THE STORY OF MICHAL..... KING DAVID'S FIRST WIFE
I AM SURPRISED HOW SOME COMMENTATORS ON THE BIBLE CAN GET THINGS MIXED UP.
TODAY, THANKS TO DR. JAMES STRONG, WE HAVE A CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE, GIVING EVERY PLACE A BIBLE WORD IS USED. HENCE VERY EASY TO LOOK UP ALL VERSES CONCERNING MICHAL - THE FIRST WIFE OF KING DAVID.
SO LET'S BEGIN.
1 SAMUEL 14:49
Now the sons of Saul were..... and the names of the two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.
Nothing unusual here, pretty hard to get anything wrong from this verse; Michal was the second born daughter to king Saul. The younger daughter of the two daughters born to king Saul.
I SAMUEL 18:20
And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
Nothing hard to understand here also; very simple: Michal it is written, loved David.
1 SAMUEL 18:27
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
Here we are told in simple language that Michal became David's wife.
But it is the verses between 20 and 27 we need to note.
Verse 20; Saul was pleased when he knew Michal loved David. Why you may ask?
The answer is verses 21 "And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefor Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son-in-law..... [going on] And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Communicate with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king's son-in-law. And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Does it seem a light thing to you that I be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am poor, and lightly esteemed? And the servants of Saul told him, saying, This is what David answered. And Saul said, This you shall say to David: The king desired not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king'd enemies. But Saul to make David wall by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law.
We are then told David with his men departed and got the 100 foreskins from Philistines.
There is NO deception here from David in any way. It is clearly Saul who was in the manner of deception..... he wanted David dead. Nothing here to say David was deceiving Michal into marriage. True it does not say, "And David loved Michal" in so many words, but you do not lay your life on the ground, and go out and do the thing David did for a dowry, and not have some feeling for the daughter king Saul was willing to give in marriage to David. She was obviously in looks and personality, someone David could enjoy as a wife; as he was willing to go to the life and death task of collecting 100 Philistines foreskins. Often our love for someone is shown in actions and perhaps not in words per se.
The deception here was on Saul's part and not at all on David's part!
1 SAMUEL 18: 28
And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter love him.
So far we have no action on Michal's part to demonstrate she loved David; we are just told she did. David has shown in actions that he had enough feeling for Michal to lay his life on the line. You do not do what David did for someone you have no interest in at all in taking in marriage. David's love was demonstrated in actions.
1 Samuel 19: 11, 12, 13, 17, 17
Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If you do not save your life to night, to,orrow you shall be killed. So Michal let David down through a window; and he went, and fled, and escaped. And Michal took an image, and layed it in the bed, and put a pillow of goat's hair for his pillow, and covered it a cloth. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick. And Saul sent again the messengers to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him. And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goat's hair for his bolster. And Saul said unto Michal, Why have you deceived me so, and sent away my enemy, that he has escaped? And Michael answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill you?
This is all pretty simple to understand. Michal here shows her love for David in actions. She saves his life. It again was Saul who was after the life of David, using whatever means he could. Yes Michal lied to her Father in the way she answered. We see David had no deception of any kind towards Michal or Saul; he simply fled for his life, and that through the information given to him by Michal.
1 SAMUEL 25: 44
And Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife. to Phalu the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
Certainly here there is no deception or wrong doing from David towards Saul or Michal. Again it was Saul doing the evil and the wrong behind David's back.
2 Samuel 3: 13, 14
And he said, Well; I will make a league with you: but one thing I require of you, that is, You shall not see my face, except you first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when you come to see my face. And David sent messengers to Ishbothesh Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I spoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
Nothing evil or deceiving here on David's part; he just wanted his wife back. This surely shows David had some feeling for Michal his wife. Someone who could care less about his wife would not have undertaken that part of the deal David was willing to do, was first based upon David getting back his wife Michal. Nothing here but good on David's part.
2 SAMUEL 6: 16
And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she DESPISED HIM IN HER HEART.
