WEEKLY WISDON STUDY #5

WEEKLY  WISDOM

PROVERBS OF SOLOMON

CHAPTER 5

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding,

2 That you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge.

3 For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil;

4 But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell.

6 Lest you ponder her path of life— her ways are unstable; You do not know them.

7 Therefore hear me now, my children, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

8 Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house,

9 Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one;

10 Lest aliens be filled with your wealth, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner;

11 And you mourn at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

12 And say: "How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised correction!

13 I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!

14 I was on the verge of total ruin, in the midst of the assembly and congregation.

4:20—9:18 Wisdom ancffolly are described in terms of a good woman, who can be a constructive factor in a man's life (5:15-20; 8:1—9:6) or an adventuress who will destroy him (5:1-14; 6:20—7:27). The book ends (31:10-31) with the figure of the good woman, thus tying the whole picture together.

4:20-22 my words... my sayings: The commands of the Lord. They lead to life and fulfillment (see John 10:10). 4:23 For all its concerns with conduct, Proverbs is sensitive to the heart as the motive-spring of life. From the heart one loves or hates the Lord and others (see Gen. 6:5; Deut; 6:4,5).

4:24 Perverse lips utter cursing instead of blessing, disdain instead of praise to God. 4:25-27 The way of the righteous is pictured as a straight path. We stay on it by keeping our eyes on the goal, and by refusing to turn to any evil.

5:1-23 A comparison of wisdom (v. 1) to a good wife and folly to an adventuress.

5:1-14 An immoral woman (v. 3) promises much but delivers little. Evil is never as satisfying as it appears.

5:4 Wormwood, a shrub that has a bitter taste, is a symbol for sorrow and pain.

5:5-10 Associating with an immoral woman brings loss of honor (v. 9) and often loss of wealth (v. 10; see 6:26).

5:12,13 Obeying instruction from wise teachers will keep us from sexual folly.

5:14 In ... the assembly: He was about to make a public fool of himself.

15 Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well.

16 Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, streams of water in the streets?

17 Let them be only your own, and not for strangers with you.

18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth.

19 As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love.

YES  THE  FEMALE  BREASTS  ARE  PART  OF  SEXUALITY;  THE  PRUDENT  GODLY  WOMAN  KNOWS  THIS  AND  WILL  NEVER  EXPOSE  THEM  IN  PUBLIC.  A  MAN  IS  SEXUALLY  ATTRACTED  TO  FEMALE  BREASTS.  A  WOMAN  ENJOYS  HER  MAN’S  FOREPLAY  WITH  HER  BREASTS;  THEY  ARE  SEXUAL  FOR  THEM  BOTH.  GOD  HAS  DESIGNED  SEX  TO  HAVE  MUCH  FOREPLAY  BEFORE  THE  PENIS  ENTERS  THE  VAGINA.  A  MAN  SHOULD  LEARN  NOT  TO  HURRY  SEX…..LONG  FOREPLAY  IS  USUALLY  DESIRED  BY  THE  WOMAN;  IT  IS  WONDERFUL  FOR  BOTH  THE  MALE  AND  FEMALE.  GOD  DESIGNED  SEX  TO  BE  ONE  OF  THE  GREATEST  PHYSICAL  PLEASURES  BETWEEN  A  MAN  AND  WOMAN.  HIS  WORD  DOES  TEACH  SEX  IS  FOR  MARRIAGE  AND  IN  MARRIAGE;  ADULTERY  AND  FORNICATION [sex  before  marriage]  ARE  DECLARED  SINS  BY  THE  HOLY  BIBLE.

20 For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, and be embraced in the arms of a seductress?

21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his paths.

22 His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, and he is caught in the cords of his sin.

23 He shall die for lack of instruction, and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

5:15-23 The blessings of true love with one's wife (v. 18).

5:15 your own cistern: Your own wife.

5:19 A wife's love will fully satisfy you. Goodness is always more satisfying than it appears it will be.

5:21 "You . . .. are acquainted with all my ways" (Ps. 139:3).

5:22, 23 His own iniquities entrap: Sin is self-destructive. See 1:18, 19 and note.
