The ancient Egyptians are believed to have divided the daylight time into twelve decans. Then the same duodecimal system was applied to the night time, giving a day of 24 hours.
  • ………………..
  • WITH  THIS  IN  MIND  WE  CAN  ANSWER  A  FEW  SCRIPTURES  THAT  SEEM  TO  CONTRADICT  AND  GIVE  PUZZLEMENT ---- Keith Hunt
  • LEVITICUS 23:32—Was the feast observed on the ninth day or on the tenth day?
  • PROBLEM: According to this verse the fast associated with the Day of Atonement was to begin on the “ninth day of the month.” But earlier in Leviticus 16:29 they were to begin fasting on the “tenth day of the month.”
  • SOLUTION: This fast began on the ninth day and extended over to the tenth day (cf. Lev. 23:27). Hence, it was appropriate to speak of it as being either day.

THE  BIBLE  CAN  AND  DOES  AT  TIMES,  GIVE  THE  DAYS  STARTING  AT  SUNDOWN,  OR  SUNSET.  AND  OFTEN  THERE  IS  A  JUMP  FROM  ONE  TO  THE  OTHER,  WITH  NO  WARNING  OR  EXPLANATION. AND  I  DID  COVER  THIS  IN  A  STUDY  OR  TWO  CONCERNING  THE  PASSOVER  DEATH  OF  JESUS  AND  HIS  RESURRECTION  AND  APPEARANCE  TO  SOME  OF  HIS  DISCIPLES.

SO  IF  EGYPTIAN  [AND ADOPTED  BY  THE  ROMAN  EMPIRE]  TIME  OF  MIDNIGHT  FOR  A  NEW  DAY  IS  USED,  AS  APPOSED  TO  WHAT  SOME  MAY  SAY  IS  “JEWISH”  TIME—— SUNSET  FOR  A  NEW  DAY,  THEN  THE  DAY  OF  THE  FAST  FOR  THE  FEAST  OF  ATONEMENT,  COULD  BE  SAID  TO  BEGIN  EITHER  ON  THE  9TH  DAY  OR  THE  10TH  DAY. UNDER  EGYPTIAN  TIME  THE  FAST  BEGAN  ON  THE  9TH  DAY;  UNDER  “JEWISH”  TIME  THE  FAST  BEGAN  ON  THE  10TH  DAY.

IT  IS  LIKE  GOD  DELIBERATELY  THROWS  IN  A  CURVE  BALL,  WITH  NO  EXPLANATION  OR  FOR-WARNING.  HE  MAY  DO  SO  JUST  TO  KEEP  US  ON  OUR  TOES  AS  WE  SAY,  GETTING  US  TO  “THINK”  AND  TO  “DIG”  FOR  THE  ANSWER  TO  WHAT  SEEMS  LIKE  A  CONTRADICTION.

  • There are several other problems of a similar nature. For example, in like manner the feast was both seven days (Ex. 12:15) or six days (Deut. 16:8).

  • WELL  NOT  REALLY  THE  SAME  PROBLEM—— THE  TRUTH  IS  IN  EX. 12: 15—— 7  DAYS.  THE  VERSE  IN  DEUT. 16: 8  IS  TELLING  US  THAT  BEFORE  THE  7TH  DAY  OF  THIS  FEAST,  THERE  WAS  6  DAYS,  NO  LEAVENED  BREAD  EATEN.  BUT  WHAT  IS  BEING  EMPHASIZED  IN  DEUT. 16 IS  THE  7TH  DAY  OF  THAT  FEAST  IS  A  SABBATH  DAY,  NO  REGULAR  WORK  BEING  DONE.  IT  BEING  ALSO  A  DAY  OF  UN-LEAVENED  BREAD  IS  GIVEN  IN  EX. 12: 15.  NOTHING  CONTRADICTORY  HERE  ONLY  A  CERTAIN  EMPHASIS  IN  DEUT. 16,  ABOUT  THE  7TH  DAY  OF  THIS  FEAST.

  • God ended His work of creation on the seventh day (Gen. 2:2) and yet did it in six days (Ex. 20:11).

  • AGAIN  JUST  AN  EMPHASIS—— ALL  THAT  GOD  DID [GEN. 2:2]  WAS  IN  A  SPAN  OF  7  DAYS,  AS  THE  7TH  DAY  WAS  ALSO  PART  OF  WHAT  GOD  DID  IN  THE  WHOLE.
  • EX. 20: 11  GIVES  EMPHASIS  TO  THE  PHYSICAL  CREATION  GOD  DID  ON  THIS  PHYSICAL  EARTH.  6  DAYS  WAS  PHYSICAL  CREATION,  WHICH  ENDED  AT  THE  END  OF  6  DAYS,  BUT  THE  7TH  DAY  SABBATH  WAS  MADE  BUT  NOT  BY  PHYSICAL  WORK  BUT  BY  REST.  AND  THAT  7TH  DAY  SABBATH  IS  THE  DAY  WE  REMEMBER  AND  LOOK  BACK  TO  THE  6  DAYS  OF  PHYSICAL  CREATION  GOD  DID.  THE  7TH  DAY  SABBATH  WAS  MADE  [FOR  MAN  AS  JESUS  SAID  IN  THE  GOSPELS]  BUT  NOT  IN  A  PHYSICAL  CREATION  WAY.

  • Also, “after eight days” means the next Sunday (John 20:26; cf. 20:19).

  • THIS  IS  REALLY  THE  POINT  OF  COUNTING—— INCLUSIVE OR  EXCLUSIVE.  JESUS  APPEARED  FIRST  TO  HIS  DISCIPLES  ON  THE  1ST  DAY  OF  THE  WEEK — SUNDAY.  IF  WE  COUNT  INCLUSIVE—— SUNDAY [1]  MONDAY [2]  TUESDAY [3]  WEDNESDAY [4]  THURSDAY [5]  FRIDAY [6]  SATURDAY [7]  SUNDAY [8]—— SO  YES  AFTER  8  DAYS  OR  ON  THE  8TH  DAY  JESUS  APPEARED  TO  THEM  AGAIN.
