AMERICAN BLACK HISTORY #2....FIRST BLACK POET
PAUL LAWRENCE DUNBAR - 1872 - 1906
AMERICA'S FIRST BLACK POET
"MY PARENTS INTRODUCED ME TO THE MAJIC OF WORDS. MY MOTHER MATILDER DUNBAR WAS BORN A SLAVE. AT 17 SHE RAN AWAY TO OHIO. JOSEPH DUNBAR MY FATHER WAS ALSO BORN A SLAVE. HE ESCAPED TO CANADA. IN 1863 HE RETURNED AND JOINED THE UNION ARMY. MY PARENTS TAUGHT THEMSELVES TO READ AND WRITE; WHAT THEY LACKED IN SOPHISTICATION THEY MADE UP FOR WITH MOTHER WIT.
I WAS BORN INTO THE FIRST GENERATION OF BLACK MEN BORN FREE IN THE UNITED STATES. AT THAT TIME OUR PEOPLE HAD NO LAND, NO GOOD JOBS, OR EDUCATION. MY PARENTS WANTED ME TO BECOME A LAWYER OR MINISTER; SOMEONE WHO COULD SPEAK FOR OUR PEOPLE.
THE PREPARATION FOR MY LIFES WORK STARTED AT HOME. MY MOTHER WAS MY FIRST TEACHER. WITH THE LIGHT BETWEEN ME AND HER IRONING BOARD SHE DRILLED ME WITH MY LETTERS. SHE MADE EVERY LETTER COME ALIVE, WITH HER IMITATION OF THE SLAVE OWNERS, AND WITH THE THINGS SHE'D HEARD AND SEEN WHILE ON THE PLANTATION. MY MOTHER HAD AN INTUITIVE FEELING FOR LITERATURE.
SOMETIMES I WOULD READ THE STORY AND TELL IT TO HER. OTHERTIMES I'D READ ALOUD TO HER. WHICHEVER WAY I DID IT, SHE IN HER OWN WITTY WAY WOULD MAKE A CRITICAL COMMENT, WHICH WOULD DEEPEN MY UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT I'D JUST READ.
IT MADE ME WORK HARDER TO MAKE MY ASSIGNMENTS THE BEST IN THE CLASS.
IN HIGH SCHOOL I TOOK A PREPARATORY COURSE FOR COLLEGE. MY INTEREST IN ENGLISH HELPED ME BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE LITERARY SOCIETY, EDITOR OF THE SCHOOL PAPER, AND AUTHOR OF THE WORDS FOR OUR CLASS SONG.
MY PLANS TO GO TO COLLEGE HAD TO BE SET ASIDE, WHEN MY FATHER DIED. I HAD TO GET A JOB TO HELP SUPPORT MY MOTHER.
WHEN I ANSWERED ADS IN NEWSPAPERS, EMPLOYERS TOLD ME, 'WE WANT A WHITE BOY. THIS IS A WHITE MAN'S JOB. WE DON'T HIRE NIGGERS.'
THE ONLY JOB I COULD FIND PAID $4 FOR A SIX DAY WEEK. HAVING TO TAKE A MENIAL JOB MADE ME REALIZE MY DILEMMA. I HAD TO DECIDE WHETHER TO GO THROUGH LIFE AS AN ELEVATOR OPERATOR, OR TO FIND SOME WAY TO FULFIL MY AMBITION. SO I WORKED ON MY STORIES AND POEMS. I WANTED TO BECOME A WRITER.
I WOULD INTERPRET OUR EXPERIENCES IN STORIES AND SONGS; TO PROVE TO THE MANY WE ARE MORE HUMAN THAN BLACK.
THE PUBLICATION OF MY FIRST BOOK OPENED A NEW WORLD TO ME. MY POETRY APPEARED IN LITERARY JOURNALS. A LEADING CRITIC WROTE: 'PAUL LAWRENCE DUNBAR IS AMERICA'S FIRST BLACK POET. DUNBAR'S PARENTS WERE BLACK WITHOUT ANY MIXTURE OF WHITE BLOOD. SO FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER DUNBAR IS THE ONLY MAN OF PURE AFRICAN BLOOD AND OF AMERICAN CIVILIZATION TO FEEL BLACK LIFE ESTHETICALLY, AND TO EXPRESS IT LYRICALLY. '
MY SUCCESS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO GIVE TO MY FAMILY SOME OF THE COMFORTS OF LIFE. MY HOME BECAME A CENTER, IT WAS WRITTEN ABOUT WHAT A BLACK MAN COULD ACHIEVE IN AMERICA.
ALL WHO WROTE ABOUT MY WORK LAY SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON MY DIALECT POETRY. UNFORTUNATELY DIALECT HAD BECOME THE LANGUAGE OF BUFFOONERY. I DIDN'T WANT TO BE KNOWN AS A DIALECT POET. I HAD USED IT FIRST THINKING OF MY OWN PEOPLE. WHEN IT WAS GIVEN TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, I'D HOPED SOME AMONG THE GENERAL PUBLIC WOULD UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE SPEAKING IN MY VERSES WERE REAL HUMAN BEINGS HONESTLY EXPRESSING THEIR PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE. WHAT I DISCOVERED TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD WAS DIALECT WAS A QUE FOR LAUGHTER. I WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THEM THINK."
