model may be called the charismatic role.
In this model any person can be ordained as pastor if he or she
demonstrates having received from God some specific charisma,
that is, spiritual gift, such as prophecy, healing, faith,
wisdom, tongues, or preaching. In many ways the charismatic
pastoral role is a spiritual version of the functional pastoral
role described above. The main difference between the two is that
the competency required in the charismatic model is spiritual
rather than practical. Pentecostal and Holiness churches that
emphasize the charismatic role of the pastor have been ordaining
women as pastors since the 1890's, obviously because for them the
main prerequisite for ordination to the ministry is the
possession of some charisma.
There is no question that ordination to the office of
pastor/elder is not a right to be asked or fought for but a
matter of divine grace (1 Tim 4:14). One of God's gifts to the
church is the charisma of spiritual leadership: "And his gifts
were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some
evangelists, some pastors and teachers" (Eph 4:11; cf. 1 Cor
12:28-30). However, a person who has received a gift for
spiritual leadership is not automatically a candidate for
ordination to the ministry. Paul explains, for example, that a
man aspiring to serve as an overseer/elder in the church "must be
well thought of by outsiders" and by church members (1 Tim
3:6-7). This means that a man must prove himself before he can be
considered by the church to serve as pastor/elder.
Moreover, the stated requirements for such an office are the
evidence of moral integrity and exemplary leadership in the home
(1 Tim 3:2-5; Titus 1:6-9). No reference is made to the presence
of specific spiritual gifts. This does not mean that spiritual
gifts are irrelevant, but rather that they are secondary to those
qualities that would allow a man to exercise the same kind of
leadership in the church that he exercises in the home.
The Scriptures nowhere indicate that the gifts of the spirit
are "for men only." We have seen, for example, that both the Old
and the New Testaments speak of women ministering as prophets
(Judges 4:4; Acts 21:9; 1 Cor 11:5), a ministry which is
mentioned by Paul before that of evangelists, pastors and
teachers (Eph 4:11; 1 Cor 12:28-30). It is difficult, however, to
imagine that the Holy Spirit would normally call a woman to serve
as a pastor when, as we have seen in the previous chapter, the
same Spirit inspired Paul to instruct the church not to allow
women to serve as representative and authoritative leaders of the
church (1 Tim 2:12; 1 Cor 14:34).
If, as we have seen repeatedly in the course of this study,
God has established functional role differences for men and women
to fulfill in the home and in the church, then it is
inconceivable that the same God would normally call men or women
to serve in roles which are contrary to His creational order.
Paul devotes several chapters of his letter to the
Corinthian church - a church that resisted the idea of
hierarchy--to explain that the church, like the human body, needs
different functioning units, persons with different gifts, each
of which is essential to the proper functioning of the body. In
fact, Paul emphasizes that "the parts of the body which seem to
be weaker are indispensable ... God has so composed the body,
giving the greater honor to the inferior part, that there may be
no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same
care for one another" (1 Cor 12:22, 24-25).

Representative Role

A fourth pastoral model may be called the representative
role. This model differs significantly from those described
above. In this model the pastor fulfills a dual representative
function. On the one hand he functions as the representative head
of his members, and on the other hand, he serves as Christ's
representative to his members. This role of a pastor in the
"household of God" (1 Tim 3:15) is to a large extent similar to
the role of a father in the home. Like a father he cares for his
members personally, directing and correcting them as necessary.
The primary requirement for this kind of pastoral leadership are
those spiritual and natural qualities which lead the members to
respect the pastor as their personal spiritual leader. Leadership
skills and charisma are important but secondary requirements.
What is essential are the qualities of moral and spiritual
integrity which enable the pastor to serve as a worthy
representative of God and of the members.
The early Christians, as we shall see, adopted the
representative model of the pastor by appointing local elders to
serve as the heads of their congregations. Women were not
appointed as elders because this office involved oversight of the
congregation, "the household of God" (1 Tim 3:15): a role similar
to that a father is called to fulfill in the home. To explore
this reason more fully, consideration will now be given to the
role of the pastor in the New Testament.

2. The Origin of Elders/Pastors

Origin of Elders

During His ministry on earth Jesus did not establish a
structure of church organization. He called, trained, appointed
and commissioned twelve men to witness for Him to all nations
(Mark 3:14; 16:15-16; Acts 1:8). It was after the resurrection
and ascension that Christ's followers began to develop a form of
church organization. The book of Acts gives indications of an
emerging structure, built on the pattern of the synagogue.
Initially, the church of Jerusalem must have been seen as one of
the several hundred synagogues that existed in the city (see,
e.g. Acts 6:9).
The minimum requirement for the existence of a synagogue was
a group of ten men to constitute the board of elders. 3 In most
cases the elders of the synagogue were also the representative
heads of their households. The twelve apostles appointed by
Christ functioned as the original board of elders (Acts 1:20,
Greek "episkope--oversight" ). Peter and John designate
themselves as elders (presbyteros --1 Pet 5:1; 2 John 1; 3 John
1). The vacancy caused by the defection of Judas was filled by
the election of Matthias: "His office ("oversight"--episkope) let
another take" (Acts 1:20). The apostles, as the elders of the
first congregation, supervised the worship and instruction of the
members, exercised discipline and administered the distribution
of alms.
The dispersion of the Jerusalem church, caused by "a great
persecution" (Acts 8:1), resulted in the establishment of
daughter churches in Palestine/Syria. The eldership model of the
Jerusalem church was soon adopted by the new churches, as
indicated by the fact that Paul and Barnabas appointed "elders"
(presbyteroi) in every church they founded, committing them to
the Lord (Acts 14:23). The language of Acts suggests that the
elders (presbyteroi) could also be called overseers or bishops
(episkopoi--Acts 20:17,28). The same interchangeable use of the
two terms occurs in Titus 1:5-7.
It appears that initially the term "elder" designated the
status and the term "bishop/overseer" characterized the
responsibility of the elders, namely, to supervise and shepherd
the congregation (1 Pet 5:1-4). 4 By the beginning of the second
century, however, the term "bishop" came to be applied to the
sole leader of the congregation (monarchical bishop) who took
precedence over the presbyters and deacons. Initially, however,
the terms "elders" and "bishops" were modest words, used to
describe the representative and supervising function of what
today we call the pastor. Other terms were presumably also used
since other passages the in New Testament refer simply to "those
who are over you in the Lord" (1 Thess 5:12) or "your leaders"
(Heb 13:7).

The Use of the Term "Pastor"

The term "pastors" (pointer: which means "shepherds," is
used only once in the New Testament, namely, in the list of
offices given in Ephesians 4:11: "And his gift were that some
should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelist, some pastors
and teachers." The absence of the article in Greek before
"teachers," suggests that "pastor-teacher is a single office
embodying twofold function: that of shepherding or overseeing the
flock, and of teaching." 5
The limited use of the term "shepherd/pastor" indicates that
a: not a well-established title for the leaders of the
congregation who were better known as elders, overseers or simply
as leaders. Such leaders, however, were clearly seen as
"shepherds" as indicated by the metaphorical use of the verb
poimainein "shepherd the flock" to describe the work of the
elders (1 Pet 5:2; Acts 20:28: John 21:16). 6
What all of this means is that in the New Testament the
local elders/leaders functioned as the pastors of the
congregation. The term "pastor" may be seen as descriptive of the
shepherding function of the elders. Thus, the New Testament role
of the local "elder/overseer" corresponds essentially to the role
of today's pastor. In view of this fact the present policy of the
Seventh-day Adventist church to allow for the ordination of women
as local elders but not as pastors is based on an artificial
distinction between the two offices, a distinction which does not
exist in the New Testament.
The only legitimate distinction that can be made in the New
Testament is between the "local elders" and what could be called
the "elders at large" such as the apostles, Timothy, and Titus.
Both of them, however, then as now, functioned as "shepherds/
pastors" of the congregations. This means that the prerequisites
for the appointment of local elders and pastors are essentially
the same because both fulfill the same representative shepherding
function.

