MANY ARE CONFUSED IN READING EXODUS 12. THE CONFUSION COMES IN BELIEVING THE PHARISEE JEWS, IN OBSERVING THE PASSOVER FROM THE AFTERNOON OF THE 14TH INTO THE NIGHT OF THE 15TH OF THE FIRST HEBREW MONTH.
THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND IF YOU JUST READ IT AS A CHILD WOULD.
THIS WE SHALL NOW DO.
WHEN YOU READ GENESIS 1 WE CLEARLY SEE GOD BEGINS DAYS AT THE “EVENING”—— THE EVENING AND THE MORN ING WERE THE FIRST DAY ETC.
WITH THAT SIMPLE TRUTH WE MOVE TO EXODUS 12.
WE SHALL JUST READ THE VERSES TO DO WITH THE PASSOVER.
EXODUS 12:
FROM THE AMPLIFIED BIBLE.
The Last Plague
Chapter 11
1 THEN THE Lord said to Moses, "I will bring yet one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will let you go. When he lets you go, he will most certainly drive you out of here completely.
2 Speak so that all of the people [of Israel] may hear, and tell every man 3 ask from his neighbor, and every woman to ask from her neighbor, armies of silver, and articles of gold. 3 The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, [both] in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and in the sight of the people. 4 Then Moses said, Thus says the Lord: 'At midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, 5 and all the firstborn in the land [the pride, hope, and joy] of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the hand-mill, and all the firstborn of cattle as well.
There shall be a great cry [of heart-re and sorrow] throughout the land Egypt, such as has never been been and such as shall never be again. But not even a dog will threaten any of the Israelites, whether man or animal, so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.'
The Passover Lamb
Chapter 12
THE LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 This month [Abib - March/April] shall be the beginning of months to you; it is to be the first month of the year to you.
3 Tell all the congregation of Israel, 'On the tenth [day] of this month they are to take a lamb or young goat for themselves, according to [the size of] the household of which he is the father, a lamb or young goat for each household.
4 'Now if the household is too small for a lamb [to be consumed], let him and his next door neighbor take one according to the number of people [in the households]; according to what each man can eat, you are to divide the lamb.
5 'Your lamb or young goat shall be [perfect] without blemish or bodily defect, a male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. [1 Pet 1:19, 20]
6 'You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it *at twilight.
[NOTE “UNTIL” - UNTIL YOU GET TO THE 14TH DAY; WHICH FROM GENESIS 1 IS THE EVENING—— SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND - Keith Hunt]
7 'Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel [above the door] of the houses in which they eat it. [Matt 26:28; John 1:29; Heb 9:14]
8 'They shall eat the meat that same night, [THE SAME NIGHT OF THE 14TH - SIMPLE - Keith Hunt] roasted in fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
9 'Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted in fire—both its head and its legs, along with its inner parts.
10 'You shall let none of the meat remain until the morning, and anything that remains left over until morning, you shall burn completely in the fire. [THE MORNING OF THE 14TH - SIMPLE - Keith Hunt]
11 ’Now you are to eat it in this manner: [be prepared for a journey] with your *loins girded [that is, with the outer garment tucked into the band], your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; you shall eat it quickly—it is the Lord's Passover.
[THEY WERE TO BE PACKED AND READY; JOURNEY CLOTHES ON; ALL CARTS FOR UTENSILS, MORE CLOTHES, POTS AND PANS, BLANKETS AND ETC. WERE TO BE PACKED AND READY. Do you remember the Ten Commandment movie of 1956? All they had was to be packed and ready, it was a massive, massive wagon train as Cecil De BeMills portrayed in his 1956 movie - Keith Hunt]
12 'For I [the Lord] will pass through the land of Egypt on this night, [THIS NIGHT IS STILL TALKING ABOUT THE 14TH - Keith Hunt] and I will strike down all the firstborn the land of Egypt, both man and animal; against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments [exhibiting their worthlessness]. I am the Lord.
