ON THE CBC RADIO THIS EVENING WAS A VERY INTERESTING PROGRAM.
IT WAS ABOUT WHY IN THE WESTERN WORLD WE ARE HEAVIER THAN EVER AND FAR TOO MANY OF US ARE ADDICTED TO FOODS THAT ARE NOT GOOD FOR US.
ONE MAN POINTED OUT THAT THE FAMOUS NAME "KELLOGG" - THE BREAKFAST CEREAL GIANT, STARTED OUT TO MAKE A CEREAL THAT WAS VERY HEALTHY FOR YOU; BUT LIKE SO MANY OTHERS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, BIG BUSINESS AND PROFITS TOOK OVER.
COMPANIES GOT TO FIGURE OUT THAT ADDING SOME SUGAR.....WELL IT WOULD GET OUR SUGAR GLANS CATCHING ON, AND THE WAVE OF POPULARITY WOULD MUSHROOM.
THEY DISCOVERED THAT WE HAVE A PEAK OF "SUGAR" LIKINGS IN OUR BODY THAT REACHES A PEAK....THEN..... WELL HE ILLUSTRATED THIS WAY. YOU CAN ADD A LITTLE SUGAR TO COFFEE, AND STILL LIKE IT, THEN ADD SOME MORE AND STILL LIKE IT, BUT ADDING TOO MUCH AND.....YUK!! WE DON'T LIKE IT.
SO THEY PUT IN A LITTLE SUGAR INTO ALL KINDS OF PROCESSED FOODS, YOU'D NEVER EXPECT SUGAR TO BE IN. I HAD TO LOOK AT 4 TINS OF PEAS BEFORE I FOUND ONE THAT ONLY CONTAINED "PEAS AND WATER." THE OTHERS HAD SUGAR IN THEM.
THEN THE OTHER "SNAG YOU" IS SALT....... YES THOSE 3 TINS OF PEAS WITH SUGAR ALSO CONTAINED SALT.
SO OVER THE PAST DECADES THE FOOD INDUSTRY HAS REALLY WORKED HARD TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WILL HOOK YOU.
THEY ALSO DISPLAY THE FOOD RACKS IN GROCERY STORES WITH CHILD TO ADULT IN MIND; PUTTING THINGS TO CATCH THE EYE OF CHILDREN LOWER DOWN, THAN THE EYE CATCHING STUFF FOR ADULTS.
OF COURSE THE RADIO DOCUMENTARY TOLD ABOUT ALL THE DOZENS AND DOZENS OF FOOD STUFF THAT THEY HAVE "INVENTED" IN MODERN TIMES, THAT WERE JUST NOT THERE 60, 70, 80 OR 100 YEARS AGO. COMMONLY NOW CALLED "JUNK FOODS." AND OF COURSE ALL THE SODA POPS WITH MORE SUGAR IN THEM THAN ANYONE WOULD EVER GUESS.
THEY BROUGHT OUT THAT HAVING SODA POP DOES NOT MAKE YOU EAT LESS IN A DAY. SOME THINK THAT INITIAL BLOTTING FEELING FROM SODA POP WOULD MAKE YOU EAT LESS; THE FACTS ARE IT DOES NOT, IN THE STUDIES THEY HAVE DONE.
THEY DID TESTS LIKE PUTTING A BOWL OF CANDIES/CHOCOLATES ON A WORKERS DESK AND PUTTING THE SAME BOWL 6 OR 7 FEET AWAY. THE PEOPLE WHO HAD TO MOVE 6 OR 7 FEET FOR THE CANDY.....THEY ATE LESS THAN THOSE WHO HAD THE CANDY BOWL ON THEIR DESK. ACTUALLY THE HAVING TO MOVE TO GET THE CANDY WAS NOT SO MUCH THE DETERRENT TO EAT THEM, BUT IT ACTUALLY GAVE THE TIME FOR THE PERSON TO THINK "DO I REALLY NEED TO EAT SO MANY." AND THEY SO DID NOT. THE ONES WITH THE CANDY BOWL ON THE DESK, EVEN IF THEY DID NOT EAT THAT MANY, WOULD STILL CONSUME THE CALORIES IN A YEAR, THAT WOULD ADD 18 POUNDS TO THEIR WEIGHT.
THEN THERE IS "FAT" IN THINGS, AGAIN THINGS WE WOULD NOT REALLY THINK CONTAINED FAT PER SE. MORE MANIPULATION BY THE FOOD INDUSTRY.
THEY TALKED ABOUT ALL THE PROCESSED GRAIN PRODUCTS..... EMPTY OF REAL NUTRITION, BUT HIGH IN CALORIES.
THEY TALKED ABOUT THE COMBINATION OF THINGS. SO YOU GO TO THE MOVIE THEATER. YOU BUY A BIG BAG OF POPCORN; IT HAS SALT IN IT, EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO BUTTER ON THE POPCORN; SO OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO BUY A BIG SODA DRINK TO OFF-SET THE SALTY POPCORN. AND YOU KNOW HOW THE THEATER PEOPLE..... WELL GET POPCORN, DRINK, AND SOME CANDY BAR FOR LESS MONEY WHEN THE THREE ARE BOUGHT TOGETHER. MORE SLICK ADVERTISING TO MORE CALORIE INTAKE, SUGAR AND SALT TAKING ITS HOLD ON YOU.
THEY TALKED ABOUT FAT AND SUGAR AND INSULIN. GOT QUITE TECHNICAL IN THAT PART OF THE DOCUMENTARY. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE; WHEN YOU COMBINE THE ABOVE, YOUR BODY IS MESSED UP AND STORES UP FAT INSTEAD OF NOT STORING IT UP...... BINGO..... MORE WEIGHT ADDED TO YOUR INCREASING WEIGHT..... HENCE WE HAVE A WESTERN WORLD OF MORE OVER-WEIGHT AND OBESE CHILDREN AND ADULTS THAN EVER BEFORE.
OF COURSE NOT GETTING REAL EXERCISE, BUT A GENERATION OF PUT YOUR FEET UP AND WATCH TV SHOWS WHILE EATING THIS AND THAT, HAS ALSO BROUGHT US TO OUR PRESENT SITUATION OF OUR WEIGHT PROBLEMS.
WITH ALL OF THIS WE THEN HAVE MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS JUST FROM WRONG DIET LIVING AND OVER-WEIGHTINESS. WHICH THEN MEANS OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS COST US MORE AND MORE MONEY TO RUN.
WELL THERE MAY BE NO TURNING BACK OUR NATION'S CLOCK ON THE OUTRAGEOUS FOOD INDUSTRY; BUT YOU CAN DETERMINE TO LIVE DIFFERENTLY THAN WHAT MOST ARE LIVING IN THIS PHYSICAL LIFE.