(Here in Dr.Sam's last paragraphs he disagrees with his SDA
church in ordaining women as "local elders."To which I add mu
support - Keith Hunt)

Plurality of Elders

Another important element, often ignored, is that in the New
Testament each church had several elders. This is indicated by
the fact that they are always referred to in the plural in
relation to any particular church. Paul and Bamabas "appointed
elders" in every church they founded in Asia (Acts 14:23). The
elders of the Jerusalem church are always referred to in the
plural (Acts 11:30; 15:2,4,5,22,23; 16:4; 21:18). Paul called the
"elders" of the church at Ephesus to come to him (Acts 20:17).
Titus is to "appoint elders in every town" (Titus 1:5). The sick
person is to "call for the elders of the church" (James 5:14). As
in the Jewish synagogue so in Christian churches one of the
elders was apparently appointed to serve as a presiding elder.
James served in such a role in the Jerusalem church (Acts
15:13-21), Timothy in the church of Ephesus (1 Tim 1:3) and Titus
in Crete (Titus 1:5).
The specific number of elders appointed in every church is
never mentioned. We can presume that the number was determined by
the size of the congregation and the number of men who were
suitably qualified (see 1 Tim 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9). The
qualifications suggest, as we shall see, that the elders were
mostly fathers who had proven their moral integrity and spiritual
leadership in their own household. This indicates that the church
was seen as an extended family where some of the qualified heads
of households were appointed to serve as heads of the larger
family of believers, "the household of God" (1 Tim 3:15).

Extended Family

A major factor which contributed to viewing the church as an
extended family is the fact that by accepting Jesus Christ as
their Savior, believers "receive adoption as sons" (Gal 4:5). As
adopted children they can call God "Abba! Father!" (Gal 4:6) and
relate to one another as "brother and sister" (James 2:14-15; 1
Cor 8:11; 1 Thess 4:6; Rom 12:1). Within this spiritual family
Christ Himself is called "the first-born among many brethren"
(Rom 8:29).
The pastor/elder functions as a spiritual father within the
church family because of his role in bringing new converts into
the church and nurturing them subsequently. For example, Paul
refers to the Corinthian believers as his children and to himself
as their father: "I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to
admonish you as my beloved children ... For I became your father
in Christ Jesus through the gospel" (1 Cor 4:14,16; cf. Eph 5:1;
Gal 3:26). Furthermore, church members are referred to as
"beloved children" (Eph 5:1), "sons and daughters" (2 Cor 6:18),
"brethren" (1 Cor 1:10,11,26; 2:1), "sisters" (Rom 16:1; 1 Cor
7:15), all terms indicative of a family relationship.
This understanding of the church as an extended family of
believers, led by elders who functioned as spiritual fathers and
shepherds explains why women were not appointed as elders/
pastors, namely because their role was seen as being that of
mothers and not fathers. This point will be further clarified
below.

3. Functions and Qualifications of Elders

Shepherding the Flock.

The main function of the elders was that of shepherding the
flock. The flock is to be directed and protected so that it may
be nourished and grow. Paul charged the elders of Ephesus to
remember their important shepherding calling: "Take heed to
yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has
made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he
obtained with the blood of his own Son" (Acts 20:28).
The task of shepherding the flock included guiding and
directing the congregation ordering its worship services,
correcting abuses, refuting errors, and regulating the
relationship of its members. Preaching and teaching were also
among the main functions of the elders (Titus 1:9; 1 Tim 3:2).
This is indicated by Paul's instruction: "Let the elders who
rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those
who labor in preaching and teaching" (1 Tim 5:17). The manner in
which this pastoral responsibility was to be exercised is
described in 1 Peter 5:1-4:

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a
witness of the sufferings of Christ as well as a partaker in
the glory that is to be revealed. Tend the flock of God that
is your charge, not by constraint but willingly, not for
shameful gain but eagerly, not as domineering over those in
your charge but being examples to the flock. And when the
chief Shepherd is manifested you will obtain the unfading
     crown of glory.

Respect for the Elders

In view of the important role the elders fulfilled as
representative fathers and shepherds of the flock, members are
admonished to respect and obey them. Peter, for example,
immediately after describing how elders should exercise their
leadership, goes on to indicate the respect elders should
receive: "Likewise you that are younger be subject to the elders"
(1 Pet 5:5). Similarly Paul urges the Thessalonians "to respect
those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and
admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of
their work" (1 Thess 5:12,13).
A similar admonition is given in the book of Hebrews: "Obey
your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over
your souls, as men who will have to give account" (Heb 13:17).
Here submission is enjoined to the leaders of the church
(elders/pastors) because of the solemn responsibility entrusted
to them to be accountable for the spiritual welfare of the
congregation.

Qualifications of Elders

The qualifications of elders/pastors are directly related to
the functions they are called to fulfill within the church. A
list of the main qualifications are given by Paul in 1 Timothy
3:1-7:

The saying is sure: If anyone aspires to the office of
bishop, he desires a noble task. Now a bishop must be above
reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible,
dignified, hospitable, an apt teacher, no drunkard, not
violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money.
He must manage his own household well, keeping his children
submissive and respectful in every way; for if a man does
not know how to manage his own household, how can he care
for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may
be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of
the devil; moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders,
or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

     This and similar descriptions (Titus 1:5-9; 1 Pet 5:1-3;
Acts 20:28-30) indicate that any potential elder/overseer/pastor
of the church must have moral integrity, ability in management,
knowledge of the Word of God, aptitude to teach and a genuine
pastoral concern. Particular emphasis is placed upon the
Christian character of the elder, exemplified by his temperate
life-style, loyalty to his wife, and leadership in the home.
Possession of these qualifications must be recognizable before a
man can be appointed as leader of the congregation.

4. The Appointment of Elders

Restricted to Men

Four major lines of evidence indicate that in the New
Testament the appointment of elders was restricted to men:

(1) Male Elders. The initial group of elders, as we have noted,
were the apostles themselves, who were all men. When the Gospel
proclamation reached beyond Jerusalem, the same pattern was
followed to appoint male elders in each congregation. The reason
is that Christian elders, as in the Jewish synagogue, were seen
as the spiritual fathers of an extended family. Jerome D. Quinn
observes:

The extended family of the ancient world is presumed and
proposed as the model and parable of a church that is bound
in faith and loyalty to the living Father who has bestowed
life on those who are now his sons and daughters. In that
family some of the sons are presbyter-bishops and so
"householders" (oikonomi, cf. Titus 1:7), men who visibly
represent and answer to the Father. The tried virtues of
Christian family life are the criteria proposed for choosing
these men to share in Pauline ministry (Titus 1:6). A father
who has not presided well over his own household ought not
     to preside over a church (1 Tim 3:4-5). 7

(2) Specification of "Man"

In the descriptions of qualifications of an elder in 1
Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-7, specific reference is made to
"man--aner" as distinct from "woman." The importance of this fact
is brought out by B. W. Powers:

An elder is to be a 'one-woman man,' that is, a person who
is loyal to a wife and does not become involved with other
women; but the point is also made that he is to be a man.
This is further reinforced by the fact that an elder
is required to be able to manage his own household as well
as a qualification for the role of ruling as an elder. This
could never be said of a woman. 8

(3) Structure of Passage

This conclusion is further supported by the structure of the
passage in 1 Timothy where the qualifications for the office of
elder (3:1-7) are given immediately after the prohibition
of women teaching as leaders in the church (2:11-15). The
collocation of this prohibition immediately before the
qualifications for eldership, suggests that the two are closely
related. Having explained why women should not serve as
teaching-leaders of the congregation, Paul then proceeds
immediately to spell out what kind of men are suitable for such
an office. The connection between the two has been recognized by
some scholars. 9

(4) Authority Role

The discussion of the role of women in the New Testament
indicates that they could not have exercised the role of
elders/pastors, because the two roles were viewed as mutually
exclusive. A woman, as we have seen in chapter 6, was not to
teach as the leader in the church or to exercise authority over
men (1 Tim 2:12: 1 Cor 14:34), whereas the function of the elder
was to exercise fatherly authority within the congregation (1 Tim
5:17; 3:4-5) over both men and women.

Appointment of Elders

The process followed by the apostolic church to elect and
ordain their church leaders is not clearly explained in the New
Testament. Three major factors seem to have contributed to their
election: qualifications, calling, and recognition by the church
and/or church leaders. In addition to the qualifications for the
office of elder discussed above, there was required a recognition
on the part of the church that the person aspiring to serve as
elder had been called by God. The church recognized that the Holy
Spirit had called Bamabas and Saul for their particular work
(Acts 13:2). Paul seems to refer to the recognition by the church
of Timothy's calling when he speaks of "the prophetic utterances
which pointed to you" 1 Tim 1:18). It is also reasonable to
assume that the person aspiring to the office of overseer (1 Tim
3:1) could testify that he believed himself to be called of God
to serve in such a role.
The qualifications and the calling were to be recognized
presumably both by the congregation (Acts 13:3; 1 Tim 3:7; 5:22)
and by church leaders (Acts 14:23; 1 Tim 5:22; Titus 1:5). This
recognition resulted in a special appointment to the office of
elder through the rite of laying on of hands. The performance of
this rite is suggested by Paul's admonition to Timothy not to
neglect the gift which he had received "when the council of
elders laid their hands upon [him]" (1 Tim 4:14; cf. 2 Tim 1:6).
An additional indication is provided by Paul's advice to Timothy:
"Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands" (1 Tim 5:22). Since
his advice is given in the context of the treatment of elders
(vv.17-19), it undoubtedly refers to their official appointment
to the office of elder.

