CHAPTER 2

The Value of Wisdom

My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, 

2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; 

3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, 

4 if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures;

2:1-9 To one who earnestly seeks the truth (vv. 1-5) God holds out the promise of a fruitful search (vv. 5-9).

2:3 Discernment is a mark of wisdom. The simple lack this virtue of insight into what is right.

2:4, 5- Diligence is needed to receive the gift of wisdom (see Deut. 4:29, 30 and note). Wisdom is far more valuable than silver (see 3:14; Job 28:12,15).

THE  WORD  “SIMPLE”  CAN  BE  USED  IN  DIFFERENT  WAYS,  SO  THE  CONTEXT  MUST  BE  TAKEN  INTO  ACCOUNT.  PAUL  WROTE,  “THE  SIMPLICITY  THAT  IS  IN  CHRIST  JESUS.”  USED  AS  REFERRING  TO  THE  GOSPEL  AND  JESUS  IN  HIS  MINISTRY  DID  NOT  MAKE  IT  COMPLICATED.  THE  FOUR  GOSPELS  ARE  RELATIVELY  EASY  TO  UNDERSTAND.  HERE  IT  IS  USED  AS  BEING  “SIMPLE  MINDED”  -  SILLY,  STUPID,  A  MIND  THAT  DOES  NOT  HAVE  COMMON  SENSE  EVEN.  NOTICE  WISDOM  IS  PERSONIFIED,  MADE  INTO  A  WOMAN  WHO  CRIES  OUT  FOR  PEOPLE  TO  TAKE  WHAT  SHE  CAN  OFFER.  THE  WISDOM  THAT  COMES  FROM  GOD  IS  HERE  PERSONIFIED.  SOMETIMES  IN  THIS  LIFE,  AS  DAVID  SAID  IN  THE  PSALMS,  THE  FOOLISH  AND  SIMPLE  MINDED  WHO  DO  NOT  TAKE  WHAT  GOD  CAN  OFFER,  ARE  NOT  ALWAYS  PUNISHED  WITH  DISASTERS  IN  THIS  LIFE  -  SOMETIMES  THEY  PROSPER  IN  THIS  PHYSICAL  WORLD.  BUT  EVENTUALLY  IF  THEY  NEVER  TURN  TO  THE  WAYS  OF  THE  LORD,  THEY  WILL  FACE  DESTRUCTION  IN  THE  SECOND  DEATH [REVELATION 20].  THEN  IT  TROUBLES  AND  RIUN  AND  DESTRUCTION  CAN  COME  ON  THEM  IN  THIS  LIFE.  THIS  CAN  BE  APPLIED  TO  INDIVIDUALS  AND/OR  NATIONS.  THE  LORD  WILL  USUALLY  SEND  A  PERSON  OR  PEOPLE  TO  WARN  NATIONS  OF  THEIR  EVIL  AND  UNWISE  WAYS;  AND  IF  THEY  DO  NOT  LISTEN  AND  SEEK  TO  HAVE  GOD’S  WISDOM  IN  THEIR  WAYS,  HE  WILL  LAUGH  AT  THEM  WHEN  THEY  FINALLY  REAP  WHAT  THEY  HAVE  SOWN.  THEN  FOR  WHATEVER  TIME  SPAN,  GOD  WILL  TURN  HIS  BACK  ON  THEM;  THEY  WILL  SEEK  HIM  BUT  WILL  NOT  FIND  HIM.  

WE  SEE  HERE,  SHALL  WE  SAY,  THE  HUMANIST  OF  GOD.  HE  CAN  AND  WILL  AT  TIMES  LAUGH  AT  PEOPLE  AND  NATIONS  WHEN  THEY  REAP  WHAT  THEY  HAVE  SOWN,  BY  NOT  LISTENING  TO  THE  WAYS  OF  THE  LORD  AS  CRIED  OUT  BY  RIGHTEOUS  WISDOM.  AND  GOD  CAN  BE  LIKE  A  PHYSICAL  FATHER  WHO  AFTER  TRYING  TO  GUIDE  A  SON  OR  DAUGHTER  IN  THE  RIGHT  PATH,  AND  THEY  REFUSE,  THE  FATHER  MAY  THROW  HIS  HANDS  UP  AND  SAY,  “OKAY  I  TRIED  TO  HELP  YOU,  SO  NOW  I  WILL  WALK  AWAY  AND  LET  THE  TROUBLES  COME  UPON  YOU.  I  HAVE  TO  GIVE  YOU  SPACE  AND  TIME  AND  NOT  HELP  EVEN  WHEN  YOU  CRY  OUT  TO  ME.  YOU  NOW  HAVE  TO  LEARN  THE  HARD  WAY  BY  THE  CHOICES  YOU  HAVE  MADE.”