13 ‘The blood shall be a sign for you [the doorposts of] the houses where you live; when I see the blood I shall pass over you, and no affliction shall happen to you to destroy you when I strike land of Egypt. [1 Cor 5:7; Heb 11:28]
14 'Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as an ordinance forever.’ [STILL CONCERNING THE PASSOVER AND THE 14TH - Keith Hunt]
AMPLIFIED BIBLE NOTES——
12:6 Lit between the two evenings, that is, between sunset and nightfall (likely 6:00-7:20 p.m.) each household was to slaughter its own lamb or goat. 12:11 A variation of a phrase often found in the Bible that is an urgent call to get ready for immediate action, or to prepare for a coming action or event. The phrase is related to the type of clothing worn in ancient times. To keep from impeding the wearer during any vigorous activity, e.g. battle, exercise, strenuous work, etc., the loose ends of garments (tunics, cloaks, mantles, etc.) had to be gathered up and tucked into the girdle. The girdle was a band about six inches wide that had fasteners in front. It was worn around the loins (the midsection of the body between the lower ribs and the hips) and was normally made of leather. The girdle (band) also served as a kind of pocket or pouch and was used to carry personal items such as a dagger, money or other necessary things. Gird up your mind or gird up your heart are examples of variants of this phrase and call for mental or spiritual preparation for a coming challenge. 12:15 This is the first time leaven is mentioned in the Bible. The Hebrew word [seor) refers specifically to the leavening agent (as opposed to dough containing it), which today is thought of as yeast, a type of fungus. In Jewish thinking, leaven was symbolic of impurity and corruption. As leaven spreads through dough, sin spreads through a population. Jesus used it as a symbol for the corrupt and hypocritical teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees (see especially Luke 12:1; cf Matt 16:11; Mark 8:15), but He also used leaven's ability to permeate a mass of dough many times its own size as an illustration of the spread of the kingdom of heaven (Matt 13:33; Luke 13:21).
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, Go take a lamb for yourselves according to [the size of] your families and slaughter the Passover lamb,
22 You shall take a bunch of *hysop, [this evidently was a bristly plant which was useful as a kind of brush - Amplified Bible note] dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and touch some of the blood to the lintel [above the doorway] and to the two doorposts; and none of you all go outside the door of his house till morning.
[MORNING IS JUST THAT MORNING—- THE THEOLOGICAL WORDBOOK OF THE OLD TESTAMENT SAYS——
boqer. Morning, dawn.)
Linked with the root baqar, boqer (c. 200 tirrtes)
denotes the breaking through of the daylight and
thus dawn or more usually morning. This noun is
peculiar to Hebrew though the assumed root is'
not.
Frequent in narrative portions of the OT, boqer denotes a time marker as in the expression, "Joshua rose early in the morning" (Josh 3:1). boqer, when combined with evening ('ereb) may refer either to a full day (Gen 1:5), or in phrases "from evening to morning" designate night time (Lev 24:3), or "from morning to evening" (daytime; Ex 18:13). Occasionally boqer refers to "the morrow."
In poetry, boqer is more often mentioned than evening ('ereb). The voice of the worshiper will be heard in the morning, in praise (Ps 59:16 [H 17]) or in petition (Ps 88:13 [H 14]). The righteous are attentive to God in the morning through prayer and offerings (Ps 5:3 [H 4]); by contrast the wicked are also active but with evil schemes (Mic2:l; cf. Isa 5:11).
boqer may denote "early" or "promptly" as in "God will help her right early" (lit. "at the turning of morning," Ps 46:5 [H 6]; cf. Ps 90:14; 101:8), etc. but the case can not be proved. On the other hand in some of these passages boqer may have a latent meaning, "the suitable time of salvation."
……
[WE SEE THAT IN 99 TIMES OUT OF A HUNDRED OR 999 TIMES OUT OF A THOUSAND BOQER MEANS DAYBREAK, FROM NIGHT TO THE RISING OF THE SUN OVER THE HORIZON. AGAIN JUST NICE AND SIMPLE.
WHY WERE THE ISRAELITES TO WAIT IN THEIR HOMES TILL MORING, TILL SUNRISE? THAT ALSO IS LOGICALLY SIMPLE. BY READING THE CONTEXT YOU WILL FIND THERE WAS A HUGE POPULATION IN ISRAEL, AND OTHER PEOPLES CAME WITH THEM, AND THEY ALL HAD MUCH CATTLE, HERDS, SHEEP, GOATS, CHICKENS, DUCKS—— JUST AS CECIL DE BEMILS PORTRAYED IT IN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS MOVIE OF 1956. SOME HAVE SAID THERE COULD HAVE BEEN 2 MILLION PERSONS. WE SHALL PUT IT ON THE MALLER SIDE. CALGARY, ALBERTA IS 1. 3 MILLION PERSONS. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A SPORTS STADIUM HOLDING 100,000 PERSONS? I HAVE! IT IS MASSIVE, HUGE, KINDA UNREAL TO SEE THAT MANY TOGETHER. NOW TRY TO IMAGINE 1.3 MILLION PERSONS, THEN ADD CARTS AND ALL KINDS OF CATTLE AND LIVESTOCK. BLOWS THE MIND. IF AS SOME TEACH, ALL THIS WAS ON THE MOVE SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT—— OF THE 14TH— IT IS PREPOSTEROUS!