In the light of the foregoing considerations we may say that
in the New Testament, the act of laying on of hands, which became
known as the rite of ordination, represents the church's
recognition of qualifications and divine calling of the man being
officially appointed to serve as shepherd and father of the
spiritual family of believers (1 Pet 5:2-4; Acts 20:28). The
notion of ordination as a sacramental act which conveys the
"indelible character" of the priesthood is foreign to the New
Testament. Instead, the essential function of the ceremony is to
invest a person, who had proven his moral and spiritual
worthiness, with the right to serve officially as a
representative spiritual father and shepherd of the congregation,
"the household of God" (1 Tim 3:15).

5. The Appointment of Women as Elders/Pastors?

Women as Spiritual Fathers? Can a woman be officially
appointed by the church through the laying on of hands to serve
as a representative spiritual father and shepherd of the
congregation? The answer of the New Testament is NO. The reason
is not because women are any less capable than men of piety,
zeal, learning, leadership, preaching or whatever it takes to
serve as pastor, but simply because such role is perceived in the
New Testament as being that of a spiritual father and not of a
spiritual mother. In chapters 5 and 6 we have shown that the New
Testament emphasizes the importance of respecting the functional
role distinctions of men and women established by God at
creation. These role distinctions, we have noted, do not imply
superiority or inferiority, but rather reflect a divine design
and concern for well-ordered and harmonious relations within the
home and the church.
Men and women were created not superior and inferior, but
rather different from and complementary to one another. What God
made woman to be and what He intends her to do, makes her
different from but not inferior to man. This difference is
reflected in the different roles men and women are called to
fulfill in life. The woman is to be wife and mother while the man
is to be husband and father. As father, man is called to be a
caring head and guardian of the home, a divinely established role
in the natural family which must be reflected in the church,
because the church is, as we have shown, the extended family of
God. This means that to appoint a woman to serve as elder/pastor
would be analogous to assigning her the role of fatherhood in the
family.

The Larger Question

The question of women's ordination must be seen as part of
the larger question of the distinctive and different roles men
and women are called to fulfill in the home and in the church.
David Scaer emphasizes the need to consider the wider scope of
the problem:

The problem of women pastors cannot be handled in isolation,
but must be viewed in conjunction with the other sexual
misunderstandings of which it is both a part and a result.
Only citing the simple prohibition against the women
pastors, without viewing the wider horizon of which the
prohibition is a part, leaves unsolved the real and basic
problem of understanding the divine established relationship
     of male and female. 10

The elder/pastor serves as the shepherd of the flock, the
father of the extended family of believers, which is the church.
Such representative role implies a spiritual authority which by
divine appointment belongs to man and not to woman. Essentially
this is the theological reason given by Paul in those crucial
passages (1 Tim 2:1115; 1 Cor 11:3-15; 14:33-36) where he
explains why women are not to serve as representative leaders of
the church, namely, because they "should be subordinate" (1 Cor
14:34).
We have shown in chapter 5 that the Pauline (Biblical)
understanding of subordination is not demeaning but elevating. It
signifies not servile dependence, but willing and loving response
to the caring leadership of a husband (Eph 5:26-29). It is
patterned after the subordination of the church to Christ. Some
reject the analogy between the Christ-church model and the
husband-wife model because, to quote Rosemary Reuther, it is a
"hierarchical, dominance-submission model of marriage." 11 What
she fails to realize is that in the Christ-church model, the
husband too is called to be subordinate, first to Christ and then
to his wife by loving and caring for her sacrificially. The
Biblical (Christological) model calls for a male-female
partnership under the Lordship of Christ and the loving,
sacrificial leadership of man.

The Danger of the Partnership Paradigm

The Biblical model of different and yet complementary roles
of men and women in the home and in the church may well be a
scandal to liberal and evangelical feminists bent on promoting
the egalitarian, partnership paradigm. Nonetheless, Christians
committed to the authority and wisdom of the Scriptures, cannot
ignore or reject a most fundamental Biblical principle. To
encourage the blurring or elimination of role distinctions God
assigned to men and women in the home and in the church means not
only to act contrary to His creational design, but also to
accelerate the breakdown of the family and church structure.
     Donald G. Bloesch, a well-known evangelical theologian
inclined toward the ordination of women, acknowledges: "It cannot
be denied that the women's liberation movement, for all its solid
gains, has done much to blur the distinctions between the sexes
and that many women who have entered the ministry appear
committed to the eradication of these distinctions." 12 This
trend, as Bloesch observes, "is in no small way responsible for
accelerating divorce and the breakdown of the family." 13
Feminist ideologies are generally opposed to the sanctity of
the family and to the worthiness of the call to motherhood. The
reason is because such ideologies, as Michael Novak keenly
observes, "thrive best where individuals stand innocent of the
concrete demands of loyalty, responsibility, and common sense
into which family life densely thrusts them." 14
To realize freedom from the constraints of motherhood, many
evangelical feminists, like their liberal counterparts, denigrate
the role of women as homemaker and advocate abortion on demand.
Donald Bloesch warns that "The fact that some clergywomen today
in the mainline Protestant denominations are championing the
cause of lesbianism (and a few are even practicing a lesbian
life-style) should give the church pause in its rush to promote
women's liberation [and ordination]." 15

An indication of the promotion of lesbianism as a legitimate
"Christian life-style" is provided by the consultation on lesbian
theology at the 1986 joint annual meeting of the prestigious
American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature,
held in Atlanta, November 22-25. Several papers were presented
designed to articulate a theological rationale for the legitimacy
of a lesbian life-style. In view of this alarming trend, today
more than ever before, Christians are called to uphold the sexual
role distinctions divinely ordained for men and women to fulfill
in the home and in the church. The preservation of such
distinctions provides a most needed bastion of common sense and
an inoculation against all sort of nonsense ideologies which are
intent on perverting and destroying God's design for the
harmonious relations of men and women in the home and in the
church.

6. Practical Considerations

The first and fundamental reason for restricting the role of
elder/pastor to men is theological and not biological or
cultural. Our preceding discussion has shown that from a Biblical
perspective a woman cannot assume the representative role of
spiritual father/shepherd of a congregation because that is a
male and not a female role. The Scriptures give no right to blur
or eliminate male and female role distinctions in the home and in
the church. In addition, we believe that practical considerations
support the Biblical instructions. These we shall now consider,
though briefly, because they constitute secondary reasons. For a
fuller treatment of these the reader is referred to Rosalie
Haffner Lee's essay "Is Ordination Necessary to Women's
Ministry?", published in this book as chapter 9.

Marriage and Pastoral Vows

Many of the women who seek ordination are married or
planning to marry a man in another profession. This situation may
invite tension in the church and discord in the home. In the home
a woman pastor may find it difficult, if not impossible, to honor
her marriage vows to serve her husband as wife and mother while
the church demands so much of her time and attention. In the
church, members may question the quality of pastoral care they
receive from a female pastor who first must honor her commitment
to nurture her own family.

In her book "Women and Church Leadership," Margaret Howe, a
supporter of women's ordination, shares some of the responses she
received from a questionnaire she sent out to a number of woman
pastors. One of the respondents who was contemplating marriage,
wrote: "I wonder how I can marry and maintain my current
60-64hour week at my career." 16 Another wrote: "We are ready to
start our family, and I have had some anxieties about the
congregation's reactions. It's really none of their business, but
that's easier to say than feel." 17 Still another, "There seem to
be more crucifixion than resurrection experiences. I don't know
if I can sustain this." 18
Being a wife, mother and pastor at the same time raises many
questions. How can she handle pregnancy and subsequent child care
over an extended period of time? Should the church look for a
substitute pastor while its female pastor is homebound? What
model of parenthood does a woman project when she leaves her
children in a daycare center in order to minister to her members?
Should not her first obligation be to minister to her immediate
family members? What if her husband is transferred to work in
another part of the country? Should she let her husband go on his
own? Would not this be a violation of her marriage vows to remain
with him as long as both shall live?

Role Reversals

Another important consideration is the negative impact of
the headship role of a female pastor both in her own family and
on the families of the congregations. As Bishop Kirk points out,
if the headship of the man in the congregation is rejected, his
headship in the family will be gravely imperilled. 19 The
headship of a husband in his own family can hardly remain
unaffected if his own wife serves as the head of the congregation
to which he belongs. What impact will this role reversal have
also on the families of the congregations? Will not this tempt at
least some of the congregation to arrogate to themselves a
position of headship in the family similar to the headship over
her husband exercised in the church by their female pastor?
Even more crucial is the impact of the role modeling of a
female pastor especially upon the children of divided families
who have either no father or a non-Christian father. To these
children the pastor becomes a father figure and sometimes the
only positive male role model in their lives. A female pastor
would deprive these children of an appropriate father role model.