THE  LORD  FINISHES  CHAPTER  ONE  WITH  THE  ADMONITION  TO  LISTEN  TO  HIM,  SO  YOU  CAN  DWELL  SAFELY  AND  BE  SECURE  IN  NOT  FEARING  EVIL.  THIS  DOES  NOT  MEAN  THERE  WILL  BE  NO  TRIALS,  AND  TROUBLES  TO  FACE  IN  LIFE.  MOST  OF  US  HAVE  UPS  AND  DOWNS  DURING  A  FULL  LIFE.  BUT  GENERALLY [THERE  IS  THAT  WORD  AGAIN]  MOST  CHRISTIANS  WILL  NOT  FEAR  THAT  EVIL  IS  AROUND  THE  CORNER,  THEY  WILL  FOR  THE  MOST  PART  HAVE  A  GOOD  NIGHTS  SLEEP.  FOR  THOSE  WHO  DO  GET  PERSECUTION  AND  MAY  HAVE  TO  GIVE  UP  THEIR  LIFE  FOR  GOD  AND  CHRIST,  THEY  UNDERSTAND  THAT  THIS  CAN  BE  SO,  AND  THEY  COUNT  IT  A  BLESSING  TO  JOIN  THE  SAINTS  OF  HEBREWS  11.

MANY  OF  THE  PROVERBS  AND  WORDS  IN  THESE  CHAPTERS  MUST  BE  TAKEN  IN  THE  SETTING  OF  THE  ENTIRE  BIBLE.

5 Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;

8 He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints.

9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path:

10 When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 

11 Discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you,

12 To deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, 

13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; 

14 Who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked;

15 Whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths;

16 To deliver you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words,

17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God. 

18 For her house leads down to death, and her paths to the dead; 

19 None who go to her return, nor do they regain the paths of life— 

20 So you may walk in the way of goodness, and keep to the paths of righteousness. 

21 For the upright will dwell in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; 

22 But the wicked will be cut off, from the earth, and the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.

2:6-9 The Lord is the source of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. However, His resources are for His saints, those who seek to please Him by living uprightly (see Ps. 18:20-24 and note).

2:10-22 When wisdom enters: All of the benefits described in these verses come from wisdom's presence in the hearer's life.

2:16-19 As wisdom is symbolized by a woman (1:20, 21), so is folly. But these are not merely symbols. A woman who embodies wisdom can make a man (31:10-31), while one who embodies folly will destroy him (7:6-23).

2:17 companion of her youth: Her husband (see 5:18). The covenant probably refers to the marital promises made before God in a marriage ceremony (see Mai. 2:13-16 and note).

2:21,22 Obedience to God was always the determining factor as to whether Israel would dwell in the land God had given them, or be cut off (see note on Deut. 28:15-68).

Ultimately those who follow God will inherit the earth with His promised blessings (see Matt. 5:5 and note).

WHEN YOU STUDY ALL VERSES ON THE SUBJECT OF DEATH, YOU KNOW THE  TRUTH THAT WE DO NOT GO TO HEAVEN OR HELL WHEN WE DIE.

DEATH IS A SLEEP;  WE,  THE  TRUE  CHILDREN  OF  GOD, WILL BE  RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE. THIS WILL BE AT THE RETURN OF JESUS TO EARTH. WE SHALL MEET HIM IN THE AIR,  THE CLOUDS [1 THES. 4: 13-18].  IN THAT DAY WE SHALL DESCEND WITH HIM TO THE MOUNT OF OLIVES [ZECH. 14]. THE KINGDOM OF GOD WILL BE SET UP ON EARTH WITH JERUSALEM AS THE HEADQUARTERS.

THE KINGDOM WILL BE RULED BY CHRIST JESUS GOD, FOR 1,000 YEARS [REV. 20].

AT THE END OF THAT AGE AND THE WHITE THRONE AGE, JESUS WILL HAND THE KINGDOM OVER TO GOD THE FATHER [1 COR. 15].

GOD THE FATHER WILL DESCEND WITH THE HOLY HEAVENLY CITY; THERE WILL BE A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH [REV. 21].

THE EARTH WILL BE THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE.

THE CHILDREN OF GOD WILL HAVE INHERITED THE EARTH!

HEAVEN IS COMING TO EARTH; WE DO NOT GO TO HEAVEN; BUT HEAVEN IS COMING TO US ON THIS EARTH.
