Obadiah
EDOM IS TURKEY TODAY[Keith Hunt]
New Living Translation
1 This is the vision that the Sovereign Lord revealed to Obadiah concerning the land of Edom.
Edom’s Judgment Announced
We have heard a message from the Lord
that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say,
“Get ready, everyone!
Let’s assemble our armies and attack Edom!”
2 The Lord says to Edom,
“I will cut you down to size among the nations;
you will be greatly despised.
3 You have been deceived by your own pride
because you live in a rock fortress
and make your home high in the mountains.
‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’
you ask boastfully.
4 But even if you soar as high as eagles
and build your nest among the stars,
I will bring you crashing down,”
says the Lord.
5 “If thieves came at night and robbed you
(what a disaster awaits you!),
they would not take everything.
Those who harvest grapes
always leave a few for the poor.
But your enemies will wipe you out completely!
6 Every nook and cranny of Edom[a]
will be searched and looted.
Every treasure will be found and taken.
7 “All your allies will turn against you.
They will help to chase you from your land.
They will promise you peace
while plotting to deceive and destroy you.
Your trusted friends will set traps for you,
and you won’t even know about it.
8 At that time not a single wise person
will be left in the whole land of Edom,”
says the Lord.
“For on the mountains of Edom
I will destroy everyone who has understanding.
9 The mightiest warriors of Teman
will be terrified,
and everyone on the mountains of Edom
will be cut down in the slaughter.
Reasons for Edom’s Punishment
10 “Because of the violence you did
to your close relatives in Israel,[b]
you will be filled with shame
and destroyed forever.
11 When they were invaded,
you stood aloof, refusing to help them.
Foreign invaders carried off their wealth
and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem,
but you acted like one of Israel’s enemies.
12 “You should not have gloated
when they exiled your relatives to distant lands.
You should not have rejoiced
when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune.
You should not have spoken arrogantly
in that terrible time of trouble.
13 You should not have plundered the land of Israel
when they were suffering such calamity.
You should not have gloated over their destruction
when they were suffering such calamity.
You should not have seized their wealth
when they were suffering such calamity.
14 You should not have stood at the crossroads,
killing those who tried to escape.
You should not have captured the survivors
and handed them over in their terrible time of trouble.
Edom Destroyed, Israel Restored
15 “The day is near when I, the Lord,
will judge all godless nations!
As you have done to Israel,
so it will be done to you.
All your evil deeds
will fall back on your own heads.
16 Just as you swallowed up my people
on my holy mountain,
so you and the surrounding nations
will swallow the punishment I pour out on you.
Yes, all you nations will drink and stagger
and disappear from history.
17 “But Jerusalem[c] will become a refuge for those who escape;
it will be a holy place.
And the people of Israel[d] will come back
to reclaim their inheritance.
18 The people of Israel will be a raging fire,
and Edom a field of dry stubble.
The descendants of Joseph will be a flame
roaring across the field, devouring everything.
There will be no survivors in Edom.
I, the Lord, have spoken!
19 “Then my people living in the Negev
will occupy the mountains of Edom.
Those living in the foothills of Judah[e]
will possess the Philistine plains
and take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria.
And the people of Benjamin
will occupy the land of Gilead.
20 The exiles of Israel will return to their land
and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath.
The captives from Jerusalem exiled in the north[f]
will return home and resettle the towns of the Negev.
21 Those who have been rescued[g] will go up to[h] Mount Zion in Jerusalem
to rule over the mountains of Edom.
And the Lord himself will be king!”