Single Woman Pastor

The problem of role modeling for a woman pastor becomes even
more critical when she is young and single. Male elders who are
her seniors will have great difficulty to accept a single young
lady in her twenties as their spiritual father and shepherd of
the congregation. A male elder of a small Seventh-day Adventist
church of about ninety members, where a young lady just out of
seminary had been ordained as local elder, told me: "Our church
has become a women's club. The few male members of our church now
seldom attend because with a female elder preaching most of the
time, they feel out of place in church."
Women also may have difficulty accepting a young female
pastor as their spiritual shepherd. Two of the respondents to the
questionnaire Margaret Howe sent out to female pastors offer an
example: "One respondent reported that a woman in her
congregation 'said that it made her physically ill to see and
hear a woman in the pulpit'! Another commented, 'I also work with
youth, and I find that many of the mothers wanted a 'good-looking
male' minister for their kids." 20 Howe continues citing examples
of members who could not bring themselves to give to their female
pastor her correct title.
It must be most painful for a young female pastor to feel
unaccepted as pastor by some of the members of the congregation
she is endeavoring to minister to. If she lacks the support of a
family, she may find it hard, if not impossible, to bear such a
heavy burden in addition to her loneliness and vulnerability as a
young female. This explains the reason for the Biblical
instruction that an elder must be a mature man who manages well
his own household (1 Tim 3:4).

Ministry of Women Today

The intent of the foregoing considerations is not to
restrict or deny women opportunities to minister within the
church, but rather to encourage respect for the different but
complementary roles God has called men and women to fulfill in
the home and in the church. God has given to women unique and
invaluable gifts and ministries which are essential to the
healthy growth of both the private family and the church family.
The church that restricts the role of women to cleaning and
cooking greatly impoverishes its own spiritual life by depriving
herself of the warmth and love that only women can give.
The question ought not to be: Is it legitimate to ordain
women to the ministry?, but rather: To which ministry is it
legitimate to appoint women? In the concluding chapter I shall
point out that there is an urgent need to open up new forms of
ministries to professionally trained women who are willing to
serve not only in the traditional roles of Bible Instructors,
choir directors, children's Sabbath School teachers, and
deaconesses, but also in new roles such as health educators,
pastoral counselors, instructors of new converts, and directors
of family services. Such ministries are urgently needed in view
of the growing number of broken homes, single parents, alienated
and abused children, elderly members and drug-addicted young
people.
The recognition of the Biblical validity and necessity of
the ministry of women must not obscure the equally important
Biblical truth of the role distinctions of men and women in the
home and in the church. Such distinctions calls for men serve as
heads of the family and for some of them as representive heads of
the extended family, the church.
The church must be structured in a way that supports the
structure of the family and the family must be structured in a
way that supports the pattern of church order. To appoint a woman
to serve as the representative spiritual father and shepherd of a
congregation would be analogous to assigning her the role of
fatherhood in a family. Both instances represent a violation of
God's design for the well-functioning of our homes and churches.

PART 2

THE PASTOR AS REPRESENTATIVE OF CHRIST

1. The Symbolic Role of the Pastor

Christ's Representative

The pastor serves not only as representative of the
congregation, but also as Christ's representative to the
congregation. In the Old Testament the priests functioned as the
typological representatives of the redemptive ministry of Christ.
The book of Hebrews explains at great length the typological
correspondence between the ministry of the priests in the earthly
sanctuary and that of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary (Heb 8,9,
10). By offering His own blood once, for ever and for all, Christ
fulfilled and terminated the typological sacrificial ministry of
Old Testament priests which pointed to His redemptive ministry
(Heb 9:11-14; 10:1-14). Yet there is still a ministry of
intercession and reconciliation which Christ, the heavenly High
Priest, continues to perform on behalf of believers (Heb 7:25).
The pastor, in a similar and yet different way from the Old
Testament priests, serves as Christ's representative to the
church.

Note:

Dr.Sam here has given some very sound Biblical and logical points
on why it is men and not women who are to be ordained as
Pastor/Elders of the local churches of God.

As I have in detail proved in my studies on "church government"
women have all the freedom to teach the Gospel of Christ outside
of say a 2 hour church service once a week. And with the
instruction for them to teach younger women, teach and train
children, there is no need whatsoever to feel a woman cannot
serve the Gospel of God in a mighty big way. And I will state
again that Paul was NOT against women, as some believe and teach;
on the contrary, Paul acknowledged the work of women in the
Gospel ministry, even saying that some were his co-workers. All
of that and more is covered under my studies on church government.

KNOWING GOD #32--- THE PSALMS TELL US #8

KNOWING the True God #32

His might and power!

PSALM 121

I will quote this Psalm in its entirety. It has somewhat of
a sentimental value to me; as a child growing up in a Church of
England school, I had to memorize this Psalm:

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: from whence cometh my
help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee
will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither
slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade
upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the
moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: He
shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out
and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore."

What a great Psalm of hope, peace, and blessing. All the
children of God need to know this Psalm, not necessarily by
memory as I had to learn it when a young boy, but every child of
the Lord needs to know the promise of the Lord in this Psalm.
Yes, you must not take it out of context of the whole Bible, for
the whole Bible tells you that you must know that this Psalm is
true of the true God, even when you may be facing death for His
safe. Remember the three friends of Daniel and the fiery furnace.
This Psalm was true for them, even if, as they said, God chose
not to rescue them from physical death. They would serve the true
God and know they were in His arms, for you will be preserved;
you will be His, and you will be given life forever more in a
resurrection to glory.
So we go through life remembering the teaching of this
wonderful Psalm. We may slumber and sleep in death for a moment,
but the God of Israel does not slumber or sleep. And He has the
power to preserve your spirit (Ecc.12:7) until the day of the
resurrection of the saints.

PSALM 122 to 124

Jerusalem will yet be the house of the Lord. The throne of
David (Jesus sitting on it) shall be there once more as in days
of old. Yes, even other thrones of the 12 apostles ruling each
over a tribe of Israel as Jesus promised them (Matthew 19:28).
This is all foretold in the prophets of old.
God will be the deliverer and our helper.

PSALM 125 and 126

The saints of God will be as mount Zion - which cannot be
moved, for the Lord has decreed it to be so. As the mountains are
around Jerusalem, so is the Lord around His people. What people
sow they shall reap; the righteous shall find goodness, the
wicked shall go forth and be no more, just as Romans 6:23
teaches.

PSALM 127

The Lord should be our foundation for all things. Building
on anything but the ways of the Lord is vain and useless in the
long run of things that really matter.
It is God that created man and woman, and it is a blessing
to have children, providing of course you teach them the ways of
the righteousness of the Creator.

PSALM 128

An overall general statement is here given. It is a blessing
to respectfully fear the Lord, and for most of God's children
life will be good, maybe some hills and valleys along the way,
but the majority are not chosen to be a Paul, single, enduring
many severe trials in life, rejection by some, beatings by
others, and all the rest that the apostle Paul would have to face
in serving and teaching the truth of the Lord.

PSALM 129

Sometimes it is okay to cry out that the wicked, be cut
loose, to face the reward of the wicked.

PSALM 130

Ah, once more we are reminded that God is merciful, with Him
their is redemption, with Him there is forgiveness. It is good to
wait for the Lord, to know His word is true.

PSALM 131

It is good to be HUMBLE, to know your place, and not try to
exercise yourself in matters that you are not skilled in, and are
beyond your abilities. As Paul put it, do not think more of
yourself than you should.

PSALM 132

The promise that the Lord made with David and his throne
will come to pass. From the very lineage of David, Jesus came,
and He will sit upon David's throne in Zion. The saints will
shout aloud for joy. The anointed One - Jesus the Christ - will
bud forth on that throne in Zion, and His enemies will be clothed
with shame, as His crown flourishes.

PSALM 133

It is indeed good and pleasant for God's people to dwell in
unity. The unity is not a man made organization, but a unity of
spiritual truth, the unity of the Spirit leading into all truth,
as Jesus promised it would after it came on that day of Pentecost
in 30 A.D. The Spirit has never stopped leading into all truth,
for those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for those
who will prove all things and hold fast to that which is good.

PSALM 134

We should bless the Lord and He will bless us.