YOU WOULD HAVE TO WAKE UP BABIES AND CHILDREN FAST ASLEEP. OLD PEOPLE JUST NOT BEING ABLE TO STAY AWAKE, THE SPIRIT WILLING BUT THE FLESH IS WEAK. THEN ON TOP OF ALL THAT, YOU HAVE TO ROUND UP YOUR HERDS OF ALL KINDS OF ANIMALS. YOU ARE IN THE DARK, TRYING TO DO THIS AND GETTING THEM ALL ON THE MOVE. SHEEP— WHAT IF SOME GOT SEPARATED? YOU HEAR THIS CRY FROM THEM, AS THEY SEPARATE FROM THEIR MOTHERS OR WHATEVER. TRYING TO MOVE ALL THIS IN THE NIGHT AND MARCH IN SOME WAY ORGANIZED TO RAMASESE [VERSE 37], IS I SAY A SILLY AND DUMB THEOLOGY. AND FURTHER MORE THEY DID NOT YET GET THE OFFICIAL “ON YOUR WAY, GET OUT OF HERE” FROM PHARAOH - Keith Hunt]
23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel [above the entry way] and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow *the destroyer to come into your houses to slay you.
AMPLIFIED BIBLE NOTE—
[12:23 Another translation is “destruction,” which would make Yahweh (God) Himself, and not an "Angel of the Lord," the One to either "passes over" (Ex 12:13) or "destroys."
24 You shall observe this event [concerning Passover] as an ordinance for you and for your children forever.
25 When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall keep and observe this service.
26 When your children say to you, 'What does this service mean to you?'
27 You shall say, 'It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians, but spared our houses.' And the people bowed [their heads] low and worshiped [God].
28 Then the Israelites went and did [as they had been told]: just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
29 Now it happened at midnight that the Lord struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the cattle.
[STILL THE 14TH DAY WE ARE IN— SIMPLE - Keith Hunt]
30 Pharaoh got up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry [of heartache and sorrow] in Egypt, for there was no house where there was not someone dead.
[STILL IN THE 14TH DAY AT NIGHT - Keith Hunt]
31 Then he called for Moses and Aaron at night [THE NIGHT OF THE 14TH - Keith Hunt] and said, "Get up, get out from among my people, both you and the Israelites; and go, serve the Lord, as you said.
32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and [ask your God to] bless me also."
[PHARAOH CALLS FOR MOSES AND AARON IN THAT NIGHT. NOW YOU HAVE TO BE OUT IN LEFT FIELD IF YOU THINK PHARAOH LIVED AMONG THE ISRAELITES. OF COURSE HE WOULD NOT LIVE AMONG THE ISRAELITES; SO MOSES AND AARON HAD TO TRAVEL [MAYBE BY HORSE OR HORSE AND WAGON], TO WHERE PHARAOH LIVED, AND HEAR THOSE WORDS FROM HIS LIPS—— YOU ARE FREE, GET OUT OF MY LAND AND SERVE YOUR GOD! IT TOOK TIME FOR MOSES AND AARON TO TRAVEL TO PHARAOH AND BACK TO THE ISRAELITES. AMONG ALL THE CHAOS OF THE EGYPTIANS THAT NIGHT OF THE 14TH….. BY THE TIME MOSES AND AARON BACK BACK, IT WAS INDEED TIME TO SEND OUT MEN TO HELP THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL, MARCH IN SOME ORDER TO RAMESES. IT WOULD PROBABLY TAKE ALL THE DAYLIGHT PART OF THE 14TH FOR ALL ISRAELITES TO GET TO RAMESES.
NOW ISRAEL WAS FREE, DELIVERED FROM EGYPTIAN SLAVERY, THE NIGHT OF THE 14TH, WHEN PHARAOH GAVE THE ORDER FOR THEM TO GO, TO LEAVE. IT WOULD TAKE SOME DAYS TO ACTUALLY GET OUT OF THE EGYPTIAN LAND, SO BEING FREE BY NIGHT, WAS THE NIGHT OF THE 14TH. THEY WERE FREE FROM EGYPTIAN POWER AND SLAVERY. THE EGYPTIANS HAD NO MORE POWER OVER THEM THAT NIGHT OF THE 14TH.