Obadiah for Today and Tomorrow
The Prophecy for Edom/Turkey
I first refer you to the study on my Website under "Prophecy" called "The Migration of Nations." Then if you are interested in an in-depth study of "The Origin of Nations" you may obtain that 471 page book from Amazon.com You can also obtain "The Great German Nation - Origin and Destiny" from Amazon.com Both the above books are by Craig M. White of "The History Research Projects." History shows us that a good portion of Esau/Edom finally settled in the land called TURKEY today. They are predominately Islamic in religion, which is strongly in opposition to Christianity and Judaism. OBADIAH From the KJV "Personal Study Bible" Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1990,1995. Author and Date. Obadiah means "The LORD'S Servant," but beyond that nothing certain is known about him. Determining the exact date of his prophecy is also difficult because the historical events which are in view are not entirely clear. However, the interpretation relates the message to the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586 B.C. Thus the book would have been written some time after that event, possibly in light of emerging coalition threatening the country of Edom (see v.1). Background. The Edomites had acted treacherously against the inhabitants of Jerusalem during their darkest hour. They had laughed at Judah's sorrow, probably looted the hapless people, and helped the Babylonian soldiers find fleeing refugees. Thus the book is a message of doom against Edom. Edom was situated in a mountainous area to the south of Judah. Its secure stronghold created a sense of self-sufficiency and pride which the prophet condemns (v.3). Her secure position would be defenceless against the wrath of the Lord. Purpose. Many have questioned the validity of the book because of its apparently vengeful spirit. However, it shows the close identification between the Lord and His people. Whoever misuses God's people is the enemy of God (see Zech.2:8,9). The same is found elsewhere in Scripture including the condemnation pronounced upon Rome (represented as "Babylon") in Revelation 18:1-20. Furthermore, God had already visited His own people in judgment, and it is therefore consistent with His moral government that He not exempt others. Thus the message of Obadiah would be a word of comfort to those who suffered from Edomite cruelties. It reinforces the prophetic conviction that the Lord is the sovereign deity over all human history, not just the God of the Israelites. ............. From the New Living Translation Edom's Judgment Announced 1 We have heard a message from the LORD that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say, "Get ready, everyone! Let's assemble our armies and attack Edom!" 2 The LORD says, "I will cut you down to size among the nations, Edom; you will be small and despised. 3 You are proud because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. 'Who can ever reach us way up here?' you ask boastfully. Don't fool yourselves! 4 Though you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down. I, the LORD, have spoken! 5 "If thieves came at night and robbed you, they would not take everything. Those who harvest grapes always leave a few for the poor. But your enemies will wipe you out completely! 6 Every nook and cranny of Edom* (Heb. "Esau") will be searched and looted. Every treasure will be found and taken. 7 "All your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace, while plotting your destruction. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won't even know about it. 8 At that time not a single wise person will be left in the whole land of Edom!" says the LORD. "For on the mountains of Edom I will destroy everyone who has wisdom and understanding. 9 The mightiest warriors of Teman will be terrified, and everyone on the mountains of Edom will be cut down in the slaughter." THERE INDEED WAS A FIRST FULFILMENT OF THIS PROPHECY. Babylon took away most Edom people as that Empire swept away Judah. But like the people of Judah, the Edomites did not all die in captivity. They moved on over the decades and a great many of them finally settled in Asia Minor or the country we call TURKEY today. Reasons for Edom's Punishment 10 "And why? Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel.* (Heb."your brother Jacob") Now you will be destroyed completely and filled with shame forever. 11 For you deserted your relatives in Israel during their time of greatest need. You stood aloof, refusing to lift a finger to help when foreign invaders carried off their wealth and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem. You acted as though you were one of Israel's enemies. 12 You shouldn't have done this! You shouldn't have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You shouldn't have rejoiced because they were suffering such misfortune. You shouldn't have crowed over them as they suffered these disasters. 