Nothing here about it being wrong for David to rejoice in this manner before the Lord. No deception on David's part; no "not liking" his wife Michal. BUT it was Michal who DESPISED David in her heart.
2 SAMUEL 6: 20, 21, 23
Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself1 And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which shose me....therefore I will play before the Lord...... Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children unto the day of her death.
Here it was no sin, no evil, no error, on David's part. No correction coming from God to say David did wrong in dancing as he did. It is very clear Michal was in the wrong. This was obviously a deep despising by Michal towards David. A huge rift between them came at this point. We are not told the two of them had troubles before this event, and so anything about their relationship to this event, would be pure speculation. In an age when God ALLOWED EASY divorce, what David did should not shock anyone. It does not say he "put her away" or "divorced" her. It obviously says David was not going to have children from her. It does not say Michal wanted a divorce; by staying as a technical wife of David, she would have been physically looked after very well.
So to this event there is nothing but good from David and Michal...... we are not told of any troubles between them until this act of David dancing before the Lord; which we are told, Michal despised David in her heart, words that covey a very deep mental and emotional rift towards David.
1 CHRONICLES 15: 29
And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul, looking out through a window, saw David dancing and playing; and she DESPISED him in her heart.
Same situation as we have already seen.
2 SAMUEL 21: 8
.... AND THE FIVE SONS OF MICHAL the daughter of Saul......
Barnes' Bible Commentary says: An obvious error for Merab (see 1 Sam. 18: 19 note)
In 1 Sam. 18:19 [ But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adreil the Meholathite to wife] we read from the same Bible Commentary: The five sons of this marriage perished by the hands of the Gibeonites (marg. ref.) where we learn further that the name of Adreil's father, or ancestor, was Barzillai. His birth-place was Meholah, probably the same as Abel-Meholah (see 1 Kings 19:16 note).
THERE IT IS; ALL THE PLACES IN THE BIBLE WHERE THE WORD MICHAL IS USED.
DO YOU SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO STUDY A PARTICULAR TOPIC IN THE BIBLE; YOU GET ALL THE VERSES TOGETHER ON THAT TOPIC, USING A BOOK LIKE "STRONG'S CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE."
DO YOU SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO STUDY A PARTICULAR TOPIC IN THE BIBLE; YOU GET ALL THE VERSES TOGETHER ON THAT TOPIC, USING A BOOK LIKE "STRONG'S CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE."
WITHOUT ADDING TO WHAT THE BIBLE HAS WRITTEN [ WHICH MANY JEWISH RABBIS OFTEN DO WITH THEIR "WHATEVERS" HANDED DOWN "TRADITIONS" OF THIS AND THAT] WE SEE THE CLEAR VERSES ARE CLEAR. WE ARE TOLD HOW MICHAL BECAME DAVID'S WIFE; AND TOLD WHY DAVID PUT HER AWAY FROM HIM SO SHE BORE NO CHILDREN FATHERED BY DAVID. THERE IS NO "POLITICAL" ANYTHING IN THIS STORY. DAVID DID NOT TAKE MICHAL FOR A WIFE FOR POLITICAL REASONS. THE ONLY CLOSE TO ANYTHING POLITICAL WAS DAVID DEMANDING HE HAVE HIS WIFE MICHAL BACK, IF HE WAS GOING TO DO A BARGAIN CONTRACT WITH A CERTAIN GUY.
UNDER ALL THE "ALLOWABLES" THAT WERE PART OF THE OLD COVENANT WITH ISRAEL, DAVID HAD THE RIGHT, WAS ALLOWED, TO DEAL WITH MICHAL AS HE SAW FIT, FROM THE TIME SHE DESPISED HIM IN HER HEART. DAVID WAS NOT CORRECTED BY GOD OR ANY OF THE LORD'S PROPHETS FOR SO DEALING WITH MICHAL. DAVID WAS SEVERELY CORRECTED IN HIS WRONG AND SINFUL WAY WITH BATHSHEBA AND HER HUSBAND.
SO IT IS WRITTEN AND SO IT WAS.