THEY WOULD TRAVEL TO RAMASESE FIRST AS VERSE 37 SAYS. THEN LEAVE RAMASESE ON THE 15TH AS NUMBERS 33: 3 TELLS US—— THE DAY AFTER THE PASSOVER OF THE 14TH.
ALL MAKES LOGICAL SENSE. THE DAYLIGHT PART OF THE 14TH TO REACH RAMASESE. A NIGHT’S REST. THEN DURING THE DAYLIGHT OF THE 15TH THEY TRAVEL TO SUCCOTH— NOT A TOWN, AS SUCCOTH MEANS BOOTH. THEY LEFT RAMASESE AND WENT A DISTANCE AND THEN PITCHED THEIR TENTS - SUCCOTHED - FOR THE NIGHT, GOING INTO THE 16TH OF THE MONTH.
ALL EVERY SIMPLE WHEN YOU HAVE NO AX TO GRIND - Keith Hunt]
Exodus of Israel
33 The Egyptians [anxiously] urged the people [to leave], to send them out of the land quickly, for they said, "We will all be dead."
34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.
35 Now the Israelites had acted in accordance with the word of Moses; and they had asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing.
36 The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they asked. And so they plundered the Egyptians [of those things].
37 Now the Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, [Numbers 33:3] about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides [the women and] the children.
38 A mixed multitude [of non-Israelites from foreign nations] also went with them, along with both flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock. [Num 11:4; Deut 29:11]
[COULD HAVE BEEN WELL OVER 2 MILLION PERSONS, BUT EVEN A MILLION IS HUGE - Keith Hunt]
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought from Egypt; it was not leavened, since they were driven [quickly] from Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared any food for themselves.
40 Now the period of time the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. [Gen 15:13,14]
41 At the end of the four hundred and thirty years, to that very day, all the hosts of the Lord [gathered into tribal armies] left the land of Egypt.
Ordinance of the Passover
42 It is a night of watching to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out of the land of Egypt; this [same] night is for the Lord, to be observed and celebrated by all the Israelites throughout their generations.
[IT IS THE NIGHT OF THE 14TH THAT IS THE NIGHT TO BE OBSERVED - Keith Hunt]
43 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: no *foreigner is to eat it;
44 “but every man's slave who is bought with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat it.
45 “No stranger (temporary resident, foreigner) or hired servant shall eat it.
46 “It is to be eaten inside one house; you shall not take any of the meat outside the house, nor shall you break any of its bones. [John 19: 33, 36]
47 “The entire congregation of Israel shall keep and celebrate it.
48 “If a stranger living temporarily among you wishes to celebrate the Passover to the Lord, all his males must be circumcised, and then he may participate and celebrate it like one that is born in the land. But no un-circumcised person may eat it.
49 “The same law shall apply to the native-born and to the stranger who lives temporarily among you.”
50Then all the Israelites did so; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.
* 12:43 i.e. a gentile who had not become a proselyte to Judaism; but see v 48 for an exception.
………………………………….
THERE IS THE SIMPLE EASY TO READ UNDERSTANDING OF THE 14TH PASSOVER DAY, AND NIGHT TO BE OBSERVED—— NIGHT OF THE 14TH.
IN CHURCH HISTORY THERE WAS THE MASSIVE DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE ROMAN CHURCH THAT ADOPTED EASTER, AND THE CHURCHES OF ASIA MINOR, WHERE PAUL AND JOHN DID A MIGHTY WORK FOR THE LORD. YOU CAN FIND POLYCARP AND POLYCRATES IN THE 2ND CENTURY A.D. TRAVELLING TO ROME TO DEBATE THE ISSUE OF CELEBRATING THE LORD’S DEATH, AND TAKING OF BREAD AND WINE [FRUIT OF THE VINE]. IT IS KNOWN AS THE Quartodeciman CONTROVERSY. THE 14TH CONTROVERSY. IT WENT ON FOR MANY HUNDREDS OF YEARS. IT WAS ALSO A CONTROVERSY IN BRITAIN IN 664 A.D. WITH THE CELTIC/CULDEE BRITISH CHURCH AND THE CHURCH OF ROME.
WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE SIMPLE READING OF EXODUS 12, IT ALL THEN HARMONIZES EXACTLY WITH THE GOSPELS AND THE OBSERVING OF THE PASSOVER WITH JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES.
LET’S SEE IT ALL.
MATTHEW 26
V. 1 “AND IT CAME TO PASS WHEN JESUS HAD FINISHED ALL THESE SAYINGS, HE SAID UNTO HIS DISCIPLES — YOU KNOW THAT AFTER TWO DAYS IS THE FEAST OF THE PASSOVER….”
