Every year, 100 million monarch butterflies set off on an incredible journey across North America. These beautiful creatures fly 2,000 miles to reach their remote destination: a tiny area high in the mountains of Mexico. Yet scientists are still puzzling over how the butterflies achieve this tremendous feat of endurance - and how, year after year, the monarchs navigate with such hair-breath precision. NOVA flies along with the monarchs, visiting the spectacular locations they call home, and meeting the dangers they encounter along the way. Shot in stunning detail, The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies reveals the monarch as a scientific marvel locked in an inspiring struggle for survival.

This movie shows you the 4 stage movement of the monarch butterfly that defies evolution; from leaving Mexico, to the 3 stops and breading back to Canada; the 4th generation is born. It has never been to Mexico, yet at a certain time they will start their journey back to Mexico. The 4th generation is the ONLY generation to live to 8 or 9 months so they can cross the 2,000 miles back to Mexico, and start the cycle all over again.

Why do this? Why bother evolving to do this? It's the only butterfly that does such a thing. Why on earth bother to evolve such a routine?

The truth of the matter is they did not evolve to do this mind-bending feat of endurance; a tiny creature with delicate wings, traveling 2,000 miles back to the same exact place in Mexico, that they have never seen before.
