I HEARD A VERY INTERESTING INTERVIEW THIS EVENING WHILE DRIVING HOME.
IT WAS ON THE POPULAR CBC RADIO PROGRAM "AS IT HAPPENS" (WHICH HAS A WIDE FOLLOWING ALL OVER NORTH AMERICA NOT JUST IN CANADA)
THE HOST LADY WAS INTERVIEWING THE MAN (UNUSUAL NAME SO DID NOT REMEMBER IT) WHO HAS WRITTEN THE "NOVEL" BOOK "THE WATCH" - I SAY IT IS A NOVEL, BUT BASED UPON REAL FACTS ON THE WORKINGS AND MIND-SET OF PEOPLE IN AFGHANISTAN, AND THE USA SOLDIERS.
IT IS THE LITTLE KNOW (BY MOST OF US) AS TO WHAT IT IS REALLY LIKE IN THE PRESENT AFGHANISTAN...... THE PEOPLE AS THEY DEAL WITH THE WAR THERE THAT EFFECTS THEM.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MINDS THAT BOTHS SIDES HAVE TO DEAL WITH IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN IS FAR FROM A SIMPLE "THIS MILITARY FORCE MEETS THE OTHER MILITARY FORCE IN OPEN COMBAT" - NOT AT ALL LIKE THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS, WHERE ONE ARMY MEETS THE OTHER ARMY AND THEY DUKE IT OUT, LIKE IN THE BOXING RING, ONE MEETING THE OTHER IN OPEN COMBAT. ONE POINT TALKED ABOUT IN THE INTERVIEW WAS THAT THE USA SOLDIER WAS TRAINED IN MANY WAYS, BUT THEY ARE NOT TRAINED IN DEALING WITH THE CULTURE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL MIND OF AFGHAN PEOPLE. THE AUTHOR MENTIONED THAT 150 PLUS YOUNG MEN BETWEEN AGES 21 AND 26 HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE AFTER RETURNING FROM DUTY IN AFGHANISTAN...... THEIR MIND COULD NOT HANDLE WHAT THEY HAD TO FACE PSYCHOLOGICALLY IN THIS WAR.
THE BOOK SOUNDS SO INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE AND ALSO EDUCATIONAL, I MUST GO TO OUR LOCAL LARGE BOOK STORE AND BUY IT.
AFTER I'VE READ IT I WILL BRING YOU A REVIEW ON IT.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO JOIN ME IN READING IT, THE TITLE IS "THE WATCH."
I BELIEVE IT'S BEEN OUT FOR 6 OR 8 MONTHS.