NOTHING HERE ABOUT JESUS SAYING HE WOULD HAVE A DIFFERENT MEETING WITH HIS DISCIPLES— SOME “EARLY PASSOVER.”
V. 17 “…THE DISCIPLES CAME TO JESUS SAYING UNTO HIM, WHERE WILL YOU THAT WE PREPARE FOR YOU TO EAT THE PASSOVER.”
NOTHING HERE ABOUT SOME EARLY PASSOVER MEAL THEY KNEW JESUS WANTED. THEY KNEW THE PASSOVER JESUS ALWAYS OBSERVED, AND GETTING CLOSE, THEY AUTOMATICALLY SAID TO HIM, WHERE SHALL IT BE WE OBSERVE THE PASSOVER WITH YOU.
LUKE 22: 1-15 “NOW THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD DREW NIGH……AND HE SENT PETER AND JOHN, SAYING, GO AND PREPARE US THE PASSOVER THAT WE MAY EAT….AND THEY WENT AND FOUND AS HE HAD SAID UNTO THEM. AND THEY MADE READY THE PASSOVER. AND WHEN THE HOUR WAS COME, HE SAT DOWN AND THE TWELVE WITH HIM. AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WITH DESIRE I HAVE DESIRED TO EAT THIS PASSOVER WITH YOU BEFORE I SUFFER.”
IT WAS THE PASSOVER THEY WERE EATING; NOT SOME EARLY MEETING, OR SOMETHING JESUS CALLED FOR, AS THEY JUST ASKED HIM WHERE WAS THE PLACE TO EAT THE PASSOVER. NOTHING HERE LIKE, “WELL LORD WE KNOW YOU HAVE SAID YOU WANTED TO HAVE A MEETING WITH US, SO WHERE SHALL WE GO TO RENT THE ROOM TO MEET IN AND HAVE A MEAL AT THE SAME TIME.”
MARK 14: 1-17 “….WHEN THEY KILLED THE PASSOVER, HIS DISCIPLES SAID UNTO HIM, WHERE WILL YOU THAT WE SHOULD GO AND PREPARE THAT YOU SHOULD EAT THE PASSOVER……..THERE I SHALL EAT THE PASSOVER….AND THEY MADE READY THE PASSOVER. AND IN THE EVENING HE COMES WITH THE TWELVE.”
ONCE MORE IT IS THE PASSOVER NOT SOME EARLY MEAL, OR SPECIAL EVENING MEAL TO GIVE THEM SOME NEWS ABOUT HIMSELF.
PAUL SAYS IT WAS THE SAME NIGHT THAT JESUS WAS BETRAYED, WHEN HE INTRODUCED THE BREAD AND WINE TO BE A MEMORIAL OF HIS DEATH—— 1 COR. 11: 23-26.
JESUS OBSERVED THE PASSOVER—— HIS DISCIPLES KNEW IT, AS THEY HAD BEEN WITH HIM FOR 3 AND 1/2 YEARS. IT WAS JUST AUTOMATIC TO ASK HIM, “WHERE SHALL WE PREPARE THE PASSOVER FOR YOU AND US.”
IT IS SIMPLE!
WHEN YOU READ EXODUS 12 CORRECTLY, SIMPLY, AND SEE THE GOSPEL ACCOUNTS AS I’VE JUST GIVEN YOU—— IT IS CLEAR!
AS A KID GROWING UP IN A CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL, FROM AGE 7, AND READING GENESIS AND EXODUS, AND THE GOSPEL ACCOUNTS LATER IN MY YOUNG LIFE, IT WAS EASY TO PUT THEM TOGETHER AS I’VE JUST DONE FOR YOU.
THE PASSOVER LAMB WAS SLAIN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 14TH. JESUS SO OBSERVED IT WITH HIS DISCIPLES.
NOW, YES, I KNOW THERE ARE MANY “PROBLEM” VERSES TO ANSWER, AND I HAVE ANSWERED THEM ALL IN OTHER STUDIES.
BUT WITH THE FOUNDATION CLEARLY PUT DOWN, ALL THE OTHER PROBLEM VERSES CAN BE ANSWERED.
THE PHARISEE JEWS IN JESUS’ TIME WERE INCORRECT IN THEIR OBSERVANCE OF THE PASSOVER. THE PHARISEE JEWS OF TODAY ARE ALSO VERY INCORRECT IN OBSERVING THE PASSOVER.