PSALM 135

The Lord is good. He is great. The Lord is above all gods.
Whatsoever He was pleased to do in the heaven, the earth, the
seas, He did it. He makes the lightnings, the rain, the wind. He
it is who can smite nations and kings, all things are in His
hands. The idols of the heathen may have been built to look like
mighty humans, but their mouth cannot talk, their eyes cannot
see, their ears cannot hear. They that make such gods are like
them - dumb as dumb can be!
And those that make evolution as their god are as dumb as
what they believe we came from, some tiny dumb cells in the sea.

PSALM 136

A Psalm that looks back at some of the mighty acts the Lord
did from the creation to the blessings bestowed on the people of
Israel.

PSALM 137

Thinking of being captive in Babylon, but knowing God has a
plan, and that plan will mean the destruction of Babylon.
All this will happen again, history will repeat itself; this
time at the end of the age, when Jesus will come to deliver
Israel and Judah out of captivity in modern Babylon, and will
also once more destroy the Babylon of the book of Revelation.

PSALM 138

In a figure of speech God will magnify His word above His
name. One day all the kings of the earth will praise the Lord,
when they hear the words from His mouth. The glory of the Lord
will be so great they will sing in the ways of the Lord.
Indeed the day comes that the knowledge of the Lord shall
cover the earth as the waters cover the seas.
Though God be high in the heavens, He will come close to the
lowly and humble; but the proud He knows only from a far
distance.
God is our victor against the enemy. The Lord will perfect
in mercy, those that are His. He knows them and He keeps them
safe unto the day of the resurrection when He will call and we
shall answer; when He will have a desire to the work of His hands
(Job 14:14-15).

The final understandings

FROM THE BOOK "WESTERN CIVILIZATION"

QUOTE:

THE RULE OF CHARLEMAGNE

.....As a matter of fact, it was Charlemagne's constant
intervention in religious affairs which led to the climax of his
whole career - his coronation as Roman Emperor by Pope Leo 3. Leo
had been in trouble for some time. Accused of being a tyrant and
a rake, he so aroused the indignation of the people of Rome that
in 799 they gave him a severe beating and forced him to flee from
the city, Struggling over the mountains to Germany, he implored
the aid of Charlemagne. The great king sent him back to Italy and
was instrumental in restoring him to the papal throne. On
Christmas day, 800, as Charles knelt in prayer in St.Peter's
church the grateful Pope placed a crown on his head while the
assembled multitude hailed him as, "Augustus, crowned of God,
Great and pacific Emperor of the Romans"....The Carolingian
empire thus established was not conceived as the beginning of a
new state, but as a REVIVAL of the empire of the Caesars. the
grandeur of Rome was now held to be REBORN.....

THE EMPIRE OF OTTO THE GREAT

.....When the eastern branch of the Carolingian dynasty died out
in 911, the Germans returned to their ancient practice of
electing a king. Their first choice was Conrad of Franconia. He,
in turn, was succeeded by Henry 1, the founder of the Saxon
dynasty. The more famous member of this dynasty was henry's son,
Otto the Great who became king in 936. From the beginning of his
reign Otto apparently entertained ambitions of becoming something
more than a mere king in Germany. He had himself crowned at
Aachen, probably to convey the idea that he was rightful
successor of Charlemagne. Soon afterwards he intervened in
Italian affairs and assumed the title of King of the Lombards.
From this it was only a step to becoming involved with the
Papacy. In 961 Otto responded to an appeal from Pope John 7 for
protection against his enemies, and in January of the following
year he was rewarded by being crowned Roman Emperor. Although the
empire of Otto the Great was confined to Germany and Italy, there
was doubtless the belief in the mind of its founder that it would
eventually be enlarged, perhaps to embrace all of Latin
Christendom....

THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE OF
FREDERICK BARBAROSSA AND
FREDERICK 2

IN the twelfth century the crown of Otto the Great came into
possession of the Hohenstaufen family, whose most distinguished
representatives were Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick 2. Both
of these rulers were outspoken in asserting their claims to
imperial dignity. Frederick Barbarossa called the empire of
Germany and Italy the Holy Roman Empire on the theory that it was
a universal empire established directly by God and co-ordinate in
rank with the church.Frederick 2, who was king of Sicily and
southern Italy as well as Holy Roman Empire, was much more
interested in his southern kingdom than he was in Germany.
Nevertheless, he believed just as firmly as did his grandfather
Barbarossa in a universal empire as the highest secular power in
western Europe.....

THE CROWN OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE
PASSES TO THE HAPSBURGS

Frederick 2 was no more successful than any of his predecessors
in increasing the power of the Holy Roman Empire. His great
mistake was his failure to enlist the support of the middle class
in the cities as the Capetian monarchs in France had done.
Without this it was impossible to break through the wall of papal
opposition. After Frederick died in 1250 the Popes proceeded to
annihilate the remaining members of the Hohenstaufen line. In
1273 Rudolf of Hapsburg was elected to the imperial throne, but
the Holy Roman Empire over which he and his descendants ruled was
seldom very powerful. When finally abolished in 1806 by Napoleon,
it was little more than a political fiction.....

NAPOLEON CROWNED. THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF THE EMPIRE

Though Napoleon was now an absolute monarch in nearly everything
but name, he still was not satisfied. In 1802 he obtained the
consent of the people to extend his term of office as First
Consul from ten years to life. All that then remained was to make
his position hereditary. In 1804 by another plebiscite he won
permission to convert the Consulate into an empire. Soon
afterwards in the midst of impressive ceremonies in the cathedral
of Notre Dame, he placed a crown upon his own head and assumed
the title of Napoleon 1.....He brought Pope Pius & all the way
from Rome to officiate at his coronation, though he was careful
to produce the impression that His Holiness was acting as the
mere agent of God and not as an international sovereign who could
create and depose the emperor.....Napoleon's work as a statesman
included many other changes in the political system of France.
For one thing, he restored the union between the Catholic church
and the state. In 1801 he signed a Concordat with the Pope, which
provided that bishops should be nominated by the First Consul and
that the salaries of the clergy should be paid by the government.
Even if the Catholic church did not regain the legal monopoly it
had enjoyed under the Old Regime, since other religions were also
to be tolerated, it was nevertheless placed in a position of
decided advantage and was thereby able to increase its power in
succeeding years. Not until 1905, when the Concordat of 1801 was
finally broken, was Catholicism again reduced to equality with
other faiths....

THE FASCIST REVOLUTION IN ITALY
MUSSOLINI'S CONTRADICTORY
IDEAS

Probably it is safe to say that Mussolini was never a radical by
sincere and reasoned conviction but was simply following the
inclinations of a rebellious nature. No man with a define
philosophy could have reversed himself so often.....

(1) TOTALITARIANISM.
The state incorporates every interest and every loyalty
of its members. There must be "nothing above the state, nothing
outside the state, nothing against the sate."....

(2) NATIONALISM
The nation is the highest form of society ever evolved
by the human race....Internationalism is therefore a gross
perversion of human progress. The nation must be made strong and
great, through self-sufficiency, a powerful army, and a rapidly
increasing birth rate.

(3) IDEALISM
The philosophy of Fascism was an idealist philosophy in
the sense that it renounced the materialistic interpretation of
history. The nation, according to Mussolini could become anything
it willed to become.....

(4) ROMANISM
Reason can never be an adequate instrument for the
solution of great national problems. Intellect needs to be
supplemented by mystic faith, by self-sacrifice, and by worship
of heroism and strength....

(5) AUTHORITARIANISM
The sovereignty of the state is absolute. The citizen
has no rights but simply duties. What the nation needs, is not
liberty, but work, order, prosperity.....

(6) MILITARISM
Strife is the origin of all things. Nations which do
not expand eventually wither and die. War exalts and ennobles man
and regenerates sluggish and decadent peoples.

No unprejudiced person would deny that the Fascist regime in
Italy had a few achievements to its credit, 1940, when Italy
entered World War 2, the government had reduced illiteracy,
effected what appeared to be a satisfactory settlement of the old
quarrel with the papacy, obliterated the Mafia, or Black Hand
organizations, in Sicily.....

THE NAZI TRIUMPH IN GERMANY

Germany succumbed to fascism much later than Italy, mainly for
the reason that forces of nationalism and militarism were
temporarily discredited as a result of defeat in World War 1....

By a treaty with Pius 11 in 1929 the Fascist government abrogated
the 1871 Law of Papal Guaranties and recognized the complete
independence of the Vatican City. The agreement also provided
that Roman Catholicism should be the official religion of the
state, that religious instruction should be given in the schools,
and that the laws of the church should be ENFORCED by the
government.....