13 You shouldn't have plundered the land of Israel (KJV "the gate of my people) when they were suffering such calamity. You shouldn't have gloated over the destruction of your relatives, looting their homes and making yourselves rich at their expense. 14 You shouldn't have stood at the crossroads, killing those who tried to escape. You shouldn't have captured the survivors, handing them over to their enemies in that terrible time of trouble. Edom Destroyed, Israel Restored, Judgment on all Nations (KJV) 15 "The day is near when I, the LORD, will judge the godless nations! "FOR THE DAY OF THE LORD IS NEAR..." (KJV) "FOR NEAR IS THE DAY OF JEHOVAH...." (GREEN'S Hebrew/English Interlinear) HERE WE HAVE THE FINAL FULFILMENT OF THIS PROPHECY .... IT IS THE DAY OF THE LORD THAT IS NEAR WHEN EDOM/TURKEY AND ALL NATIONS WILL FACE GOD'S JUDGMENT!! "As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads. 16 Just as you swallowed up my people on my holy mountain, so you and the surrounding nations will swallow the punishment I pour out on you. Yes, you nations will drink and stagger and disappear from history, as though you had never even existed." IN THE COMPARISON BETWEEN ISRAEL AND JERUSALEM AND OTHER NATIONS AROUND ABOUT, THERE WILL BE NO COMPARISON! 17 "But Jerusalem* (Heb. "mount Zion") will become a refuge for those who escape; it will be a holy place. And the people of Israel* (Heb. "house of Jacob") will come back to reclaim their inheritance. 18 At that time Israel will be a raging fire, and Edom, a field of dry stubble. The fire will roar across the field, devouring everything and leaving no survivors in Edom. I, the LORD, have spoken!" AS WE HAVE SEEN IN OTHER PROPHECIES. JESUS WILL RETURN, ISRAEL AND JUDAH WILL BE DELIVERED FROM CAPTIVITY, FROM THE BEAST POWER OF EUROPE BABYLON. AS THEY MARCH BACK TO THE HOLY LAND THEY WILL PUNISH THE PEOPLE OF TURKEY FOR THEIR HARD HANDED CRUELTY TO JEWS THAT FLED NORTH TO ESCAPE THE BEAST POWER AND ITS DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION. 19 "Then my people living in the Negev will occupy the mountains of Edom. Those living in the foothills of Judah* (Heb."the Shephelah") will possess the Philistine plains and take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria. And the people of Benjamin will occupy the land of Gilead. 20 The exiles of Israel will return to their land and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath. The captives from Jerusalem exiled in the north* (Heb. "in Sepharad") will return to their homeland and resettle the villages of the Negev. 21 Deliverers will go up to* (Or "from") Mount Zion in Jerusalem to rule over the mountains of Edom. And the LORD himself will be king!" ............... NOTE: "The exiles of Israel will return and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath." Zarephath is close to Sidon. Take out your Bible Maps or Bible Encyclopedias. Now I want you to note what the Pictorial Bible Encyclopedia says regarding a comment about this area and that of the ministry of Jesus. "....In the NT, Sidon is often combined with Tyre, almost as a formula. ONE VISIT by Jesus to the region of Tyre and Sidon is recorded in the gospels (Mat.15:21; Mark 7:31), at which time he had the encounter with the Syro-Phoenician woman. This is the only recorded instance in the ministry of Jesus that he went OUTSIDE the boundaries of Palestine ..." Vol.5, p.426-428. THIS IS ONE CLEAR PROOF THE PROPHECY HERE IS FOR THE FUTURE!! WHEN THE JEWS RETURNED FROM BABYLON TO JUDEA AND JERUSALEM AFTER THE 70 YEAR CAPTIVITY IN BABYLON, THE JEWS NOR ANY ISRAELITE CAN NEVER BE SAID TO HAVE OCCUPIED THIS PART OF THE NORTH WEST COAST. IT WAS GENTILES WHO LIVED THERE. READ ABOUT JESUS AND THE WOMAN IN MATTHEW 15. JESUS SAID HE WAS NOT SENT BUT TO LOST ISRAEL AND IT WAS NOT FITTING TO GIVE THE MASTER'S MEAT TO THE "DOGS" - WHICH EVERYONE KNEW MEANT "GENTILES." THIS AREA OF THE COAST WAS NOT "OCCUPIED" BY ISRAELITES! IT WILL BE WHEN ISRAEL IS RETURNED TO THE HOLY LAND AT THE COMING OF JESUS THE MESSIAH. WHATEVER ELSE MAY BE SAID ABOUT ALL THE OTHER VERSES, THIS ONE AND THE PHRASE USED "DAY OF THE LORD" IN VERSE 15, IS PROOF ENOUGH THAT THIS PROPHECY IS YET TO HAVE A FINAL END TIME FULFILMENT! WHEN THE JEWS FLEE NORTH AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION, TO ESCAPE THE BEAST POWER, THE KING OF THE NORTH (in Daniel 11:40-45) THE ISLAMIC PEOPLE OF TURKEY WILL DEAL VERY HARSHLY WITH THEM, THEY WILL BE SHALL WE SAY, ON THE SIDE OF THE END TIME BABYLON BEAST. FOR THIS TREATMENT OF ISRAELITE JEWS GOD WILL DEAL OUT PUNISHMENT ON THE PEOPLE OF TURKEY BY ISRAELITES, AS THEY WILL BE A FIRE AND FLAME AND THE HOUSE OF ESAU AS STUBBLE. SAVIORS SHALL COME UP ON MOUNT ZION - DELIVERERS - THE SAINTS OF GOD - RESURRECTED AT THE COMING OF CHRIST - AND THE KINGDOM SHALL BE THE LORD'S! ................... |
