PROVERBS…. of Wisdom
CHAPTER 3
Trust God for Direction
My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands;
2 For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart,
4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;

From The New KJV Study Bible
3:1-12 My son: The form of address regularly used in Proverbs to designate instructions for the young.
3:1, 2 The connection between keeping God's commands and enjoying long life is supported by the fifth commandment (see Ex. 20:12).
3:3 Tablet of your heart: Make God's ways internal, not merely external (see Deut. 6:4-9; Ezek. 36:26, 27);
3:5, 6 Verses, worthy of being memorized, which sum up the biblical approach to life. Wisdom is not the result of mere human insight, but of learning God's unchanging ways.
……
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.
8 It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones.
9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.
13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding;
14 For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.
19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens;
20 By His knowledge the depths were broken up, and clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, let them not depart from your eyes— Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
22 So they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck.
23 Then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26 For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.
27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.
28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come back, and tomorrow I will give it," When you have it with you.
29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor, for he dwells by you for safety's sake.
30 Do not strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm.
……
Notes from the New KJV Study Bible
NN3:7 Fear the Lord ... depart from evil: See Job 1.1 and note.
3:9 Honoring the Lord meant giving Him the portion of material goods that He required (Deut. 26:1, 2, 9-13).
Firstfruits were the first items harvested, and often the best.
3:11,12 If God did not love us, He would not bother to correct us. See Heb. 12:5-11 and note.
3:13 Happy also means blessed. In Proverbs such a person is satisfied and content; v. 17 explains why.
3:16 Wisdom, gives long life because in Proverbs wisdom means living as God commands us (see vv. 1,2).
3:19, 20 Wisdom was the "master craftsman" (see 8:30) through whom God did His creative work (see 8:22-31 and notes).
3:24-26 Serving God saves us from many fears.
3:27-30 The wise person promotes good relations.
……
VARIOUS POINTS OF GENERALLY LIVING A GOOD AND PLEASING LIFE TO GOD AND TO MANKIND.
SOME OF THIS MUST BE PUT IN THE ORDER OF “GENERAL STATEMENTS.”
CERTAINLY WISDOM CAN KEEP YOU AWAY FROM PHYSICAL HARM AND DANGER, AND SO GRANT YOU MORE DAYS OF LIFE, BUT THIS DOES NOT TEACH HAVING GOD’S WISDOM WILL GUARANTEE YOU WILL LIVE TO BE 90 OR 100. OVERALL SERVING THE LORD WILL GIVE YOU A WHOLESOME, PLEASANT, AND SAFE LIFE.
BEING A GOOD STEWARD OF YOUR PHYSICAL THINGS WILL BE PLEASING TO GOD, AND HE WILL NOT FORGET TO REWARD YOU ACCORDINGLY AS YOU USE THOSE PHYSICAL THINGS TOWARD GOD AND YOUR FELLOW HUMAN. IF YOU HIRE SOMEONE TO DO A DAYS WORK, OR A WEEKS WORK, PAY THEM RIGHT AWAY AFTER THE WORK IS FINISHED AND INSPECTED. DO NOT BE A PERSON WHO LIKES TO GET ONE OVER ON HIS NEIGHBOUR. YOU ARE ONLY TO STIVE WITH OTHERS IF YOU HAVE A GENUINE CAUSE, AND IMPORTANT ENOUGH; OFTEN WE SHOULD JUST LET IT GO BY. IN OTHER WORDS DON’T NIT-PICK WITH OTHERS. A LOT OF THINGS IN LIFE ARE NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT. YET A CHRISTIAN SHOULD NOT BE A MAT FOR PEOPLE TO WALK ALL OVER…… WISDOM IS NEEDED TO DECIDE WHEN A THING IS LARGE ENOUGH TO HAVE CAUSE TO STRIVE OVER.
WISDOM FROM GOD IS IMPORTANT IN HAVING A GENERALLY CALM, PEACEFUL, SMOOTH, LIFE IN ALL YOUR UNDERTAKINGS AND WORKINGS WITH OTHER PEOPLE. LACKING WISDOM CAN AND DOES GET US INTO A WRONG MIND-SET, AND MANY TROUBLES OF THE FLESH AS WE WALK OUR PHYSICAL LIFE. IT SEEMS TO ME TODAY EVEN “COMMON LOGIC” AS WE CALL IT, IS LACKING IN SO MANY.
WISDOM FROM GOD ALSO MEANS WE SEEK OUT OTHERS WHO HAVE WALKED THE SAME PATH WE ARE FIGURING TO TAKE, AND FIND OUT WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY NOW THAT THEY CAN LOOK BACK ON IT ALL.

31 Do not envy the oppressor, and choose none of his ways;
32 For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright.
33 The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the just.
34 Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise shall inherit glory, but shame shall be the legacy of fools.
……
Notes from the New KJV Study Bible
3:31-33 The oppressor has God's curse upon him. His material success becomes ultimate moral and religious failure.
……
IT MAY NOT ALL HAPPEN IN THIS LIFE TIME, GENERAL STATEMENTS AGAIN. BUT THE END RESULT WILL BE GOOD FOR THE GODLY AND BAD FOR THE UNGODLY. IN THIS LIFETIME SOME OF THE UNGODLY PROSPER AND SEEM TO HAVE LITTLE TROUBLES; SOMETIMES IN THIS LIFE THE GODLY DO NOT ALL HAVE IT AS A BED OF ROSES…… SO THE GODLY HAVE TO LOOK AT THE END OF IT, AT THE INHERITANCE.