1935. In the fall of that year Benito Mussolini sent an army to
invade ETHIOPIA. The Ethiopian king appealed to the Council of
the League of Nations, which was fortunately in session. With
promptness unusual under the circumstances, the Council branded
Italy as an aggressor and decided to apply economic sanctions
against her....further efforts to curb Italy were quietly
abandoned. In May, 1936, Mussolini completed his conquest of the
Lion of Judah and proclaimed the establishment of the Italian
Empire. With Mussolini so successful in flouting the regime of
international law and order, it could be expected that Hitler
would take a turn at winning victories by bold defiance. He began
by tearing up the disarmament provisions of the Treaty of
Versailles. In 1935 he publicly announced the revival of
conscription and the return to universal military training. By
threatening the creation of a huge air force he hoodwinked the
British into signing a naval agreement permitting Germany to
build was vessels up to 35 per cent of the strength of Britain's
navy. by the end of 1936 he had a conscript army of over 800,000
men and 108 naval vessels already built or under construction....

END QUOTES

You will have noticed that in May, 1936, Mussolini completed his
conquest of the Lion Of Judah and proclaimed the establishment of
the ITALIAN EMPIRE. You will have noticed part of his beliefs
were that he had ROMANTICISM as a must for his empire, Intellect
needs to be supplemented by "mystic faith< by self-sacrifice, and
by worship of heroism." IN patching things up with the Papacy
there was a treaty signed with Pope Pius 11, recognizing the
complete independence of the Vatican city, and provided that
Roman Catholicism should be the OFFICIAL RELIGION OF THE STATE,
that religious instruction should be given in the schools, and
the LAWS OF THE CHURCH should be ENFORCED by the GOVERNMENT!

MUSSOLINI had resurrected the 6TH HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE.

FIVE THAT WERE

1. Charlemagne 814 A.D.
2. Otto the Great 962 A.D.
3. Frederick 1180 A.D.
4. Rudolf of Hapsburg 1273 A.D.
5. Napoleon 1804 A.D.

The ONE that is - Mussolini 1929 (John sees this AS IF he was
living at the time of this sixth kingdom).

The ONE that is yet to be.

This is interpreted FOR US in v.12-14. The ten horns are the
seventh mountain. Ten kingdoms will arise in the SAME
geographical area of Europe as the other resurrected Holy
(Church) Roman Empires were.

They will UNITE as one nation giving their power into the hands
of ONE specific great civil military leader - called the beast
(see chap.19:20; 16:13-14; Dan.7:11).
This beast leader will have the help of a great false prophet
(chap.19:20; 16:13-14). THEY and the armies of these ten united
nations will fight Christ at His return.

This SEVENTH HOLY Roman Empire is NOW being formed in Europe. It
is now known as the "EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET". It was only
economical - it is NOW political, the FIRST EVER European
government was elected in June 1979. It has many MORE than ten
nations within it at present and more wanting to join. But by the
time Jesus is to return, it will be ONLY 10 NATIONS that will
unite under the beast man and false prophet to fight Christ as He
comes to earth. It will become also a religious empire - ruled by
the Catholic Church and its Pope - the antiChrist, man of sin,
the false prophet. It will be the most powerful military
"religious" empire of all time. The RC church has at present (in
2003, as I put this up on my Website) over 1 BILLION MEMBER
worldwide and ever increasing, that is ONE in every SIX person on
earth are Roman Catholic by religious faith!
This last revived, resurrected HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE will cause the
LAST martyrdom of saints, that we read about in Revelation
chapter 12.

Rev.18 - BABYLON

There was a LITERAL empire called BABYLON. There was a LITERAL
city called BABYLON. Shall we understand the Babylon of Rev.18 to
refer to a LITERAL city and a LITERAL empire? Let's compare
scripture with scripture.

v. 2
BABYLON IS FALLEN IS FALLEN - is fallen ONCE (the original city)
is fallen (again to fall) TWICE. The fall of Babylon for the
second time CANNOT be the ORIGINAL city because it was never to
be inhabited or built again (Isa.13:20), as it once was.

HABITATION OF DEVILS ... FOUL SPIRIT... CAGE OF ... UNCLEAN ...
BIRD.
Compare this with Isa.13:21. The language is similar for that of
original Babylon. But here is added "habitation of demons and
foul spirits." Now notice Rev.20:1-3. Satan is bound at some
location for a 1,000 years. Yes, he and his foul spirits will be
bound at this second modern Babylon which is yet to be destroyed
and become as the first Babylon.

v. 3
Compare with Rev.17:2. The language is unmistakably similar - we
have seen that the woman in Rev.17 is the great false Church, the
Catholic Church. Notice Rev.14:8 Babylon is called a great city -
all nations have been made drunk (spiritually) by her. The same
type of description. Rev.17:5 calls this Church mystery Babylon -
its practices must have a mysterious connection with the original
Babylon.

v. 5,6
Compare with Rev.16:18,19. A literal earthquake, thunder and
lightnings, literal cities of nations fall - the GREAT city -
great Babylon - must also be literal.

v. 16
We go over to this verse for a moment - compare it with Rev.
17:4. This great city and the woman of Rev.17 are the same.

v. 8-19
The kings - the merchants - the shipmasters, sailors that trade
by sea - shall stand AFAR OFF and shall see the SMOKE of her
BURNING. Now, if this Babylon is the "whole earth" how are many
kings, and merchants going to STAND AFAR OFF and bewail her
destruction - for everyone on the earth would be IN the down
fall, in the destruction?
If this Babylon is a "spiritual sin" how are some going to stand
afar off and SEE the SMOKE of her BURNING?

v. 23
This Babylon is responsible for DECEIVING the whole earth. Here
then is a power that is number one in God's eyes as a deceiver of
nations.
If something is responsible for deceiving something else, then
the deceiver is a TANGIBLE as the one BEING DECEIVED.

v. 49.
Notice! This Babylon is responsible for the death of saints - now
compare this with Rev.13:15 - the second beast of John causes
death on people who would not worship its way. The "little horn"
of Daniel 7:21,25 and 8:9-12 also makes war with the saints and
kills them.
What in history has been the greatest caster of truth to the
ground (Dan.8:12), the killer of true worshippers of God (Dan.
7:21,25), the speaker and magnifier against God (Dan.7:25; 8:11),
the prosperous and rich (Dan.8:12), the power that has preached
about the bridegroom and the bride (Rev.18:23)?

Only the civil religious Holy Roman Empire: The coming Babylon of
Revelation will be the LAST resurrection of the HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE
now forming in Europe - it will be the second Babylon of history.
And just as the original empire had a capital city (Babylon) so
too will the modern empire - the seat of all its sorceries -
the LITERAL city of Rome.

As you watch the developments in Europe, you are seeing the VERY
PROPHECIES of the Eternal God COMING TO PASS, right before your
eyes. I cannot tell you HOW LONG it will take for this LAST HOLY
ROMAN EMPIRE TO FORM AND TO FULFIL THE PROPHECIES OF THE BOOK OF
REVELATION AND DANIEL - BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT **WILL** COME
TO PASS AS GOD HAS WRITTEN, AND THEN JESUS WILL RETURN AND
ESTABLISH THE KINGDOM OF GOD ON EARTH FOR A GLORIOUS 1,000 YEARS
(please study by study called "Armageddon and the Age to Come").

ISAIAH--- A PROPHET FOR TODAY #14

Isaiah For Today #14

Chapters 57 to 60

                             Chapters 57 - 60

From the New-Living Translation

CHAPTER 57

1 The righteous pass away, the godly often die before their time.
And no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to
understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. 2
For the godly who die will rest in peace.

Here is a truth that is not a contradiction of the Bible,
just a truth as part of the whole of the Bible and the whole of
human life. Sometimes it is not the will of the Father that every
Christian lives to ripe old age. There are generalities in the
Bible, as the 3 score and 10 (70 years of age spoken about by
David in the Psalms) and by reason of strength even more, is a
generality for the span of human age. Some live to VERY OLD age -
into their late 80s or even 90s, a few to 100 and fewer yet to
over 100. How long we live is the bottom line as they say, to
what the Eternal God determines. The main thing for the child of
God is to live each day we are given as His servant, doing His
will, being more like Christ, helping and serving others in the
best way we can and with the means that the Lord has given us. To
those who are given more then more is expected. From the time you
are called to serve God, it is the QUALITY not the quantity that
counts. My friend and co-worker in the Lord, Jesse, did not live
but to be 46 years old, but in the years she was given to serve
the Lord after being called and chosen, she left a service to you
all with her website, which is on this website. There is QUALITY
in her work. For those of us who will live to see the coming of
the end of this age, the Great Tribulation, the Day of the Lord,
there will be MUCH sorrow and pain and hardship and death (as
never in human history). It will not be a pleasant sight or
experience to endure through. Those of us who die in the Lord
BEFORE that time of the end, will be spared and protected from
the evil to come. These verses here tell us that at times there
is peace and rest in death.

