IT WAS HARDER FOR ME TO LEAVE MY DAD THIS TIME AROUND.
WE HAD SOME GOOD TIME LAST WEEK WHILE I WAS WITH HIM.
I TOLD HIM I'D BE BACK IN A FEW MONTHS. HE WAS SO SAD IT WOULD BE A FEW MONTHS. HIS SHORT TIME MEMORY HAS NOW PROBABLY FORGOTTEN OUR PARTING WORDS, AND THAT IS A BLESSING FOR HIM.
I WAS AN ONLY CHILD, THOUGH MY PARENTS DID TRY FOR A BROTHER OR SISTER FOR ME; MOM HAD A MISCARRIAGE AND THAT WAS IT SHE SAID, SO NEVER DID GET A BROTHER OR SISTER.
UNTIL I WAS 11 YEARS OLD DAD WORKED A NIGHT SHIFT 6 PM TO 6 AM AND OFTEN NO DAYS OFF FOR 9 MONTHS....UNREAL! HENCE I WAS VERY CLOSE TO MOM, IN THE EVENINGS TOGETHER, TALKING ABOUT THIS OR THAT, WATCHING SOME NICE TV SHOWS, AND SAD ROMANTIC MOVIES, AND WE'D BOTH BE SHEDDING TEARS. AH THEY WERE GOOD YEARS THOSE YEARS WITH JUST EVENINGS WITH MOM.
I WAS NOT SPOILT AS AN ONLY CHILD; DID NOT GET EVERYTHING I MAYBE WANTED; I WANTED SO MUCH ONE OF THOSE HORSES ON SPRING THAT WERE MADE BACK THEN; NEVER GOT IT; BUT I FINALLY DID GET MY BIKE, HAD TO WAIT FOR IT A NUMBER OF YEARS. YES HAD MY SOCCER BOOTS [WAY DIFFERENT THEN THAN THEY ARE NOW] AND CRICKET BAT; HAD MY ELECTRIC TRAIN SET; HAD MY FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AT AGE 8, A UKE-BANJO; LIKE A FOUR STRING TENOR BANJO BUT A SHORTER NECK. THEN AT AGE 11 WANTED THIS GUITAR I SAW IN THE MUSIC SHOP; DAD SAID, "WELL YOU GET POCKET MONEY, SO SAVE UP FOR IT." I DID, AND IT WAS FINALLY MINE. I WAS IN THE BOY SCOUTS AND DAD AND MOM BOUGHT ME THE SCOUT CLOTHES THAT I LOVED TO WEAR, KINDA THE NEXT BEST THING TO COWBOY CLOTHES I THOUGHT.
I REALLY APPRECIATED HOW THEY RAISED ME, TO RESPECT ALL ELDERS, BE COURTEOUS AND POLITE, HAVE GOOD MANNERS, WHEN IN OTHER PEOPLE'S HOME DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING THAT IS NOT YOURS, EVEN ONLY SPEAK WHEN SPOKEN TO. I APPRECIATED THEY SENT ME TO A CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL WHERE THE BIBLE WAS THE FIRST HALF HOUR LESSON EACH MORNING. THERE WAS THE WONDERFUL HOLIDAY TIMES AT THE SEA-SIDE. THERE WAS THE ENGLISH SOCCER LEAGUE FINAL [THE SUPER-BOWL OF SOCCER] DAD AND I WOULD WATCH, AND HOW WE'D COMMENT ON THAT GREAT MOVE OR PASS [I WAS CAPTAIN OF MY HIGH-SCHOOL SOCCER TEAM].
WELL I LOOK BACK NOW..... MY PARENTS WERE GOOD, AND THOUGH NOT SPOILT, I HAD THINGS THAT WERE ALL I NEEDED FOR MY GROWING UP YEARS. YES THEY WERE GOOD YEARS. OH YES I HAD AN PELLET AIR-RIFLE, AND DAD AND I WOULD TAGET SHOOT; I BECAME QUITE THE SHOT, ONCE SPLIT IN TWO A WOODEN MATCH-STICK AT TEN STRIDES AWAY. ONE TIME AT A FARE, I WAS ABOUT 11 OR 12, I WENT TO THE PELLET RIFLE GAME; THERE WAS A RED BULLS-EYE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DIME, YOU WERE GIVEN A NUMBER OF PELLETS [FORGOT HOW MANY] AND YOU WERE TO SHOOT OUT THE RED EYE. MY DAD AND OTHERS WERE WATCHING. I SHOT IT OUT WITH ONLY THE SLIGHTEST PART OF RED ON A PART OF THE EYE, PRETTY WELL 99.9 PERCENT GONE. MY DAD AND OTHERS STANDING THERE WERE THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED I WAS NOT GIVEN THE PRIZE, AND TOLD THE OWNER SO.
I'D HELP MOM AROUND THE HOUSE AND HELP DAD LOOK AFTER THE YARD, HEDGE, LAWN AND STUFF. DAD WOULD ALWAYS HAVE A BIG REEL-TO-REEL RECORDER AND WE'D SPEND HOURS RECORDING AND LISTENING TO MUSIC; DAD COULD PLAY THE SPOONS IN REAL SUPER RHYTHM TO SOME OF THE SWING AND BEAT MUSIC.
WE HAD A RECORD MACHINE, THE OLD CARBON 78 RECORDS, HAD MANY OF THEM, ESPECIALLY SLIM WHITMAN, AND MOM AND I WOULD LISTEN FOR HOURS TO SLIM SING HIS LOVE SONGS AND COWBOY YODELING SONGS.
MY OH MY THEY WERE GOOD OLD SIMPLE DAYS BACK THEN; KIDS WERE NOT AFRAID TO PLAY OUTSIDE, AND PARENTS DID NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BAD PERVERTED PEOPLE GETTING THEIR CHILDREN.
MY DAD ENCOURAGED ME TO SEND FOR THE CHALES ATLAS "HEALTH AND STRENGTH COURSE."
THERE WAS MUCH MORE MY PARENTS DID FOR ME AND HELPED ME IN VARIOUS WAYS ALL OF MY LIFE. MOM DIED IN 1994. I CONDUCTED HER FUNERAL SERVICE.
SO WHEN I THINK OF ALL THOSE MEMORIES AS A KID, AND THE REST OF MY ADULT MEMORIES WITH MY MOM AND DAD .... YES IT WAS HARD THIS TIME AROUND HAVING TO LEAVE DAD FOR ANOTHER TWO OR THREE MONTHS..... WE HAD A GOOD TIME TOGETHER AND HE WAS REALLY HAPPY AND APPRECIATIVE OF IT ALL.
I CAN ONLY CONTINUE TO PRAY GOD WILL GRANT HIM YET MORE YEARS OF LIFE, SO WE CAN ENJOY MORE GOOD TIMES TOGETHER.
