And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. 12. Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. 14. And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. 15. Where is then the blessedness ye speke of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. 16. I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. 8. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. 23. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: 24. Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. 25. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; 26. I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 5. Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father: 4. Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. 1 Thess. 2:7. We were, gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: 8. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. 11. Ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father, doth his children, 12. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 17. We, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. 18. Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. 19. What is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? 20. For ye are our glory and joy. 1 Thess. 3:5. When I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. 7. For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God, 10. Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith? 12. The Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all nzen, even as we do toward you. 1 Thess. 5:8. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; 11. Comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. 14. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the fee- bleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 2 Thess. 1:4. We ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure. Tim. 1:5. The end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. 1 Tim. 5:9. Let not a widow, be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10. Well reported of for good works; if she have ... lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 1 Tim. 6:2. They that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. 11. Follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 2 Tim. 1:3. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; 4. Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; 8. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner. 2 Tim. 2:10. I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. Philem. 8. Though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, 9. Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. 12. Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: 16. Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? 17. If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. 18. If he bath wronged thee, or oweth thee aught, put that on mine account, 19. I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. 20. Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. 21. Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. Heb. 5:2. Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way, for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. Heb. 6:9. Beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. Heb. 13:1. Let brotherly love continue. 2. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them: and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. 22. I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation for I have written a letter unto you in few words. Jas. 1:27. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this. To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. .......... NOTE: Ah indeed the MANY verses in the Bible on the subject of LOVE! It is not always easy to obtain the mark of following in spirit and action all those verses. We are still flesh, and the weakness of the flesh sometimes gains the upper-hand, and we do not love as we should. I think the hardest part of love is loving our enemies or those who do us wrong, harm, or just do not like us for whatever reason. Such situations can happen "in the church" and I have written articles to help us solve our "love problems" with even brethren. It can be yet still harder when we have enemies that are not in the church. To feel bitterness, un-righteous anger, revenge of different sorts, can all be a part of human nature that wants to be un-loving. We must at these times really seek the Lord, pray for strength to put away hard feelings towards our enemies. We must cry out for the peace of God to fill our heart and mind. We must try and remember that most of our enemies are spiritually blinded, they are also filled with human nature that if not guided by the Spirit of God, they just let run amuck, and that can express itself in words and actions that are anything but nice towards us. We have to remember we need to forgive for as Jesus said, if we cannot forgive how can we expect God the Father to forgive us. To be more loving we need to admit to ourselves we are not being loving .... it's taking an honest look at ourselves, when in a unloving mind-set, and acknowledging we have a wrong attitude. That is the first step to putting away an un-loving spirit. Then we must repent of it, even asking God to give us the attitude of a forgiving spirit and true repentance of our sin of an un-loving mind-set. Some of the physical things we can do when we feel we have not love in our attitude: sit and listen to soft relaxing music; if the weather is nice, go out in the country or into a lovely park, and soak in the beauty of nature; if the weather is not good for that, watch a nice DVD movie on the nature of our wonderful planet. On yes, maybe you'd like to relax in the bathtub while listening to soft soothing music. Think about all the positive things going for you in life, and the people who do love you. Maybe sit and read the Psalms and certainly for most of us, we can realize we nowhere near have the un-loving enemies in our life that king David had in his lifetime. And we can read the inspiring and uplifting Psalms, which are many. We could also use good funny movies to help us change our mind- set if we find ourselves with an un-loving attitude. Being around our friends that are positive and happy and fun-loving people, helps to cast off the burden of the sin of an un-loving nature. If you cannot put yourself in their company for whatever reason, then a good funny movie will help you - laughter and fun helps to bring in the good emotions in our heart and mind. We also have to reduce STRESS in our lives to kick-off the blues and an attitude of resentment or having that un-loving attitude of mind. Hence to throw off stress we again have to examine what we are doing in life that is bringing about stress, and then we need to sit down in a serious matter-of-fact way to CHANGE what needs to be changed to reduce stress. For some under large stress maybe professional help will be needed. So then we have to admit to ourselves we need professional help to move out of our stressful life. Well, these are some of the things we can do to put away an un- loving attitude of mind. IT IS WRITTEN GOD IS LOVE, AND HE WANTS YOU TO HAVE HIS LOVE IN YOU. AS YOU DRAW CLOSER TO HIM AND CHRIST JESUS, AS YOU ALLOW MORE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO FILL YOUR MIND, YOU CAN BE, YOU WILL BE, A LOVING PERSON. Keith Hunt September 2012 |