Idolatrous Worship Condemned

3 But you - come here, you witches' children, you offspring of
adulterers and prostitutes! 4 Whom do you mock, making faces and
sticking out your tongues? You children of sinners and liars! 5
You worship your idols with great passion beneath every green
tree. You slaughter your children as human sacrifices down in the
valleys, under overhanging rocks. 6 Your gods are the smooth
stones in the valleys. You worship them with drink offerings and
grain offerings. They, not I, are your inheritance. Does all this
make me happy? 7 You have committed adultery on the mountaintops
by worshipping idols there, and so you have been unfaithful to
me. 8 Behind closed doors, you have set up your idols and worship
them instead of me. This is adultery, for you are loving these
idols instead of loving me. You have climbed right into bed with
these detestable gods. 9 You have given olive oil and perfume to
Molech as your gift. You have travelled far, even into the world
of the dead, to find new gods to love. 10 You grew weary in your
search, but you never gave up. You strengthened yourself and went
on. 11 Why were you more afraid of them than of me? How is it
that you don't even remember me or think about me? Is it because
I have not corrected you that you have no fear of me?

This is the overall state of our peoples Israel and Judah,
the Western world in the main. We are more and more
materialistic, pleasure seeking, sports crazy, entertainment
crazy. We sacrifice our children to the sound and sight of the
TV, the Computer, the wild Music, the drinking Parties of High
Schools and Universities, the secularism and evolution of our
Education. We travel far today to export or import the evil and
sin of our de-moralized ways. We grow weary with this fad and so
look for another fad. We go into the world of the occult and the
star-gazers, the wizards and witches. We are ever, more and more,
NOT even thinking about the creator of this universe. God asks
the question that is it because we have not YET been CORRECTED by
the Lord that we have gone far from Him and His way of life. Yes,
it probably is. It is the nature of Israelites to FORGET our God
when things increase for us in a materialistic way. But this will
not go on forever. God will CORRECT!!

12 Now I will expose your so-called good deeds that you consider
so righteous. None of them will benefit or save you. 13 Let's see
if your idols can do anything for you when you cry to them for
help. They are so helpless that a breath of wind can knock them
down! But whoever trusts in me will possess the land and inherit
my holy mountain.

THE DAY OF RECKONING IS COMING. All that we have will not
save us. Even what some consider to be our righteous deeds, will
not count for anything. God says He will put our thoughts to the
test! Our thoughts of our gods that we have created in our minds
(power, might of physical arms, modern space age technology in
our machines of war etc.) will not save us when the time comes
for The Almighty to PUNISH AND CORRECT us!! We shall be like a
piece of paper in the wind - blown away, weak and helpless. But
those who will turn and trust the Lord, have living FAITH in Him,
REPENT and accept Jesus as PERSONAL Savior, shall in the end,
possess the land of promise and all the earth, nay even the whole
universe, and the very family of God.

14 I will say, "Rebuild the road! Clear away the rocks and stones
so my people can return from captivity."

Yes, as we have seen throughout the book of Isaiah, Israel
and Judah are in a state of CAPTIVITY, scattered in many nations
of the world, when Jesus returns in power and glory. The way will
be open for them to return to the land of promise, they shall
come from the east and from the west, from the north and from the
south, they shall come with WEEPING and in DEEP REPENTANCE. They
shall then KNOW that God LIVES and that He has NOT forsaken His
chosen people. They shall at last be a people that shines forth
the righteous and holy ways of God to the rest of the world as it
marches into that 1,000 years of the Kingdom of God on earth
under Jesus Christ.

God Forgives the Repentant

15 The high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, the Holy One,
says this: "I live in that high and holy place with those whose
spirits are contrite and humble. I refresh the humble and give
new courage to those with repentant hearts. 16 For I will not
fight against you forever; I will not always show my anger. If I
did, all people would pass away - all the souls I have made."

Truly, if God kept His anger and showed no mercy, not one
person would be left alive on this earth.

17 "I was angry and punished these greedy people. I withdrew
myself from them, but they went right on sinning. 18 have seen
what they do, but I will heal them anyway! I will lead them and
comfort those who mourn. 19 Then words of praise will be on their
lips. May they have peace, both near and far, for I will heal
them all," says the LORD. "But those who still reject me are like
the restless sea. It is never still but continually churns up
mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace for the wicked," says my God.

God in some ways has corrected us, He has allowed
destructions of various types to come on our towns and cities,
but such did not in any deep way, bring us back to serving the
Lord in spirit and in truth. He will punish in a final anger as
never before, yet He will also comfort them and not keep His
anger forever. God will HEAL us from our sins, although some of
us continually put out mire and dirt of sin, for them there will
be no peace, they will perish in death during the time of the
last days of this age.

True and False Worship

CHAPTER 58

58 Shout with the voice of a trumpet blast. Tell my people Israel
of their sins! 2 Yet they act so pious! They come to the Temple
every day and seem delighted to hear my laws. You would almost
think this was a righteous nation that would never abandon its
God. They love to make a show of coming to me and asking me to
take action on their behalf. 3 "We have fasted before you!" they
say. "Why aren't you impressed? We have done much penance, and
you don't even notice it!"

Oh yes, we can claim the name of being "Christian" nations,
of having an outward show of Christianity. Some sections of our
people say they go to church, want God to be a part of their
lives, desire to say we should obey the laws of God. The
"Christian" authors out there that write book after book, and
sell and sell, is large indeed. True, in some ways we have a
"righteous" exterior of Godly religion. We go through the motions
of being a righteous people, and then we wonder why God allows
sorrow to come our way.

I will tell you why! It's because you are living for yourselves
even while you are fasting. You keep right on oppressing your
workers. 4 What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and
quarrelling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere
with me. 5 You humble yourselves by going through the motions of
penance, bowing your heads like a blade of grass in the wind. You
dress in sackcloth and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what
you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the LORD?
6 "No, the kind of fasting I want calls you to free those who are
wrongly imprisoned and to stop oppressing those who work for you.
Treat them fairly and give them what they earn. 7 I want you to
share your food with the hungry and to welcome poor wanderers
into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not
hide from relatives who need your help." 8 If you do these things,
your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will
come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory
of the LORD will protect you from behind. 9 Then when you call,
the LORD will answer, "Yes, I am here," he will quickly reply.
Stop oppressing the helpless and stop making false accusations
and spreading vicious rumors! 10 Feed the hungry and help those
in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and
the darkness around you will be as bright as day. 11 The LORD
will guide you continually, watering your life when you are dry
and keeping you healthy, too. You will be like a well-watered
garden, like an ever-flowing spring. 12 Your children will
rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known
as the people who rebuild their walls and cities.

True repentance, true attitude of mind, true work of
spirituality, is serving others, giving to others as you can. Our
wealth in the Western world is so HUGE, it is mind-bending, and
we should be doing EVEN MORE than what many of us are doing to
serve the needy of our lands and of the rest of the nations that
are not in any way blessed as we are in physical wealth. If we
would stop just having an outward form of religion then God would
be on our side and would fight and protect us. We would then be
the light of the world that the Holy One originally chose us for
as we find in Deuteronomy chapter 4.

13 "Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don't pursue your own interests on
that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as
the LORD'S holy day. Honor the LORD in everything you do, and
don't follow your own desires or talk idly. If you do this, 14
the LORD will be your delight. I will give you great honor and
give you your full share of the inheritance I promised to Jacob,
your ancestor. I, the LORD, have spoken!"

Notice, the Lord picks a commandment that most would call
the very least commandment. He picks a law to do with the hours
in a week. There is a TIME, a number of hours in a seven day
period that God says are SPECIAL to Him! The human mind tends to
have trouble with this law of the Lord. We may say to ourselves,
"What's the big deal over certain 'hours' of the week?" It really
matters not how we may think on this; God has hours that are
special to Him, and He has told us to honor Him by honoring those
hours. Those hours do point to creation. Creation is the GREAT
PROOF that God DOES EXIST! We can be mystified by many things
concerning God: How can He not have a beginning?: Where did He
come from?; all this is beyond the human mind, but how can we not
still believe He does exist when we set our minds on CREATION?
THE DAY OF THE WEEK THAT LEADS US BACK TO CREATION WOULD KEEP US
FOCUSSED ON THE TRUE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE. THAT DAY THAT IS
SPECIAL TO THE LORD IS THE 7TH DAY SABBATH. In this prophecy of
the end-time, we are called to REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY IN OUR
WORK AND EVEN OUR WORDS. WE ARE PROMISED THAT IN SO DOING WE
SHALL BE GIVEN HONOR. WE HONOR HIM AND HE HONORS US BY KEEPING
THE SABBATH DAY HOLY.

Warnings against Sin

CHAPTER 59

1 Listen! The LORD is not too weak to save you, and he is not
becoming deaf. He can hear you when you call. 2 But there is a
problem - your sins have cut you off from God. Because of your
sin, he has turned away and will not listen anymore.

There is a KEY to having God hear you! It has to do with
SIN! It is sin that cuts you off from the Eternal One. When the
Lord reveals to you what sin is, you have a greater
accountability. Our nations have KNOWN what sin is! We were
founded on the Bible, and the Bible has revealed to us what is
sin. We once could say with assurance this was sin or that was
sin, but now that we have turned our back of the Bible we no
longer can determine sin. Hence we now call good evil and evil we
call good. We once KNEW that practicing homosexuality and
lesbianism was SIN, but now we legalize same sex marriages! We
could KNOW when life begins by letting the Bible reveal it to us,
but we now KILL tens of thousands of un-born children every year!
We have in our actions turned God away from us, and we wonder why
we have such sorrow and pain and suffering. The bottom line is we
have it because of SIN!

3 Your hands are the hands of murderers, and your fingers are
filthy with sin. Your mouth is full of lies, and your lips are
tainted with corruption.

Pretty plain words from God as to some of our sins!

4 No one cares about being fair and honest. Their lawsuits are
based on lies. They spend their time plotting evil deeds and then
doing them. 5 They spend their time and energy spinning evil
plans that end up in deadly actions. 6 They cheat and shortchange
everyone. Nothing they do is productive; all their activity is
filled with sin. Violence is their trademark. 7 Their feet run to
do evil, and they rush to commit murder. They think only about
sinning. Wherever they go, misery and destruction follow them. 8
They do not know what true peace is or what it means to be just
and good. They continually do wrong, and those who follow them
cannot experience a moment's peace.

Not a lot of clarity is needed by me here for you to
understand many of our nation's sins, and what the Holy One is
telling us.

9 It is because of all this evil that deliverance is far from us.
That is why God doesn't punish those who injure us. No wonder we
are in darkness when we expected light. No wonder we are walking
in the gloom. 10 No wonder we grope like blind people and stumble
along. Even at brightest noontime, we fall down as though it were
dark. No wonder we are like corpses when compared to vigorous
young men! 11 We growl like hungry bears; we moan like mournful
doves. We look for justice, but it is nowhere to be found. We
look to be rescued, but it is far away from us. 12 For our sins
are piled up before God and testify against us. Yes, we know what
sinners we are 13 We know that we have rebelled against the LORD.
We have turned our backs on God. We know how unfair and
oppressive we have been, carefully planning our deceitful lies.
14 Our courts oppose people who are righteous, and justice is
nowhere to be found. Truth falls dead in the streets, and
fairness has been outlawed. 15 Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who
tries to live a godly life is soon attacked.

More plain truth words from our God. He here really lays
down our sins in no uncertain terms. Our lands are full of all
these sins.

The LORD looked and was displeased to find that there was no
justice. 16 He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help
the oppressed. So he himself stepped in to save them with his
mighty power and justice. 17 He put on righteousness as his body
armor and placed the helmet of salvation on his head. He clothed
himself with the robes of vengeance and godly fury. 18 He will
repay his enemies for their evil deeds. His fury will fall on his
foes in distant lands. 19 Then at last they will respect and
glorify the name of the LORD throughout the world. For he will
come like a flood tide driven by the breath of the LORD. 20 "The
Redeemer will come to Jerusalem," says the LORD, "to buy back
those in Israel who have turned from their sins. 21 And this
is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit will not
leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They
will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your
children's children forever. I the LORD, have spoken!"

Those who will TURN from their sins, God will honor by
giving them His Spirit, and they and their children will serve
the Eternal forever. The day of reckoning is coming. Those who
will not repent of sin will be dealt with in no uncertain way.
The Lord will not shut His eyes from the evil and sin of the
world. A day of JUDGMENT will come, for now the Lord is patient,
giving time to see if the people of Israel and other nations will
HUMBLY REPENT! Those that will, will be blessed, those that do
not, will see destruction come upon them.

Future Glory for Jerusalem

CHAPTER 60

1 Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all the nations to
see! For the glory of the LORD is shining upon you. 2 Darkness as
black as night will cover all the nations of the earth, but the
glory of the LORD will shine over you. 3 All nations will come to
your light. Mighty kings will come to see your radiance. 4 Look
and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are coming from
distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home. 5 Your
eyes will shine, and your hearts will thrill with joy, for
merchants from around the world will come to you. They will bring
you the wealth of many lands. 6 Vast caravans of camels will
converge on you, the camels of Midian and Ephah. From Sheba they
will bring gold and incense for the worship of the LORD. 7 The
flocks of Kedar will be given to you, and the rams of Nebaioth
will be brought for my altars. In that day I will make my Temple
glorious.

This cannot be said about the Jews in the land of Palestine
today. It is a promise of the beginning of the age to come. The
age when Jesus will return to bring out the children of Israel
from the lands of their enemies.

8 And what do I see flying like clouds to Israel, like doves to
their nests? 9 They are the ships of Tarshish, reserved to bring
the people of Israel home. They will bring their wealth with
them, and it will bring great honor to the LORD your God, the
Holy One of Israel, for he will fill you with splendor. 10
Foreigners will come to rebuild your cities. Kings and rulers
will send you aid. For though I have destroyed you in my anger, I
will have mercy on you through my grace. 11 Your gates will stay
open around the clock to receive the wealth of many lands. The
kings of the world will be led as captives in a victory
procession. 12 For the nations that refuse to be your allies will
be destroyed. 13 The glory of Lebanon will be yours - the forests
of cypress, fir, and pine - to beautify my sanctuary. My Temple
will be glorious!

Once more, this CANNOT be said to have taken place. It
cannot refer to the Jews coming back to the land of promise in
the last 100 years or so. It is referring to the time at the
beginning of the 1,000 year age when the people of Israel and
Judah are restored to Jerusalem and the promised land. It is the
time when any nation NOT honoring the people of Israel shall have
destruction upon them. It will be the time of the construction of
the NEW TEMPLE of God in Jerusalem - the Temple of Ezekiel
chapters 40 to 48.

14 The children of your tormentors will come and bow before you.
Those who despised you will kiss your feet. They will call you
the City of the LORD, and Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Again, this has NEVER yet been fulfilled, it will be when
the new age comes and Jesus is King in Jerusalem.

15 Though you were once despised and hated and rebuffed by all,
you will be beautiful forever. You will be a joy to all
generations, for I will make you so. 16 Powerful kings and mighty
nations will bring the best of their goods to satisfy your every
need. You will know at last that I, the LORD, am your Savior and
Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel. 17 I will exchange your
bronze for gold, your iron for silver, your wood for bronze, and
your stones for iron. Peace and righteousness will be your
leaders! 18 Violence will disappear from your land; the
desolation and destruction of war will end. Salvation will
surround you like city walls, and praise will be on the lips of
all who enter there.

And again, the words are plain, in no way can this prophecy
be said to have already taken place. Violence has NOT disappeared
from Jerusalem or the promised land. War has not ended for the
peoples of Israel and Judah. Many are still loosing their lives
in wars. Salvation cannot be said to be like towering city walls.
Nations of the world are not bringing the best of their goods to
Jerusalem. Many in Israel do NOT KNOW that God is the Lord and
Savior, most of Israel and Judah are blinded to salvation through
the Mighty One of Israel. This prophecy is for the age to come.

19 No longer will you need the sun or moon to give you light, for
the LORD your God will be your everlasting light, and he will be
your glory. 20 The sun will never set; the moon will not go down.
For the LORD will be your everlasting light. Your days of
mourning will come to an end. 21 "All your people will be
righteous. They will possess their land forever, for I will plant
them there with my own hands in order to bring myself glory. 22
The smallest family will multiply into a large clan. The tiniest
group will become a mighty nation. I, the LORD, will bring it all
to pass at the right time."

It is CLEARLY speaking about a NEW AGE! It is NOT for this
age that all this prophecy concerns. It is concerning the NEW AGE
TO COME. Beyond all the sorrow, pain, destruction, death, there
will come THE DELIVER - Jesus the Christ, who will come to set up
the Kingdom of God on earth, who will come to RESTORE Israel and
Judah, to bring them back from the lands of their enemies, to
establish them in the Promised Land, to build them again, to pour
out His Spirit on them, to bless them, to finally make them into
the LIGHT of the world for all other nations to model themselves
after.

What wonderful words of prophecy are contained in the book
of Isaiah. Some concerning the Messiah that DID ALREADY COME in
the form of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, to be the Savior of all
people, and some concerning the Jesus Christ who WILL COME as
KING and LORD, to reign over the nations for 1,000 glorious
years.

     So COME Lord Jesus, come!

                           .....................
